Quintessential Summer Style – Weekend at the Beach

What to wear for a glorious weekend at the beach?

We are headed to my friend’s home “out east” (aka The Hamptons) for a weekend with her and her family – husband, two boys. They’re super chill and relaxed, so I’m thinking it will probably all be very casual. But they are also a gorgeous couple (inside and out), charming and fabulous – so I need to be prepared for the last minute “oh, let’s stop by so and so’s house for drinks” or “let’s go for cocktails at this great place in town”. Okay –...

These Two Words Changed How I Respond When My Kids Are Upset

In 2004 my son suffered a very traumatic burn injury. He was seven at the time. In an instant our family was propelled into an alternate universe. For the next month Bridgeport Hospital’s burn unit would become our new home base. Friends and relatives poured in to help keep us afloat. Calls and letters came not only from people we knew but from strangers as the incident was big news in our small town.

Small town life can be both a blessing and a curse in such times. While the help neighbors a...

Why I’m Friends With My Ex-Husband’s Significant Other

My three kids are headed out for week away from me. They will be spending it with their dad and his girlfriend and will be four hours away. Of course, I have all the feelings– I miss them terribly. They are making memories without me, and as I write this, there’s another woman sitting to the right of my ex-husband, where I used to sit.

There are times when it leaves me gutted, if I am being honest. I’m sad about what’s happened to my family, but I am happy about her for many reasons.

Although...

S is for “Senior Year” and Here are 8 S’s to Help You Get Ready

You may be wondering how you got here, with your kid about to start senior year. You’re not alone. It was yesterday that you saw (or in my case could not make out) a flickering black and white image on an ultrasound screen that the technician told you was the image of your child.

In the last 18 years you have gone from completely clueless to slightly less clueless, passing through every degree of cluelessness along your journey. And each time you had a momentary flash of, “I’m getting pretty...

I Invested In Beanie Baby Futures for College

Hello, my name is Deb Nies, and I have a shameful confession.

Like many of my generation, I fell for the greatest Ponzi scheme of all time….I invested in Beanie Baby futures, in the hopes they would eventually fund my kid’s college education.

There, I said it. I’m not proud.

Why investing in Beanie Baby futures for college was a bad idea

Like other Moms back in the day, I noticed how much kids liked these adorable pocket-sized, bean-stuffed animals. They were resplendent, what with all the heart-shaped tags emblazoned with the beanie’s name, birthdate,...

It Took My Daughter Almost All of Freshman Year to Find Her Way in College

This is for the parents of soon-to-be college freshmen, but others may be interested as well. I’ve thought long and hard about whether or not to post this, but I talked to my daughter and we both agreed it was important to share her experience.

In the next few weeks as your child prepares to head off to college they’re going to be told over and over again that this is going to be the most amazing time of their life. They’ll hear stories of everyone’s collegiate adventures, and of the lifelong...

The “What Ifs” that Worried Me the Most About My Son Going to College

Launching your child to college sadly means change.  As parents, we prepare for these changes the best we can but let’s be honest, we are never fully prepared for all that lies ahead. It’s just like when you have your first born—you’re prepared for what you think will  happen or change, but there are so many things unexpected things coming down the pipe that you have no idea what you’re really in for. From start to finish, parenting is a journey of blind faith.

My oldest son was blessed to gr...
