In Scientology, ‘making it go right’ is everything, even if it wrecks lives

[Sunny, C/Sing at the Celebrity Centre]

We lived a very different life in the Sea Org, with a completely different understanding of how things were done in the “outside” world.

The following story reminds me of the nonchalant way we dealt with matters that we should have taken much more seriously. And it makes me sad to know that I was part of an organization that had this kind of affect on people. The truly sad part is that once it was over, it was no longer on my mind, or anyone else’s. What mattered most in Scientology was “making it go right” so that we met statistics goals that L. Ron Hubbard had set for us. And yet what happened here had long-term consequences, and particularly on one couple that I still think about today. I hope that they did finally truly did sort things out, and not in the oddball and most bizarre “handlings” that Scientology provided, which did not help them at all.

So let me explain by first pointing out that Case Supervisors are the highly trained people — highly trained in Scientology’s “technology,” at least — who oversaw and directed courses of action for those public coming in for auditing (counseling) services. At the time of this story, the Hollywood Celebrity Centre had two main Case Supervisors: myself and Angie LaClaire. Sometimes one of us was busy and the other would help with that persons load of work.

A Case Supervisor sits in an Ivory Tower. A secluded room. They are never supposed to see, meet, or talk to the preclears, or those getting auditing sessions.

One day Angie was not available, and they needed something checked. It was the file for a guy named William, who was asking to go back home to Hawaii. He had completed the program steps that were assigned to him, so I approved for him to leave.

Advertisement(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Then an hour later, I had an ethics officer in my office, telling me that she had just physically restrained an eight-month pregnant woman from jumping out the 6th floor of her room on Celebrity Centre property.

Apparently the man I had let leave was in the middle of some sort of handling with this woman, and maybe he should not have left yet.

Of course I was immediately assigned a condition of Liability for this. So I was in big trouble, even though I didn’t actually do anything wrong, based on L. Ron Hubbard’s writings.

Enter Marty Rathbun. Deputy Inspector General for Ethics or some other title to go with all that uniform. I don’t exactly know why Marty was at the Celebrity Centre in the first place, but he did make occasional visits there back in the 90s. He heard about this woman trying to jump from the 6th floor and came up to my office from the President’s Office area to find out what was going on.

As it turned out, the woman was Taiwanese, and she was about to have a child out of wedlock because this man refused to marry her. She knew the life the child would have, and chose to end both of their lives instead of return to Taiwan unwed.

We knew this much when Marty came to see me the first time, and we told him what we knew. All he said to me was “What are you going to DO about it?” I explained my first steps, which was collecting all the files and information on both of these people and find out what was missed. It was assumed that Hubbard technology had not been applied correctly, because if Hubbard had been applied standardly, there would not have been a problem.

Marty was unsatisfied with my response and told me he would be back in two hours to check again. Meanwhile, Angie and our senior, Kathy, seemed to be “deer in headlights” mode, and not giving me any direction or instructions, even though this was both of their jobs, not mine.

I told another ethics person to tell William to get another plane back from Hawaii to LA immediately. William refused to return. Then I told the ethics officer to tell him he was getting a Non-Enturbulation order and he would be SP declared by the end of the day if he didn’t come back. William got on the next flight back to LA.

Meanwhile the woman, who was taken off property, was put under 24-hour watch. All she could do was wait, for days, while we determined our next steps.

Marty came back and we told him we were ordering William back from Hawaii. Again “what are you going to DO about it?” I have no idea what I’m doing at all, to tell you the truth!

I ended up staying up for three days straight poring over every single record for both of these people trying to figure out what we did wrong that made her want to kill herself. I had multiple visits each day, always the same “what are you going to DO about it?” from Marty. I wondered if he was able to ever say anything else.

After much back and forth, finally the ethics officer Paul and I had a talk and ended up resolving that Paul would talk William into marrying this woman. The idea was to downplay it by saying “it’s just a piece of paper.” In the end, William ended up marrying her on paper, he went back to Hawaii, she went back to Taiwan and had the child. Marty, in the end, told us we did good and simply walked away.

This was 30 years ago. And still I wonder what happened after all of that. With life in the closed ranks of the Sea Org, I had no idea what happened with this couple after that, because I did what I had to. I closed it out and walked away.

