Riki Wilchins is an activist whose work has focused on the impact of gender norms. While she started out as a transgender leader -- founding the first national transgender advocacy group (GenderPAC) -- her analysis and work broadened over time to include discrimination and violence regardless of individuals' identity. While this perspective has been widely accepted, its breadth has provoked criticism by some in the transgender community. Wilchins' work and writing has often focused on youth, whom she not only sees as uniquely vulnerable to the gender system's pressures and harm, but whom she sees as capable of "looking with fresh eyes." Wilchins' work has been instrumental in bringing transgender rights into the mainstream LGBT movmement, a ...more

“Knowledge about bodies does not stand passively by, awaiting discovery by an objective and dispassionate Science. Beyond measurable facts, knowledge about bodies is something we create. We go looking for it, and we fashion it in ways that respond to cultural needs and aims. We create the idea of binary genders because it marks something we want to track and control about bodies' appearance and behavior. We create gender identity disorders because we want to control sex [...] We create the knowledge of sexual orientation and study it exhaustively because we want to know and control the individual's capacity to contribute to reproduction. There is no bright-line separation here between knowledge and politics. Knowledge marches to the beat of power. Specific kinds of knowledge about bodies enable us to exercise specific kinds of power over them. Such knowledge is not 'disinterested'.”
― Riki Wilchins

“If sex is not just about reproduction, it is not just about genes, XY chromosomes, and hormones either. Sex is introduced to explain skeletal structure, mental aptitude, posture, emotional disposition, aesthetic preference, body fat, sexual orientation and responsiveness, athletic ability, social dominance, shape and weight, artistic ability. It is also supposed to explain any number of so-called "instincts", including the nesting instinct, the maternal instinct, and perhaps even the Budweiser instinct.”
― Riki Anne Wilchins

“But you don’t need all that theory to get there. You just need to realize that people shouldn’t be pushed from birth into these two funny little boxes called boy and girl, or punished when they don’t fit neatly into them.”
― Riki Anne Wilchins, Queer Theory, Gender Theory: An Instant Primer
