A POEM FOR EARTH DAY

Endangerment Finding

Admit our sun is common, a Milky Way twin
to a hundred million more. Even its end

ordinary, no stellar explosion, it will snap
hydrogen to helium then cool to a dense core.

You squint skyward, still wanting the corona
of a bright god, the unconquered sun that chose us

to spin around. But there is no need for tributes
of maize and falcon wings while we burn

the oil of light left eons ago. You may ratify
the droughts and downpours, assign blame

“What took so long? The quick answer is many-tentacled: perfectionism, divorce, disillusionment, lumbering pace, reluctance, fear, parenthood, weariness, revision, and bills. What about you, how do you answer when people ask what took so long?”

Seven Poets on the Verge by Maureen McLane

“I’ve decided to write on those poets who have most impressed and moved me,” explains McLane in her piece for Velaon the work of seven emerging poets.

About Shipbreaking, McLane writes: “Swooping between the history of human flight and the upsurges of continents, between the migrations of birds and the igniting of love, Schaer toggles between the cosmic and the intimate, weaving a tapestry of gorgeous, sometimes painful, interconnectness….Though this i...

Seven Poets on the Verge by Maureen McLane

“I’ve decided to write on those poets who have most impressed and moved me,” explains McLane in her piece for Vela on the work of seven emerging poets.

About Shipbreaking, McLane writes: “Swooping between the history of human flight and the upsurges of continents, between the migrations of birds and the igniting of love, Schaer toggles between the cosmic and the intimate, weaving a tapestry of gorgeous, sometimes painful, interconnectedness … Though this is Schaer’s first book, it feels like the assured work of a mid-career poet who has fully achieved her style. And the opening out of her most recent poems suggests wide and surprising horizons ahead.”