“Today I’m going to talk to you severely. Ordinarily I jolly you along, you know, and everybody looks… Well, I hate to be this severe, but you are on the edges of the great adventure. And this separates the sheep from the goats, man. And separates the children from the characters who can do it. And you are adventured upon a period of auditing which requires far more precision, auditor presence and TRs than any auditing we have ever had. There’s certain ways to do this right, and there’s certain ways to do it wrong. The number of ways to do it wrong far exceed the ways to do it right. Any time you have somebody in training, he can always invent some new ways to do it wrong, but it’s very, very funny that he never invents — almost never — some way to do it right. Because the odds are very bad. The truth of the matter is that the auditing which you are embarked upon is in actual fact simpler than you would believe and simpler than you will believe for some time. And the main thing you are doing with it is far too much complication. That’s all. Just the complexities you’re adding into it are defeating you. And you’re taking too much time to accomplish what you’re accomplishing.” — L. Ron Hubbard, May 2, 1963

Past is Prologue

2000: Rod Keller posted details of a secret Scientology plan to boost revenues for Battlefield Earth in a ticket refund scheme. “Scientologists are quietly being told when they go to the theater to see BE they are to buy extra tickets. They are then to return the unused tickets to a person who is designated in their area for a refund. Those who might seek the refund are to be asked if they would like to make that as a ‘donation,’ saving the refund costs. In some cases, some staff are being designated to go and buy a block of tickets, but not too many to be noticed, (say 6-8) and not even go but take them back to the org for the refund. This is to be done for several weeks. Scientologists are being told to do it as a ‘birthday present to Ron.’ Some already love the idea of making it #1. They are also being told they can give the tickets to friends to promote Hubbard, another idea they also like. ASI has set aside several million dollars for this that they will mark off in some ‘promotional’ manner. The heaviest is to be done in the first week as that is the first make/break point and then it will go into week #2. In fact, there is a whole BE-promo team that has been set up to coordinate this, to make sure the Scientologists go and that they buy the extra tickets.”

IN HER OWN WORDS: Danny Masterson accuser rips LAPD miscues in 2017 letter

[Danny Masterson in 2017]

We’ve been telling you for four years now that Danny Masterson’s accusers have overcome incredible obstacles to get heard in a court of law, and now we have for you one of the most eye-opening pieces of evidence of it.

Yesterday, with help from a Bunker reader in Los Angeles, we got access to the court file in the criminal case against Masterson, the Scientology celebrity and That ’70s Show actor who is facing 45 years to life in prison if he’s convicted of charges that he violently raped three different women in incidents between 2001 and 2003.

Among the documents in that file was a response written by Deputy DA Reinhold Mueller who was opposing a motion to delay the upcoming preliminary hearing that was filed by Masterson’s defense attorney, Tom Mesereau. (The motion was denied, and the all-important prelim is still scheduled for May 18.)

One of the reasons that Mesereau was asking for more time was that Mueller has been turning over evidence to the defense in batches, and in one disclosure last week Mesereau complained that Mueller had saddled him with more than 670 pages of materials. In his response, Mueller said this was an exaggeration, and he detailed just what he had turned over (emphasis ours)…

In reality, 272 pages pertain to LAPD forensic examination of computer hard-drives which are irrelevant for purposes of preliminary hearing; 80 pages that are completely blank; 42 pages of emails that have previously been produced to defense counsel (these are duplicates); 8 pages of a letter from JD-1 “To Whom It May Concern” regarding the status of the investigation; 2 pages of a LAPD supplemental report…

Advertisement(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

We were stunned to see that reference. Years ago we received a copy of that “To Whom It May Concern” letter from a source that was not “JD-1,” the letter’s author. (That designation is a reference to the woman who is referred to as Jane Doe #1 in both the criminal case and civil lawsuit.)

Jane Doe 1’s letter, written in March 2017, is a stunning recitation of just how badly the LAPD initially handled the Masterson investigation until the women complained and the detective handling the case was replaced. The letter also documents how much pressure Jane Doe 1 had felt from the Church of Scientology not to report her allegations.

The document is truly remarkable, and now that we have proof that Danny Masterson has received a copy of it from the district attorney’s office, we have decided it deserves to be seen by the public as well.

