Dear Mom Of Young Children: These Days Will Disappear
I am not sure exactly when it happened. But I have, for sure, become an Older Mom.
I know this because I can recognize in myself the Older Moms from my early days on the job. They were, as I am now, 40or 50-something, with children whose grown-up-sounding ages, when they mentioned them to my Young Mom self, seemed impossibly unattainable, and uncomfortably close to my own. I admired their experience, their perspective, their even-keeled detachment. But I was too busy trying to Keep It Togethe...

An Empty Nest At Christmas Isn’t As Easy As It Sounds
I have a confession to make. When my children were young, I dreaded the holidays.
This is not kind of me to say, and it doesn’t match anyone’s version of an idyllic Hallmark experience. But our family Christmas tradition involved three large celebrations in three different cities in less than 24 hours. It was a marathon of drinking, celebrating, eating, driving, and unwrapping that always left me feeling exhausted, overly stimulated, and overly stuffed.
So when my children became old enough...

Why I Want to Care Less About My Kid’s College Decision
As the deadline looms, I feel my anxiety level rise. If the heat of my pulse is any indicator, I seem to be approaching boiling point. My son has pretty much everything left to do on his college applications, and I tell him so.
“Everything?” he says, sneering. “What are you even talking about?”
Well, since he asked, I decide to remind him. Again. “You still have to write three supplementary essays, finish your Common Application essay, edit some of those questions, tweak your resume, upload...
College Fair: What This Expert Saw and Wants Parents to Know
Parents, have you ever wondered what your teenage son or daughter would do if given the opportunity to attend a college fair alone without your expert parental guidance? Would they be able to handle their business? Or, would they “chill” out and just goof off?
Last month, my wife and I took 15 teenagers (without their parents) to the 30th Annual Malcolm Bernard HBCU College Fair at the Riverbank State Park in New York City. This standing room only event which was hosted by the National Urban...

A Note to My Teens: It’s Not That I Don’t Trust You…
Look, I know you’re doing what comes naturally to you – spending hours SnapChatting your friends every night, cracking up over group texts and Face-Timing classmates to do homework. I know it feels imperative to you to have your bedroom door shut, to protect your privacy, and to be allowed to spend most of your free time at the mall or the movies or at a friend’s house.
And it’s not that I don’t trust you, to be honest. It’s that I don’t have any context fo...

The Problem With Your Kid’s “Dream School”
With a high school senior living in my house, college applications and decisions are on my mind a lot these days. While my son and his friends don’t talk about it all that much, more and more students are applying early decision to highly competitive schools, and I’ve heard the term “dream school” mentioned several times recently. Those words cause me to wince internally every time I hear them, particularly when a parent whispers, “My kid will be devastated if they don’t get in!”
While I’m e...
