A Visit from Sir Klaus

[image error]A Gift from Sir Klaus

‘Twas Yuletide at last, and a crystalline night.

The morn would soon bring the rebirth of the light.

Alone on his mountain a-dressed all in green

Sir Klaus stood surveying the wintery scene.

The toys in his pack he loaded onto his sled,

While he waited on young ones to snuggle in bed.

Then down through the snow with his white wolves to guide him

He came with the presents to leave there beside them.

Into each home he crept on silent-clad feet

Leaving gifts by the hearth and taking cookies to eat.

Then away he would slip with a flick of the reins

While children awoke to toys, dolls, and games.

But ‘ware ye the child who would hinder the old,

For Sir Klaus will leave thee nothing but coal.

Talakilkonna Tail

[image error]Even a fantasy world needs holidays, and Grevared is no different. I’m working on Yuletide traditions for each of the countries. These will, of course, vary from country to country. For example, the humans of Moirena, the Xaggarene Empire, and Corleon have traditions similar to those of our modern Christmas, though I’m still working out the details of each one. The demons, on the other hand, view Yuletide as a time of mourning, for they aren’t thrilled with being trapped on the plane with all the other species. There are those, of course, who still follow traditional demon practices of sacrifice, but most of them, particularly those in the more diverse cities like Jitradena, have a meal with talakilkonna tail as the main dish.

So, being the fully immersive person that I am, I decided that some kind of traditional food was in order, and I’m in the process of experimenting with variations of cookies and cakes to see what I can come up with. But I’ve having trouble with the talakilkonna tail. I’ve been wracking my brain for several weeks now, and I think I’ve finally figured it out. For talakilkonna tail in our world, I’m thinking about going with sausage-stuffed squid. I haven’t found a store nearby that carries the uncut squid yet, but I’m on the hunt. We’ll see how it goes.

Best wishes!

The Flora and Fauna of the World of Grevared

All fantasy worlds have unique inhabitants, and Grevared is no different. Inquisitor Mylar Massengill spent most of his adult life travelling all over the lands of Grevared to catalogue the flora and fauna and share his knowledge with others. Even now, centuries later, he is considered the original and foremost authority in the land. His book, The Flora and Fauna of the World of Grevared, has been expanded over the years, though his original drawings are still included.

Inquisitor Massengill spent most of the decades from 3857-3877 AOP travelling the lands of Grevared and recording and collecting the species he found there. As the technology and magic that allowed for travel between the lands was in its infancy, Inquisitor Massengill was considered a pioneer in more ways than one. His works are now used in all educational institutions in Grevared, and they are considered the foremost authority on plant and animal classification. They have, of course, been updated by various scholars over the centuries, but the title and attribution remains the same. This edition contain the creatures created by the Experimental Labs at the University and the Academe.

Gillycharm

gillycharmGillycharm from The Flora and Fauna of the World of Grevared

Appearance: This creature is small with a fish-like appearance. Its iridescent wings are long and slender, and its body appears metallic. In color it ranges the spectrum of greens, blues, pinks, and purples, and its antennae help it detect predators.

Habitat: The gillycharm is found near any large body of water. Therefore, it is found in all areas of Grevared. Because of its propensity for congregating near schools of fish, fishermen use the gillycharm to determine where to drop their nets.

Diet: The gillycharm feels on algae and single celled organisms found in lake water.

The gillycharm is considered safe.

Asing

Appearance: The Asing is a creature that possesses the traits of several species. It has

plant-like attributes, such as roots and leaves, but it also possesses a somewhat reptilian shell and head. There are parts of its body that are covered with fur, and it is believed that the Asing bears and suckles live young. Its roots prevent mobility once it reaches maturity.

Habitat: The only known habitat is in the depths of the forests of E’ma Thalas.

Diet: The Asing eats small birds and animals as well as insects. There is some fear that it will also eat humanoid creatures, though this has not been verified.

The asing is considered highly dangerous, particularly the young, who are mobile.

New Book Look — lmnelsonscorner

I am currently in the process of reformatting the interior of my books and revamping my book covers to make them look more like a series. Not only that, I’m also about to ditch my publisher and go solo, so I wanted a fresh start with a new designer. Love the direction we are going.

Writing Update

ebook-coverThe Diary of Gwennyth Grimsbane

I think I’ve finally finished the additional scenes for The Diary of Gwennyth Grimsbane. I’m hoping to release it after the first of the year, but I’ll have to see how revision and editing goes. It takes a while.