We’ll remind you that Jane Doe 1 initially went to the LAPD in June 2004 with her allegations of an April 2003 incident, but the Church of Scientology had members submit affidavits calling her a liar and the police department closed the case at that time. Twelve years later in the fall of 2016 it reopened the case when two additional victims came forward. (For the first time the three women had become aware that they were not alone in their allegations against the actor. All three had been Scientologists at the time of the incidents.)

We are providing images of the entire original letter, with a few redactions of names. We hope, after people see this letter, they will begin to understand what these women have had to overcome, both from the Church of Scientology and the early bumbling of the LAPD, so that today they are just a few weeks away from the opportunity to testify live in a courtroom beginning May 18.

“Gormley Castle used to be down here. I was riding over to a tourney one day and was half-armed in a rainstorm, I had half steel armor on in a rainstorm. The rest of it slung on the back of the horse. Brother with me and a groom and they had the rest of the armor. And so ‘elp me, lightning ‘it. And you know armor on wet ground makes the most marvelous conductor. Knocked me plumb silly, it did. Plumb silly. It’s happened to me several times….It makes you flinch, and so forth. I remember at that particular instance I rode right on to the castle and the grooms went out and got the bodies and my brother was still alive, but the groom was awful dead and laid the body on the bed. I stood there, you know and thought that was OK and went back over to Europe and walked in and I fell over the old mither who was busy scrubbing the floor and of course, wet, you know, volts were coming up me like that and I step in her scrub bucket and walked through her and she gets a ‘ell of a shock, you know. she says, ‘Coo, what’s that?’ you know or words to that effect. It was about 1495, something like that. And so I pick up my fist and I start to say, ‘Godderdammerung, bring me in some mead,’ you know. And I go bang, you know and my fist goes straight through the table. And I say, ‘Wait a minute, boy. Oh, no, I’m dead.’ Bright, moonlight night and there’s a dog howling outside, so I walk out in the moonlight and decide for the next 55 years I’ll have to be a ghost. Well, it was a very shocking experience. But you could get discombobulated and upset and not know what you were doing. I didn’t. I went and picked up a baby or two, but — Anyhow, the point is, is it takes a lot more than you’re even aware of confronting in order to pick up electronic masses and then keep mocking them up because, you see, they’re so dangerous because you have to keep them mocked up, you see, because they’re so dangerous, you see? It’s very logical.” — L. Ron Hubbard, May 1, 1962

Avast, Ye Mateys

“I am waiting, not altogether patiently, for the individuals aboard to realize that they are a ships company and responsible to each other for the survival of the ship and each other. Until this company insists to one another that each do his duty and that crazy outnesses are threats to survival and must caese the ship is at risk. This ships company has not right whatever to dump on me the arduos task of catching dropped balls and single-handing this vessel over the top of wild goofs in food, fuel, security, repairs and maintenance and appearance. Until I see a distinct change of attitude and increased awareness in efficiency, 1. There will be no allowances. 2. There will not be any shore liberty. 3. There will be no leave. 4. And you will see Ethics as heavy and unpredictable as the goofs that are being handed me to handle. As long as the ships company remains this irresponsible and idle and refuses to insist on smart competence amongst themselves this ship is in grave danger of catastrophe. You better wake up before you wake up dead.”— The Commodore, May 1, 1969

Overheard in the FreeZone

“The original intention of all these Scientology groups in the Freezone was to bring together Scientologists that were no longer with the Church, a place to gather and exchange communication in order to expand across all the dynamics. That’s not possible unfortunately. The Freezone has already been infiltrated by OSA agents, paid and unpaid shills and trolls, SPs, psychopaths, and God knows what other evil entities looking to do harm. Ah well. Scientology was good while it lasted.”

Past is Prologue

1999: The Irish Times reported that a former Scientologist is suing for infliction of stress and brainwashing procedures. “A 33-year-old Dublin businesswoman who is suing the Church of Scientology for damages because she claims she was ‘brainwashed’ yesterday in the High Court won her application to see her ‘counseling notes.’ The church’s claim to be entitled to ‘sacerdotal privilege’ in relation to the notes was rejected by Mr Justice Geoghegan. Ms Mary Johnston said she needed the documents to prepare for her action for damages against the church and three named persons, Mr John Keane, described as ‘mission holder’, Mr Tom Cunningham and Mr Gerard Ryan, described as church members. In her statement of claim Ms Johnston alleged that while undergoing ‘treatment’ offered by the church she suffered increasingly with a ‘disassociative stress reaction’, became intolerant and rejected family and friends. She claimed she suffered a distinct personality change, would often adopt a fixed stare and simulated smile while switching off her feelings. She became increasingly confused, and her general health
suffered. She alleged she was pressurised into subscribing for ‘a purification rundown and training routeing’.”

