My review of Tangerine is up at IMDB

Here is my review of Sean Baker’s brilliant film, Tangerine, just posted on IMDB:

I saw Sean Baker’s new film, Tangerine, last night and am completely blown away by this film. The story centers on two trans sex workers in LA, but the main thing about this film is that it offers an honest, gritty, harsh, yet humorous look at the day-to-day realities of this particular world. Baker developed the script and the film with his two principal actresses, Mya Taylor and Kiki Rodriguez, whom he met on the street in LA. The result of their input, and Baker’s openness to learning about a world not his own, is a film that is both complex and realistic, powerful and honest. For once, all of the actors who portray trans characters are themselves trans, and the stories and portrayals of all the characters are honest and sympathetic to all — the sex workers, their customers, the taxi drivers, the families at home, even the pimp — blessedly free of glitz, pity, fetishizing, and condescension. The humor is as real as the drama — not farce or camp but the kind of gutsy humor that gets people through lives of ongoing crisis. Baker is aware of the politics and realities of trans lives, bringing this sensibility to the film without a trace of polemic. For a kicker, the low-budget film (a hit at Sundance) was filmed entirely with three iPhone 5s. One of the best films I’ve seen in a long, long time on all levels –message, acting, cinematography, heart, and soul. Don’t miss it!

My good friend Max Cameron is hosting this evening event, where I’ll be showing photos and talking about my experiences at over 30 of kink.com‘s Public Disgrace filmings.

Since 2009, I have been taking still photographs during video shoots at Kink.com – primarily at Public Disgrace shoots directed by Princess Donna Dolore. Much of what I have found there – intimacy, tenderness, attention to detail, deep emotional connections – is not what you might expect from a BDSM porn shoot. These qualities, together with equally remarkable qualities of humor, playfulness, intensity, and absurdity, make these shoots wonderful displays of human emotion ripe for picking with my camera.

Sometimes I shoot the “action” that will become the focus of the videos being produced at the shoots. But it’s the emotions, connections, and random moments that occur on the fringes of the shoots that interest me the most – unexpected revelations that occur when people forget about the cameras, conversations and sexual play between scenes, the facial expressions of people in the audience, moments of reflection or casual flirtation within the circus generated by producing intense BDSM video for a mass audience. These unaffected moments, combined with the power of deep connection between dedicated dominants and submissives, put a feast of raw humanity on display – a rare chance to capture the intimacy, vulnerability, power, and joy that lie at the heart of sexual experience.

At this informal evening event I will show a selection of favorite images that document the unique, intense, crazy, and loveable world of Kink.com and Public Disgrace, and talk about the particular culture of this world of BDSM porn production. I will also have copies of my books for sale, including my latest book, This Thing We Call Sex: A Radically Sensible Look at Sex in America.

Please come join us.