So far, Gwennyth is still a bit whiny, and I know I want to fix that. It’s annoying having an MC you just want to slap. Vonner, on the other hand, is growing up nicely.

I haven’t decided yet if I want this one to be a multiple volume work, or if I want to keep it with just the one.

On other fronts, I haven’t done squat on a new Ethan book, and the YA one is still sitting there. I guess I need to get with it and get more done.

I did add a new page to the website, though. This one is on holiday traditions in Grevared. I’m still working on some of the them, so it’s a work in progress, but I’m hoping to have them all done by the end of the year. I’m also working on some recipes from Grevared, though there will, of course, have to be ‘real’ world equivalents since many of the plants and animals there don’t exist in our world. My biggest challenge with that right now is trying to come up with a meat from our world that I can substitute for talakilkonna tail. I’m open to suggestions on that one.

Best wishes!

Meet Electa Norris

electa-vintageElecta Norris

Name: Electa Norris

Age: 13 winters

Appearance: Electa has blonde hair and blue eyes. She’s short and little stout.

Birthplace: Atada

Family: Electa was given to her grandparents as a baby, but once she received the Shield of Evalach, they sent her Corleon for fear of reprisals from the Arcana Maximus. Electa has no idea who or where her parents are, for her grandparents never told her.

Current Home: Ymla, Corleon

Weapon: Shield of Evalach – the shield carried by Joseph of Arimathea in the Arthurian legends. It allows Electa to project a shield around herself and others.

Pantheon: Arthurian

Other Info: Electa is extremely smart when it comes to books, but she’s terribly timid when it comes to her magic, so much so that Damion and others fear that she may be more harmful than helpful as a Shadow Walker. She is loyal to her friends, though she truly trusts no one.

Favorite Foods: Electa loves Old Marshall’s fist meals above all others, but she’s also a big fan of the jelly candy she gets in Ymla. She’s cautious about eating sweets and never overdoes it, but the jellies are her true weakness. She also enjoys fried eggs and oatmeal and doesn’t like meats for breakfast.

Fears: Electa fears her own insecurities. She knows she lacks when it comes to courage, and this frightens her. She tries to step up like the others do, but she often finds herself frozen. This only feeds her fear and increases her inability to act.

Favorite Teacher: Electa enjoys history class with Mr. Bickersteth. She finds his knowledge of the history of Grevared and the various races fascinating and does all she can to learn more.

Greatest Desire: Electa wants to know who her parents are and where they went.

Meet Faylen Icebreeze

faylen-vintageFaylen Icebreeze: The Chronicles of Ethan Grimley III

Name: Faylen Icebreeze

Age: 30 winters (the equivalent of about 12 human years)

Appearance: bright blue hair; large, blue eyes, pale blue skin

Family: Faylen is a member of the Icebreeze clan of elves. These elves once lived in the Shizzuria Wasteland but emigrated to E’ma Thalas before Faylen was born. Since then the clan has resided in the forests between Giqare and Tradespire. Faylen’s mother contracted the Fomoire madness and was sentenced to death. Not understanding what was occurring, Faylen fled.

Current Home: Ymla, Corleon

Weapon: Mirror of Aphrodite – it allows Faylen to see the truth of a person or situation and allows her to track an individual

Pantheon: Greek

Other Info: Faylen is extremely quiet and shy at times, but at other times she’s bold and forceful. She will often go along with what others want rather than expressing her own desires. She loves to read and is one of the best students at the Shadow Walker school, though few people, even her close friends, know this about her. She wants to return home, for she feels out of place in the human society, but, at the same time, her anger over her mother’s death prevents her going.

Fears: Above anything else, Faylen fears contracting the Fomoire madness. Though she knows more about it now than she did years before, she still doesn’t trust that it isn’t inherited. She also fears being in the human community, though the humans of Corleon are extremely tolerant of others.

Favorite Teacher: Faylen’s favorite person at the Shadow Walker school is Miss Hitherbury, the healer. While most of the students make fun of the woman because of her ample girth, Faylen finds the woman’s knowledge of healing, both magical and non-magical, to be extensive.

Favorite Foods: Faylen prefers fruits and vegetables to other foods, though she loves Old Marshall’s chocolate cakes.

Greatest Desire: Faylen’s greatest desire is to find where she fits into the world.

Follow Faylen’s adventures in The Chronicles of Ethan Grimley III, available in print and on most eBook platforms. Learn more about her world and find links to the books at http://www.lissadobbs.com.