Danny Masterson prosecutor: ‘Scientology is inextricably connected to this case’

[Danny Masterson and Deputy DA Reinhold Mueller]

Danny Masterson’s criminal defense attorneys Tom Mesereau and Sharon Appelbaum were back in court yesterday for a hearing that wasn’t listed on the publicly available docket. We learned about it through the court’s media relations department, who told us that Masterson had made yet another attempt to delay the all-important preliminary hearing and was once again denied. The prelim is still scheduled for May 18.

Over the last couple of weeks Masterson’s legal team has thrown a number of different motions at the court, asking for delays or outright dismissals and for the prosecutors to turn over more evidence or to remove redactions from the evidence that’s already been turned over.

We certainly understand why Masterson’s team has stepped up their efforts in recent days. As we explained earlier, the prelim beginning on May 18 will present live testimony from the three victims he’s accused of raping in incidents between 2001 and 2003, with only a limited opportunity for the defense to put on its own case. In a prelim the prosecutor is trying to convince the court, in this case Judge Charlaine Olmedo, that there’s enough cause to merit a trial, so the case presented is more limited than in a full-blown trial. If Masterson is convicted at trial, he’s facing 45 years to life in prison.

We’ve now obtained three of the responses that the DA’s office filed that answer Masterson’s attempts to kill or delay the case, and they provide some revelations that we knew you’d want to see.

First, let’s start off with this strong statement by Deputy DA Reinhold Mueller in response to Mesereau’s claim that Scientology is “irrelevant” to the case.

Advertisement(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Just to remind those just joining us, Danny Masterson grew up in Scientology and has been one of its pampered celebrities nearly his entire adult life, and he’s accused of raping three women who were each Scientologists at the time of the incidents, rapes that the women say they were pressured not to report to the police by the Church of Scientology.

So yes, Scientology is very much inextricably intertwined in this case, as we’ve been telling you since we first broke news of the investigation of Masterson four years ago.

The next item we found in Mueller’s responses was truly eye-opening, and by rights it should have some effect on the civil lawsuit filed by these women that has been derailed by Judge Steven Kleifield’s ruling that the women should instead submit to Scientology’s internal “religious arbitration.” In that lawsuit the three women plus two other plaintiffs are suing Masterson and the Church of Scientology not for rape but for the harassment they say they went through since coming forward to the LAPD in 2016. They’re alleging that they have been under constant surveillance, that their phones have been hacked, their cars broken into, their pets poisoned, and even a house set on fire.

Masterson and the church have called those claims baseless, and Judge Kleifield denied the plaintiffs the right to sue. The women are currently petitioning the California Supreme Court, asking it to step in and review Kleifield’s ruling.

In the criminal case, Masterson’s lawyers have asked that LAPD video surveillance of the homes of two victims be turned over.

But Mueller, in his response, calls this a “fishing expedition” by Masterson, and then drops the bombshell that the LAPD can’t turn over the surveillance footage because it’s an ongoing criminal investigation.

Our sources have in the past told us that there is a great deal of evidence of the harassment of these women, and that individual perpetrators of that harassment and surveillance have been identified. But this is the first time we’ve seen confirmation that the LAPD is treating this as a criminal probe. Will more people beyond Danny Masterson face charges for the victimization of these women?

And there’s more. We’ve now learned that Masterson’s team tried to dismiss the entire criminal rape case because a 2004 LAPD file had gone missing.

If you remember, the woman we’re referring to as Victim B, who is also known as Jane Doe #1 in both the criminal case and civil lawsuit, alleges she was raped by Masterson on April 25, 2003. Over the objections of the Church of Scientology, she went to the LAPD in June 2004. Scientology then had its members file affidavits calling Jane Doe 1 a liar, and the case was closed. When Jane Doe 1 was joined by two other women and her case was reopened in 2016, the police department discovered that her 2004 file had mysteriously vanished.

Advertisement(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Masterson wanted the case thrown out because of it, saying that the file might contain exculpatory information that could help his defense. But Mueller explained to the court that although the LAPD might have lost its file, the copy of the file it had provided the DA’s office in 2004 was still intact, and Mueller had already provided it, with redactions, to Masterson’s attorneys.

Masterson also complained about a missing audio recording of the March 10, 2017 interview of a particular witness, an actor named Jimmy Debello who is close to Masterson. We say close because if you remember a video we posted that was recorded last Thanksgiving by Masterson’s sister-in-law, Chynna Phillips Baldwin, which she has taken down from YouTube, you could actually see Debello lurking in the background as Chynna interviewed her sister, Danny’s wife Bijou Phillips, who called Danny a “Strong Island” type with women.

[Bijou, with family friend Jimmy Debello in the background]

According to Mueller’s response, Masterson argued that the criminal case against him should be thrown out because the LAPD misplaced a copy of the audio recording of its interview with Debello. But Mueller pointed at notes of the interview, which show that Debello said he had “no recollection” of the April 2003 incident.

“It’s hard to imagine what, if any, additional information Debello would have provided on the recorded interview since he purportedly has ‘no recollection’ of the incident. Not surprisingly, the defendant fails to make any credible showing in his motion of how this missing recording is material and exculpatory,” Mueller argues, and later adds that when it comes to trial, Masterson’s attorneys will be free to have both Debello and the LAPD detective that interviewed him give testimony to what was said in the 2017 interview.

We don’t know whether Debello will end up playing much of a part in this case, but this glimpse of his involvement in these court papers is fascinating, and shows how much work has gone into this investigation over four years. At one point, Mueller spells out how much evidence has been turned over.

And we wanted to make one more point about Mueller’s responses. If you remember, after a hearing last week we pointed out that Tom Mesereau has been bellyaching for months about press interest in this case, only to then try to manipulate the media by leaking a smeary court document that made numerous trashy allegations about the women accusing Masterson, and also attacking Leah Remini, claiming that she had put the women up to filing reports against him. (The women actually filed their reports with the LAPD before reaching out to Remini.)

In one of his responses, Mueller took a fairly unsubtle swipe at Mesereau’s hypocrisy.

Advertisement(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

While Mesereau may have won a few days of tabloid coverage on the attacks on Leah Remini, his motions have been repeatedly denied by Judge Olmedo. And just yesterday, as we mentioned, it happened again.

The prelim, and the testimony of three women who say they were violently raped by Danny Masterson, is still set for May 18.

“We’ve had a little slowdown here recently on research the last six, seven days — I managed to get the show back on the road again — mostly due to the nonsense going on in Australia. The general situation with regard to that is they’re not in any danger or anything like that, they’re just being cross-advised and being generally upset. The government of Australia….Well, these little boys have an opposition there that are quite red and they all of a sudden decided under a fellow of the name of Galbatty to investigate Scientology on account of how bad it all was, you see? And this is the message I want to get across to you, not the state of Australia. An organization starts slipping, they stop following through standard policies, they are not on the ball here and they individuate there and they goof up someplace else. And then you all of a sudden start having trouble in their vicinity and it finally swells up to something like this inquiry you see, and that sort of thing. Just everybody has to some degree or another taken his finger off of his number and goofed up. You get the idea? In this particular case, why, they ran some jerk down there who they knew was a security risk. He couldn’t pass an E-Meter test if you’d held a gun to his head. He is just a complete bum. So they go ahead and give him high-level processing. Name is Werne. And they give this fellow a bunch of high-level processing and restimulate two or three wrong goals on him one way or the other so he goes into a complete spin. And I think he’d been in psychiatric treatment and he went back under psychiatric treatment, and then he runs over and sees Galbatty to get Galbatty to pass legislation so as to cure his GPMs and it just all went to smoke. And it had never even occurred to anybody down in Melbourne simply to handle Werne, refund his money and straighten him up. When they did refund his money, they didn’t even require him to sign a release. So they went and refunded his money; he went over to the court the same afternoon and filed a suit for a hundred and sixty thousand pounds. I mean, it takes genius, see? It just takes goof up after goof up.” — L. Ron Hubbard, April 30, 1964

Avast, Ye Mateys

“Customs needs handling in these ports. Fully. And gently. Anyone trying to put things aboard before full clearance can really mess a port up. If you have anything to do with Customs or even think about taking anything ashore or bringing anything on the ship, see the Ships Rep first! Aboard, you are not in the country. When you go through the gate you are in the country. When you come through the gate to come aboard you are leaving the country. This is true even when the ship is lying alongside a berth. So don’t violate or stir up customs officials. They are at the gate. When you go through that gate things you are carrying or escorting are entering or leaving the country. They lock up ‘smugglers’ for 40 years on bread and water and throw the key away.” — The Commodore, April 30, 1971

Anything that persists must contain a lie in order to persist, otherwise it would unravel and vanish. LRH is a very clear and distinct knowingness ‘outside’ all. A person just like you or me. We know from the history of religion that Avatars are used as exactly that. Programmed Consciousness Constructs. This idea of Metteya originating multiple viewpoints and timelines as a complex system of vias is quite possibly just that. LRH is a real person. There is only one of him, just like you or me. The item ‘Me’ rule applies.”

Past is Prologue

1998: The Florida Times Union reported that the town of Orange Park has revoked a proclamation honoring the anniversary of Dianetics. “Mayor Monty Crook pulled the proclamation from the consent agenda Tuesday night. Later, Crook said he didn’t understand what it meant. ‘If we’re going to attach our name to it, then we ought to know more about it,’ he said. The proclamation would have established May as Dianetics Month and urged ‘all citizens to join in acknowledging the humanitarian work of our Dianetists and congratulate them on this anniversary of the pioneering techniques which frees lives from `the shadows which darken’ and builds a brighter future for ourselves, our children and generations of the future.’ Town Clerk Joyce Bryant said anyone can ask the town for a proclamation. She said she received a letter from New York asking the town to proclaim May as Dianetics Month. ‘We do it as a courtesy,’ she said, noting that she was unaware of what Dianetics was about. ‘It doesn’t mean we support it.’ Town Attorney Ed Rich said a proclamation is purely ceremonial and has no real significance.”

‘Almost Andy Reid’ says he’s unhappy that Scientology used him in propaganda video

We had kind of a wild time last night, and we thought we’d tell you all about it. Yesterday, we posted a new Scientology hip-hop video, notable, we thought, because it didn’t feature Scientology’s longtime in-house rapper, Chill EB.

But then one of our readers noticed that the Kansas City-themed song, “Hold Yo Head Up High,” not only featured a lot of KC landmarks like Union Station, Arrowhead Stadium, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, but it also looked as though Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid himself showed up for a moment, posing with rapper Tha Real Kodde One who was holding up a copy of Scientology propaganda, a booklet titled “The Way to Happiness” (see photo above).

Taken in, we posted a tweet about it, and we wondered why Coach Reid would agree to appear in a video not only about Scientology propaganda, but also produced by Scientology Media Productions (SMP), the church’s major new studios on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.

Almost right away, though, we started hearing from KC locals who said it wasn’t Reid but a lookalike. Yikes! We called up the Chiefs media team and asked them to look at the video for us. Was that Coach Reid or not?

Advertisement(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

We heard back from Chiefs corporate communications manager Luke Shanno that the man was actually a well-known lookalike who goes by the moniker “Almost Andy Reid,” and that his real name is Matt Black.

So we took down our original tweet and replaced it with one stating that the Chiefs had told us the guy in the video is Almost Andy Reid, and he’s in a video of Scientology propaganda.

Well, Almost Andy Reid was not happy about that. And we ended up having a conversation with him about it late last night.

“I’m devastated that I was tricked into something like that,” Matt told us, assuring us that he had no idea that when he posed for some photos during the football season he would end up in a video promoting Scientology.

“And there’s another guy in the video, KC Super Jesus, he is one of the kindest people. I’m sick that they fooled him too.”

[KC Superman, a/k/a KC Super Jesus, a/k/a Michael Wheeler, with a booklet]

Matt told us what he remembered about that day.

“I was out at the stadium taking pictures with people. Then someone saw me and got out of a car and stopped me. I’m pretty sure they thought I was Andy Reid. ‘Are you Andy Reid?’ they asked. And I said ‘Almost’ — that’s always my response,” he said with a laugh.

Matt says they pointed out that they had a professional video setup going, and asked if he wanted to be a part of it.

And while the video team assumed they were talking to the real Andy Reid, Matt assumed it was the Chiefs who were shooting the video.

“So I came over. And they took me right up to the artist. I didn’t even know who it was.”

We hadn’t heard of him either, but Tha Real Kodde One bills himself as the “P. Diddy of Kansas City,” which has a nice ring to it, you have to admit.

“They started chatting with me and taking pictures of me. I get people taking pictures of me all the time, so I’m used to it,” Matt says. “I could tell they thought I was Andy Reid, and I told them no, I’m not. And then I could tell they wanted nothing to do with me. They shut down production right then. I thought that was kind of weird.”

Advertisement(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Matt says he was still under the impression that the video shoot was being done by the Chiefs or for the Chiefs. It was football season, and they were in the parking lot at Arrowhead Stadium. But once he had identified himself, they suddenly wanted nothing to do with him.

“As I was leaving, some girl came up to me and asked me to sign a piece of paper.”

Ah! The release form. This is what we were curious about. In order to use Matt’s image in the video, even if they were disappointed that he wasn’t the real Andy Reid, they would need his signature on a release form before they could do so.

And did he sign it?

“If I remember correctly, because I was a little perturbed by how they treated me when they found out I wasn’t Andy Reid, I signed it ‘Almost Andy Reid’.”

Oh really?

“It was so long ago, but I think I remember doing that.”

Hey, we’re no lawyers, but if SMP has a release signed “Almost Andy Reid,” and Matt Black were to object now to his image being used, that video might be in jeopardy.

Matt said he was thinking along the same lines.

“The goal is to work on a cease and desist,” he says.

“I’m a Christian. I sing for a Presbyterian church. I have for years and years. I watched all of Leah Remini’s shows. I’m a big fan,” he says. And the last thing he wants is to be in a Scientology propaganda video.

“I use my platform to help local businesses, but I also have a lot of fun with it, on TikTok.”

He has a huge following on the social media platform, and he’s used his fame to help raise money for charities, including Ronald McDonald House.

“I don’t even charge people anything when they take pictures with me,” he says.

Advertisement(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

We had one last question for him that we just had to ask. Has he met the real Andy Reid?

“Here’s the thing. I’m a lifelong KC Chiefs fan. He’s in a Super Bowl run right now. We’ll meet some day. but no way I’m going to actively seek out a picture with Andy Reid now just because it would make me feel better.”

And there you have it, genuinely nice guy Matt ‘Almost Andy Reid’ Black, used unwittingly in a Scientology propaganda video. We think this just might heat up.

Past is Prologue

1997: “SPIEGEL and the Sueddeutsche Zeitung report this week on the escape of a 17-year-old Sea Org member from Saint Hill. Tanya (which is not her real name) was born in Zimbabwe and grew up in Rhodesia. Her mother died when she was four. Both her father and her stepmother were Scientologists. When Tanya hurt herself as child, she was not comforted, but instead asked for her overts. There seems to be a special Sec Check for six- to twelve-year-olds, with questions like: ‘What were you forbidden to tell?’, ‘Did you ever disappoint your parents?’ or ‘Have you ever done something with your body which you shouldn’t have done?’ Tanya decided to flee from Scientology half a year after she had been promoted to the HCO. Her first attempt was rather naive: she told the security officer that she would leave. Result: she was locked up and had to write down all her ‘overts’. Thereupon, she changed her tactics and told that she needed some days off to visit her dad who had suffered an alleged heart attack. The holiday is granted, and Tanya is off for a couple of days. After that, she goes back to Saint Hill to pick up some personal belongings. But Scientology has become suspicious. Only with the help of Ursula Caberta (the Hamburg commissary for Scientology) and the British police she can leave Saint Hill two days later. This was in August 1996. Tanya also reports a kidnapping attempt in Hamburg shortly after her escape. The offenders have not been found. Tanya claims to be terrorized since three weeks by telephone. Her parents have disconnected from her. Scientology has sent a dead-agent file on Tanya to the Sueddeutsche Zeitung. It contains allegations such as an angry letter from an aunt because Tanya drank 9 liters of coke, stole 20 marks and phoned for more than 400 marks from the aunts’ telephone. Interestingly, Scientology confirms that Tanya had to work hard; her working hours, according to the file, were from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.”

Two Scientologists win seats on Los Angeles neighborhood council

[Lallah and Chris Rowe]

Our thanks to the tipster who noticed that a couple of Scientologists won election this week to spots on their neighborhood council in Sunland-Tujunga, a residential part of Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley.

