Ireland — Venturing from Dublin; Galway

Galway, Ireland

Today and next Monday we’ll look at the city of Galway here on the blog. And on this week’s Fun Photo Friday I’ll post some favorites of both Galway and the Burren.

Galway

Here we had only the briefest of tour guiding before being released to wander about, find lunch, and eventually head back to the tour bus. Our choice of lunch I’ll present to you on Monday, but for now I’ll just say there was no shortage of choices about.

Nor was there a lack of ...

Ireland — Venturing from Dublin; The Burren

The Burren

With two days of touring the city behind us, Dublin now became our base for venturing out into other areas. So, on Day 3 we found ourselves on a tour that would take us to the Cliffs of Moher (which I showed you last week), the Burren and the city of Galway, all of which are situated on the west coast.

The Burren — Limestone “pavement”

Today I’ll concentrate on the Burren, which is in the Burren National Park. The Burren itself is an interesting piece of geology. “Burren”...

Talkeetna Lodging — The Good, the Bad (and the REALLY ugly)

The view from behind Susitna River Lodging

Special bonus blog article this week. In fact, you could call it a PSA (Public Service Announcement). Ursula and I just returned this past Saturday from a trip to Seattle and Anchorage. While based in Anchorage we rented a car and drove north to Talkeetna to view Denali.

Ursula enjoying Susitna River Lodging

So, what’s so special about that, you ask? While in Talkeetna on Wednesday, 12 May 2021, we ran into the inn keeper from hell, which I sha...

Ireland — More of the Cliffs of Moher

Cliffs of Moher

Today we continue with our look at the stunningly beautiful Cliffs of Moher. For more information here is the link to the official website.

Cliffs of Moher

Between the information I gave you on Monday and the link above, there isn’t a whole lot I have to add other than if you decide to go, you’ll be sharing your experience with the 1.5 million visitors drawn to this site annually.

O’Brien’s Tower

With that in mind, let’s just go today with a little gallery of area ...

Ireland — Cliffs of Moher

Cliffs of Moher

You’ll recall that this rather long travel series began with Ursula and I flying to Dublin, which was our first stop on an adventure that would eventually take us to Amsterdam to catch cruise ship that would wind up taking us right back to Ireland before going transatlantic. We spent most of Day 1 in Dublin hitting the Hop-On/Hop-Off. Day 2 found us going back to specific Dublin sights, such as St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Trinity College Dublin. Day 3 started our journey into ...

Ireland — Dublin; Trinity College Library and the Book of Kells

The Book of Kells exhibit — Trinity College Library

There is within the walls of the Old Trinity Library a magnificent illuminated manuscript. This is the famous Book of Kells, and it contains in Latin the four gospels of the New Testament.

Book of Kells exhibit

The Book of Kells dates back to late 8th to early 9th century. It may have originated in Kells, or perhaps any of several places with the British Isles. The accepted theory is that the book at least began life in a Columban mona...

Ireland — Dublin; Trinity College Dublin

Trinity College Dublin

Within easy walking distance of our accommodations at Hotel Bloom was the historic Trinity College Dublin. Here Ursula was most interested in visiting the famous Book of Kells, which you’ll see on Wednesday. As for today, we’re going to explore the grounds of the college. Let’s start with the Campanile bell tower in heart of the college:

I had a lot of fun photographing this college, as the buildings are older than even I am:
