I am back from Colorado, Utah and Idaho.
I am exhausted and grateful.
At night, when I close my eyes I see people.
The people are smiling. They are holding books.
They are kids and teachers and parents and librarians and booksellers.
They are teenagers who remember the first novel that they read on their own and they have come to say thank you.
Don’t let anybody tell you that kids aren’t reading.
Don’t let them tell you that teachers aren’t reading to their students, or that parents aren’t...

Tuesday night at the Fitzgerald Theater was fabulous.
Thank you to everyone who showed up to welcome the girl and the squirrel.
And thank you to Cathy Wurzer who sat on stage with me and laughed with me and asked such good questions.
At the end of the evening, Cathy reminded me of the words of Dr. Meescham (a character from the book) who says goodbye by saying these words:
"I promise to always turn back toward you."
We are in Colorado now and after that we will be in Nevada, and then Idaho.

So, today the story of the girl and the squirrel goes out into the world.
I will be talking about the book tonight at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, Minnesota.
I am nervous, hopeful.
But mostly, I am grateful to readers everywhere.
Do words matter?
Yes.
Can stories change us?
Yes.
Holy bagumba!
Here we go.

THE SQUIRREL
His name is Ulysses.
He loves poetry, giant donuts, grape-jelly sandwiches, eggs sunny-side up, gigantic squids, quarks, sprinkles, Flora’s round head.
Basically, he loves the world.
His name is derived from the Ulysses 2000X, a multi-terrain, super-suction vacuum cleaner which almost vacuums the squirrel to death.
He is rescued from the vacuum cleaner by the surprisingly helpful cynic, Flora Belle Buckman.
And here our story—the story of a girl like me and a squirrel like me—be...

THE GIRL
When people ask me what the new book is about, I say: “It is about a girl and a squirrel.”
The girl’s name is Flora Belle Buckman.
She is a surprisingly helpful cynic.
She is a reader of comics.
She loves words.
She is a little bit strange.
One of my best friends read the book and exclaimed, “She’s you!”
“Me?” I said. “Really? That never even occurred to me.”
My friend rolled her eyes.
The next day I talked to my editor and said, “A good friend of mine just told me that Flora is me....

When I was a kid, I loved the Baba Yaga stories that appeared in Jack and Jill magazine. I was especially taken with Baba Yaga’s dwelling which was a hut balanced on top of chicken legs. The hut could run and walk.
Henry (during his recent traumas) got a good deal of fur shaved from his front legs and to my mind he now resembles Baby Yaga’s chicken-legged hut.
The fur is starting to grow back and Henry is going on short walks and he is at my feet as I type these words. He is snoring.
Yester...
