Short Story - Love v/s Honor - Write Tribe Festival of Words

I remember when I was young I had developed a habit of reading the dictionary to improve the vocabulary and learning new words. But that stopped right after school, i really dont know why I stopped it.
Anyways I took up Corinne's Challenge of learning seven new words and using them in the post. I need to confess i knew only two out the seven! But I enjoyed the entire exercise. I'll list the words below with their meanings followed by the short story so it's easier for you. You might feel its long but believe me it isn't just about 1K words! So enjoy.

Short Story - Love v/s Honor
The drive wasn’t a very long one from New Delhi, in just under four hours they were nearing the Kalara village. The dusty roads, patches of farm land, unkempt houses made the village look no better than middling. This was the very place where Jasleen’s parents belonged to. After the recent revelations about her parent’s deplorable death she had no other choice but find out the truth. All her life Jasleen had believed her parents were taken away in a dreadful accident. Harish whom she fondly called ‘kaka’ was her only family. Harish had performed all duties of a mother and a father single handedly ever since his dear friend Rajesh had left little Jassoin his care fourteen years back. But Rajesh and his wife never came back. His worst fears had become true and he vowed not to open that chapter again. Not until his little Jasso was old enough.
“Is this the place?” she asked inquisitively.
“Yes”, his voice was cold.
Jasleen’s mother, Preet belonged to the famous Maan family of the Kalara village. Her family since ages were the Thakurs and demanded great respect across the land. No one dared to gainsay Ram Singh Maan, the head of the family and Preet’s uncle. This land was famous for their strict rules and following their age old traditions.
Harish belonged to a neighboring village and had met Rajesh in Delhi when they were quite young. The newly married Rajesh had just moved to Delhi and had taken up a room next to Harish’s in the dilapidated colony. Within a year their little daughter was born and they were a happy family. Harish never heard them speaking about their families in their ancestral village. It’s only when he had asked they had mentioned the name of this village and the ordeal they had faced in their village.
“Do you know there house?” Jasleen’s question brought him back from his deep memories about the night when Rajesh came knocking at his door looking overwrought.
“No it’s the first time I’m visiting this place” he said shifting back to recalling his last meet with Rajesh. They had heard about Preet’s ailing mother and as a last wish she had wanted to see her daughter. Quite unwillingly Rajesh had consented in the visit.
“Should we ask someone here?”
“I think we need to find someone”, he said searching for someone to ask the whereabouts of the Maan family.
“I see someone sitting below that tree, there”, Jasleen said pointing towards a tatterdemalion sitting below a big tree.
“Are you sure? He looks like a fakir, I don’t think it’s a great idea” replied Harish looking skeptical.
“You only asked me not to reveal my identity, who better than this man, I don’t think he will ask too many questions” she replied while getting down from the car and walking towards the tree. Harish quickly parked and followed suit.
“Baba do you know where the Maan family lives?” she asked gently
He looked up to her squinting his eyes in the harsh afternoon sun.
“The Maan family, do you know where their house is?” she asked again.
“Why do you ask?” asked a feeble voice.
“I am doing a documentary film on villages of India, I need to visit old traditional families that is why I ask” she replied keeping in mind the cover Harish had developed for themselves.
“You are making cinema? Will you show the truth in your cinema?” asked the dilapidated man with hopeful eyes.
“Truth? What Truth?”
“If you show the truth I’ll tell you where they live”, gesturing her to sit beside.
With her video camera in hand Jasleen and Harish settled down to record the statements of the decrepit man.
“I haven’t been like this always, I have seen better days in life. I was a farmer and had a family. I had a beautiful wife and a son. We were happy in lives. My son was good in farm and went to school. He was popular in the village because he used to sing well and was often called to sing in the village fair. I didn’t have lot of money but I sent him to the Govt. college in the nearby town along with the children of the affluent of the village. It is there where he geminatedwith the girl of the Maans’. They had grown close in spite of knowing the hideboundtradition of the society here. You know how young blood is. They don’t think about anything.”
“And… what happened?” she asked with a quivering voice.
“The Maan’s got to know from the bunch of ladies at fair, the good for nothing quidnuncs about their relation. They threatened to kill my son, I don’t know what they did to their girl”
“And he just kept quiet?”
“My son was deeply in love, he fled somewhere with the girl and I didn’t see him for a long long time. The Maans took away my land and house. They didn’t leave me with anything. They had made our lives a hell. They sent men across villages to look for their daughter, I heard they went to the big city also”
“Did your son ever come back?”
The feeble man’s eyes started welling up. With a trembling voice he continued. “They tricked him to come back. They sent out false news of the girl’s mother’s ailment. They were back in the village after two years. My eyes had strived long to see my child. But when they were back the Maans lynched them to death. They had hung their bodies from this very tree. My wife died of grief, I was left with nothing. My world ceased to exist with their demise.
These Maans are demons, they are hardlined conservatives. In the name of tradition and honor they kill people. It’s fourteen years since their death, their only mistake was they fell in love. Hope they are well wherever they are and their love is eternized.
Beta now you know about the Maans, will you show the truth in your cinema?”
With trembling hands Jasleen reached out to wipe the tears off the old man’s cheeks.
“Yes Baba I will, only if you promise me you’ll come with us.”
“Come with you? Why? Where?”
“To my house, in Delhi”
“But why? Why do you want to take an ailing man to your home?”
“Because I am your son Rajesh and daughter-in-law Preeto’s daughter, Jasleen”
The name Rajesh left the old man speechless. His trembling hands reached out to hold Jasleen’s hand. He didn’t want to stop his tears today.
As he settled down in the car with Harish and Jasleen a ray of new hope shone over his black and white life.

7 ways to survive the Heat Wave this Summer

So far the death- toll as a result of heat stroke has already risen to 2330 across India. Places in Telengana and Andhra have recorded temperatures as high as 47 – 48 degrees. That’s like insane, and it’s not even a desert!

I was researching on natural ways to protect self from this deadly heat wave and thought of compiling some essential tips that might help others.
1. Staying Hydrated throughout the day

The body produces sweat to regulate the temperature in such hot weather conditions and as a result of excessive sweat the body loses water and sodium. It’s important to keep yourself well hydrated to give back all the moisture that body needs. Taking 10 to 12 glasses of normal plain water helps to hydrate your body. Tender coconut water has been found to be very useful in restoring the lost sodium and potassium.

Liquids to avoid: Alcohol, coffee and sugary beverages. They are mostly diuretic and you will end up losing more fluids and be dehydrated.
2. Get in the Shower

The best thing of summer is you can take as many baths as you want. It’s better to take off the grime and sweat. I am currently taking 3-4 showers a day! I just can’t stand the sweat at all. Kolkata is a very humid place since it’s closer to the sea. What I am practicing is not drying myself completely after the shower. It feels nice when he water evaporates. It leaves your body cool.
Things you must avoid: Chemical laden deos and dusting powders. I personally don’t like talcum powders though they help to blot the sweat. I feel they clog your bodies pores and the skin cannot breathe. I would rather choose an antiseptic liquid rub which will help to prevent prickly heat infections also.
3. Getting your Clothing Right

Throw your silks, denims, and heavy fabrics at the farthest corner of your closet and get those natural fabrics out for the summer. Going out in this weather is almost a sin and going out in clothes where you are not letting your skin breathe is a bigger sin. Light cotton fabric allows the skin to breathe and you will sweat less. It’s time for all the florals and pastels dresses and kurtis. It’s in fact so hot here I have not even dared to touch any of my denims at all.
Clothes to avoid: Dark colored clothes, synthetic fabrics, denims, heavily embroidered clothes.
4. Scheduling your Work

I know it sounds difficult but you need to save yourself. Schedule your day in a way that you are at your workplace by 9 am. Unless it’s really required don’t even venture out from 11 am to 3pm. That is the time the sun is at his worst. Even if this means you are reaching your work place little early it is good, you will avoid the harsh heat outside.
And do not leave without applying your sunscreen lotion/ cream. So far Nutrogena Ultra Sheer Sunscreen with SPF 50 has worked the best for me. I also use Chap Stick with SPF 15 to protect my lips.

Things to carry : Umbrella, large hat, a light scarf. Use any method to avoid the harsh sun rays – yeah even if it makes you look like Bandit Queen!
5. Eat Right

It is equally important to check what you are taking in this summer. Instead of spicy oily food choose well cooked fresh meals. Red meat and eggs increases heat in body so I am keeping them in minimum. Instead vegetables and fruits like gourd, cucumber, watermelon, pineapples, peaches and apples has lot of water content and helps to keeps the body cool. If you are someone you likes lentils and pulses it’s time to be generous with adding water in the recipe. The thinner the lentil the cooler you will be. Add leafy vegetables – they have good water content too.
Food to avoid: Deep fried fast food, oily food, foods with preservatives, street food, open cut fruits sold by the road.
6. Time to go Green

Bring home some foliage for your own good. Indoor potted plants inside or around the house keep the atmosphere cool and clean. You will end up making your house look beautiful and get fresh oxygen to breathe too. Win win situation for yourself. It’s also great if you encourage your family and kids to plant a tree – it will also help in nature in the long run.
7. Encourage indoor games

Most of the schools and colleges are closed for their summer vacations at this time to avoid the heat. Kids and elderly are more vulnerable to heat strokes. Encourage your kids to play indoor games than going out in the sun for a game of football, cricket or basket ball. Activities like swimming is refreshing but swimming in pools under hot sun is equally damaging. If you have access to an indoor pool – nothing like it.
While we are taking care of ourselves and our families it’s also important to realize your pets require protection in this heat wave too. Get your fuzzy friends a trim and a wash so that their skin can breathe. You can make a water bed for birds on your windows or terraces for birds. I have made one and it’s great to see the pegions visiting and getting their drink of the day!
Stay safe and stay protected. If you have any more tips for the summer do let me know. I’ll be happy to learn and add them here with due credit to you.

Five Sentence Fiction - Looking out

Lillie McFerrin Writes - House of Five Sentence Fiction.
And how does it work - you need to write a fiction story in FIVE sentences. - short and sweet. Let's go for it.
Looking out
“What Mr. Pibbs… don’t pull me, leave me alone, can you?”
Three days in a row Ella hadn’t left her bed, she didn’t feel like doing anything, not after what Connor did to her… how could he call off their wedding just a week before the D-Day!
“Time for your food, eh?”
If not for Mr. Pibbs she would have starved herself to death in the last three days, with the single thought in her mind.
She got up and stood near her huge window… ‘what a bright fresh day’ she thought picking up Mr. Pibbs in her arms… a day to re-start perhaps, no more wasting tears for that jerk, she was now sure of it, ‘thank you my love’ she said planting a kiss on the thick fur of Mr. Pibbs.

Living in the moment

Don’t you think we miss a lot every day? In this mad rush of life we overlook the small things that make things different, isn’t it? How many of us wake up in the morning, look at the morning sun and appreciate there’s a new day? How many of you sit down quietly at your favorite corner and savour your morning cuppa? How many of you enjoy the first meal of the day and feel yes I am looking forward to this day with a smile?
If you ask me – I don’t even get the time to have a proper hearty breakfast at times and before I know anything I am out of the house, somehow dressed, with comb in hand so that I can avoid the morning traffic. All brushing hair and having breakfast happens in car when I am stuck at signals. Sometimes I also wonder why I even take morning newspaper. Only days when I can read newspaper peacefully is over the weekends. Other days I get my dose of news through apps, sites, twitter – there is no dearth of news these days.
Coming back to the moments that I miss – sometimes I wish we had a more laid back life with a little more ‘me time’. I know many of us think the same. For some time now I am travelling less and working from home. And it surely has given me a great opportunity to look at life closely. Since I don’t have to travel that much I feel more rested. And you know how you are happy when you get that much wanted rest.
There are days when I wake up early to catch the first rays of sun – for a photo op or just to take in the fresh air. There are times when I look out in the distance and catch a glimpse of a colorful little bird. There are days when I actually ask myself if I am eating healthy, and take care to add some fresh fruits and nuts to a regular multigrain breakfast.

The capitalistic society has changed our lifestyle and mindset – we almost have accepted our robot like life. Sometimes I wonder what was life meant to be? To spend 80% of your time for another person (I mean a corporate) and be away from your family? Or maintain a balance between your family and work? Yes we do that over weekends, we spend time with our families, relatives etc. But how do working mothers cope up in these situations? I don’t know. Do they have guilt – I am not giving enough time to my baby or I am not giving my 100% at work?
There’s too much to think then, isn’t it? But for now I am living in the moment. I’m trying to appreciate the little things. They may look insignificant but when you closely they bring a smile to you. May be you just need to find happiness everywhere.
What do you think? Let me know.

Break Free - You are beautiful

This fear of being judged by people is quite rampant in women. Women definitely are conscious about how they look, what they wear and there is a constant tug of war between ‘am I doing it right’, ‘am I good enough’.
I came across this startling video yesterday while browsing on the life and emotional upheaval of Taryn Brumfitt, a mother of three hailing from Adelaide. She is someone who had a perfect body but gradually became extremely insecure about how her body transformed after her pregnancies. She conducted a survey asking about 100 women – how they felt about their bodies. And the answer was shocking – almost 90 percent women answered – DISGUSTING!

Taryn Brumfitt gives out a very powerful message – EveryBODY is beautiful. When you think about it deeply you will feel how true is that. As long as you are feeling healthy inside and making the healthy choices you are good. Believe in it. Feel happy about you stretch marks rather than spend sleepless nights over how am I going to remove it. Feel happy that you have a bundle of joy with you – nothing can be more precious than holding your baby in your arms. Let the questions like – ‘will I fit in my old jeans’, ‘will I get back my old shape’, ‘will I be accepted’ take a back seat.
Lady – you are beautiful – just the way you are. Struggling to change yourself to fit in a set mould and being depressed about it is not what you are meant to be. You are meant to be happy in your life. Let us not think our life as a failure let us break the fear and come alive! Let us use our creativity and create a happy life for ourselves.
Check the video below.
Are you insecure about anything and planning to break free? DO let me know.

When life asks you to Restart

For some time now I haven’t been keeping well – thanks to a very hectic schedule, loads of travel and wading through traffic – everything has been taking a toll on health. The sedentary lifestyle that we lead, rather that I am compelled to lead resulted in back pain, low hb, low blood pressure and god knows what not. It’s easy to say that we should find time to exercise and all that gyaan but in reality it’s difficult when you leave for office at 7:30AM drive for 18 km each side and get back home at 8:30 pm. After that only two important thing on your mind is food and sleep.
That is when I realized the body was shouting to just stop and block out the stress and hit the restart button. I realized there was an urgent need to get back to basics and throw out the ‘convenient lifestyle’ – if there is anything like that. And get into a path of holistic detox. No I’m not trying to sound all spa-ish and enlightened type of thing.
I’ll share just how I rebooted my system and what changes I can see in myself.
Start your day with Food

So instead of starting your day with bread butter jam and glutten laden food, packaged food – I started taking fresh cooked food – sometimes the plain poha, roti subji, fresh fruits or egg white omelets with whole wheat bread does the trick. Starting the day with heavy breakfast is a good way to charge up your metabolism. When I was younger and at home my mother always made sure I started the day with a full tummy because she knew my lunch tantrums with tiffin boxes! Mothers are always right! Heavy breakfast helps, remember that!
Keep the Junk in the Junk Yard
Lot of people might disagree with me but really I was trying to heal and detox my body from inside. We need to identify the things that only our tongues like and stomach doesn’t. I completely had cut out caffine and soda from my system. Coffee
And yes, soda or cold drink is just not a good friend for your body – specially your teeth and bone. The earlier you realize the better. I am off soda completely for more than 6 months now and I can live without it without any trouble.
Instead I started taking in lot of water – plain water – it’s not just like that that they say water is life. Lemon water, ginger water, honey water are all good ways of hydrating your body. All that bouts of headache have vanished without medicines. (Yes the doctors gave a huge list of tests and meds for every damn thing I asked).

The next big thing I did was say bye to fast food chains selling chicken fries and burgers and pizzas and what not. I left that for two reasons – I am actually bored of the fries and tacos and burgers & I really don’t want to make my body suffer because of 1 minute of taste indulgence.
Now I order a pizza occasionally, I in fact like baking one myself – and because I know I am making it fresh I am much relieved. There’s actually no alternative for freshly cooked food. I never believed it before and survived on street food/ junk food for a long time. But now I can see the difference in myself. Better metabolism, better digestion and less stomach troubles!
Get closer to nature and natural products
When coming to my hair and skin – I stopped using all sorts of creams, essential oils and all that jazz. Yes they promise a lot of things but don’t deliver. I switched over to fresh aloe, coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil, natural yogurt and these perform way better than anything else available on market.

I still don’t get a lot of time to have a full fledged exercise routine but I started doing a lot of breathing exercise whenever I got time – while driving, in shower, while reading. Morning deep breathing has some sort of a thing that really can clean up your mind. It at least does to me.
So going back to basics and getting creative with lifestyle wasn’t too difficult a task. And I can see a lot of positive changes already in the last 7-8 months. I wonder why I had to wait till the mind and soul started signaling! It doesn't take much to create a better life for yourself.
Do you sometimes feel like doing this? Let me know.

The irresistible features of ASUS Zenfone2
Today every Tom Dick & Harry is a gadget freak, isn’t it? Even school going kids these days are highly gadget savvy with the latest smartphones and tablets. And since most of us are very much in tune with the gadgets that we like to use, we like to get into the details in the spec division every time we are researching for the latest gadget.
Now in case you are wondering about the research thing that I just mentioned let me tell you I do a lot of research before picking up any new gadget – be it a tablet, or a smart phone or even the DSLR! These days when you have such an avid choice of options you need to do your research well to get the best for yourself. I am sure you will agree with me on that. So what do you require in a smartphone? Since I use my smartphone like my best friend I have to be constantly connected with it. Now, in this day you just can’t be happy with ‘just a pretty phone’! More than what meets the eye you need to be careful about what goes inside. Some features which I just can’t compromise with my smartfone is the processor and battery life. It’s actually really really frustrating when you see your smartphone hanging and not being able to take up the challenge of multi tasking. I have experienced this earlier with an android device that I owned and that made me go nuts. Similarly you feel even more frustrating with the phones that require constant charging or which makes you carry a power bank all the time in your bag. What is the use of keeping a smartphone when it just drains out the battery after two levels of Candy Crush!
I just got to know about the latest ASUS Zenfone 2 which promises quite a lot on these two features that I just mentioned. Let’s see the top 5 reasons which can make me give a thumbs up for this beauty.
SOURCE
GOOD RAMIt is supposedly the 1stsmartphone with 4GB RAM. Isn’t that like great?? ZenFone 2 is powered by an up to 2.3GHz 64-bit Intel® Atom™ Z3580 processor which means you are going to have a great gaming experience, you can play videos better and not bother about troubles of multi tasking. In short – you don’t have to wait!
BATTERY LIFEIt boasts of the new ASUS BoostMaster Technology which promises to charge the phone at double speed. So in like 39 minutes you fill in about 60% of the battery life. I can see myself enjoying a good run in the subway! (You know what I mean right?) SO that is also a thumbs up.
CAMERAIt has a 13 MP PixelMaster camera which promises great photography in low light with a f/2.0 aperture. It guarantees a 400% brighter photo in low light or night time photo. You can definitely show off some photographic skills as if you had a DSLR!
REAL TONE FLASHThis is really a nice feature in the phone. I hate when you shine like a white ghost when you are clicked with the white light flash in a smartphone! The Real Tone flash ensures you get to look human in your groupvies!
MEMORYI like my phone with lot of space. This one has 64GB internal memory which is great for all your music and videos. I don’t like the phones that says 4GB user access memory – doesn’t make much sense.
And of course the price. It is not going to make a huge hole in my pocket. 20K is good enough budget for a premium smartphone and not that everyone wants to shell off half a Lac all the time!
So go ahead and check http://www.asus.com/Phones/ZenFone_2_ZE551ML/. I want to experience some new possibilities with this new smartphone. Someone gift it to me!

Hubby Takes the #WashBucketChallenge

Now coming back to Indian men, is house hold chores only a woman’s job because she is a women? Even in this age? Even after she goes out to work and contributes equally to the average income of the household?Men can chip in doing simple things if not too much – like dusting or even laundry! Women also need to concentrate on their jobs and even travel for work. I have been lucky enough to get a man who understands me and my work schedule. And I must say he is very co-operative and hands on with the household chores when ever required leaving aside the so called male ego from which a lot of men suffer. When you are in a nuclear family and you have to run the show and make the house look decent (at least) you need both to work towards that.
So we have divided our division of labour and perform our duties. We do swap them too once in a while.
These days who washes clothes in a bucket or by hand? Most families use washing machines. So the pain of laundry is relatively easy. All you need is a good matic detergent powder and the will to help your wife!
So when I asked Indro to take up the #WashBucketChallenge he was more than happy to take it up. We segregate used clothes in anyways so that you don’t have too many whites with colored clothes. (You never know when which t shirt might start to bleed!) So it was easy for him to dump the clothes in the machine. He used the new Ariel Matic powder and after half an hour of quick wash our clothes were clean and soft. He was also kind enough to put them out to dry. That is what I feel is chivalrous in a man when he wants to help out his lady in every way possible. You don't need to do a lot, you just need to have the will!

Now what is so wrong about sharing the load of household chores and don’t men do it regularly? You are also living in the same household, why not do some work for the house too? When you start living on your own you realize how much does it take to run a house even when you have a house help and a cook. So gentlemen come forward and #ShareTheLoad with your women. It doesn't take too much and you can enjoy your TV too! Let’s work towards breaking this gender stereotyping in our society and equally participate in running the house.

Check our Mrs. Gupta's yummy breakfast Ideas
Which is the most important meal of the day? Breakfast we all know it. But isn’t it true that we tend to skip it most of the times when we are running late for college or for work?
When I was a kid I remember my mom giving me an earful every time I suggested I’ll grab something in college and not have the breakfast at home. You know how it is friends and canteen etc! But yeah now when you are running a family yourself you know how important this meal of the day is. A good hearty breakfast not only ensures a good start of the day for your body but your mind too. It gives the right push for the metabolism for your body.
And all you guys who are sweating it out to lose weight disclaimer – don’t skip breakfast, eat good healthy breakfast you will help your body to digest fast and lose some weight! How about that!
Now I have been a fussy eater myself and often I find myself eating some poha or sandwich at the office canteen. But aren’t breakfast cereals just that friend you need in the busy mornings? Pour some milk may be add some nuts and you are ready to eat?

My First Book Published! - Blank Space Anthology

And here’s the first look of my book for you guys. It’s called Blank Space - Filled with Inspiration. It’s probably the first anthology published with 100 stories from 100 inspiring authors. A big thanks to Dinesh Kumar Radhakrishnan and Propel Steps for compiling all these wonderful stories and co-coordinating with so many authors. Edited by Preethi Venugopal & Barun Bajracharya this definitely is a great collection of inspiring short stories.
And what’s more I have my Good Reads author page too. :) So you can understand my excitement I guess. Now that I have the copies with me I am reading through the stories and feeling great about all the writers. Some are really worth applauding. I also read some good reviews by readers. It only makes me happy about it.
Blank Space – Filled with Inspiration is available on Amazon.in and Propel Steps Site . It’s available in a Paperback format as of now. It will be available on Flip kart also soon. I’ll let you know when it does.

If you guys read and like the book, please be kind to let me know in a comment below, Tweet , in my FB page or you could mail me twinklingtina-at-gmail-dot-com.
Well there’s more in store. There are more stories in the pipeline! I recently took part in a blogging contest – Game of Blogs hosted by BlogAdda . You would have read the posts from Team ByLines ( if you are a regular here). And guess what our team ByLines won with our sci-fi thriller! And as a result we are getting published by Lead Start publishing. Isn’t that great news! You can read our Game of Blog journey in our Twitter Chat with BlogAdda .
There’s more, I have been selected in another anthology too. And this time it will be a love story. So 2015 is packed with my literary work! I love it already. Wish me luck people.
Will look forward to listening from you guys. Love.
P.S. My story in Blank Space is called “Live your Dreams”.