Lallah Rowe was already on the council as an “at-large representative,” and she successfully moved up to First Vice President by garnering 265 votes, enough to outpace two competitors. Her husband Chris Rowe, meanwhile, will join her on the council as a “stakeholder group representative” for collecting 347 votes.

Sure, this is a small regional election for a neighborhood body without any law-making power, but Scientologists have to start somewhere if they’re going to take over the planet, right?

Lallah didn’t hesitate to fall back on Scientology aphorisms in her campaign: “Communication is the universal solvent,” she said in a leaflet, and in a candidates’ forum she cited as an accomplishment helping to found the Scientology front group Artists for a Better World.

Chris, meanwhile, described handing out pamphlets in response to the pandemic during his candidates’ forum, and also mentioned associating with a “JPL engineer.” (Could it be this one? There are at least two that we know of over there.)

Advertisement(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

We dropped Lallah a message, congratulating her on her election to 1st VP and asking if she might make a statement about how her involvement in Scientology might influence how she takes on her new job.

For example, will this make her goal of getting a copy of Scientology’s “The Way to Happiness” into every home in Los Angeles more achievable?

We’ll let you know if we hear anything back.

Meanwhile, we have a perverse question for you. Has Chill EB been replaced?

Check out this hot new number out of Scientology Media Productions, from artist Tha Real Kodde One…

“This song is inspired by The Way to Happiness, A Common Sense Guide for Better Living by L. Ron Hubbard.”

Say it ain’t so, Chill!

And thanks to Phil Jones for spotting something we didn’t notice the first time through: That’s supposed to be Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid appearing briefly in the video, and with Tha Real Kodde One holding up a copy of Scientology propaganda, The Way to Happiness!

Advertisement(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

UPDATE: The Chiefs tell me this is “Almost Andy Reid,” Matt Black, a lookalike. Hey, Scientology, what were you thinking?

UPDATE TO THE UPDATE: Make sure you read our interview with ‘Almost Andy Reid’ about being tricked into appearing in the video.

Moving on, do y’all remember when Mike “Dirty Jobs” Rowe stood up for his friend Spanky Taylor back in 2015 when she showed up in Alex Gibney’s awesome HBO documentary, Going Clear?

If you do, then you might understand why we’re disappointed to see this image from an event last month…

Advertisement(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});Yes, that’s Rowe taking part in a “10X” event with major Scientology donor Grant Cardone, the professional ham hock who has done David Miscavige’s dirty work in the past.

Well, that’s a bummer.

“In the final analysis, everything is a postulate. Everything came about by postulates. We just could make postulates the end-all of everything, and we’re very safe on it. Everything rationalizes out very nicely. And postulates if treated as a topflight goal bring about a very, very fine condition on the part of the preclear. What are you trying to get him to do, in essence? Change his mind. He has a bad leg, he’s crippled; you won’t get that leg well unless he changes his mind about having to have a bad leg. Believe me, you won’t. The doctors can saw and hew and use axes and materia medica and Morris Fishbeins and everything else on him, and by George, his leg will not get well until he has made up his mind for his leg to get well.” — L. Ron Hubbard, April 28, 1954

Avast, Ye Mateys

“UK is in the mystic band. That’s the last stop this side of Hades, when an empire decides to go, Man. The basic law on this is: When dealing with unknown dangers over which he has no control and against which he has no defense, Man becomes mystic as to cause and effect. Reaching a population in that condition is quite a problem. It can be done, but only on the gradient of tiny cause and effect. By coaxing small reaches and giving very light effects it can be done.” — The Commodore, April 28, 1970

Overheard in the FreeZone

“Scientology cosmology needs no reform. The brains of some ex-Scientologists need reform and therapy. Some even believe today in Darwin and human ‘democracy.’ The Marcabian takeover of Christianity: L. Ron Hubbard described since the 1960s how extraterrestrial Marcabians and world bankers had taken over Christianity. Today Israel is populated by imposter khazares who belong to Rothschild world banker, who holds the deed (Balfour declaration) and therefore is ipso facto king of the Jews.”

Past is Prologue

1996: Deana Holmes reported receiving legal warnings from the offices of Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker concerning her “encheferated” postings of the secret NOTS levels. Encheferation transforms the text so that it sounds like the Muppets character The Swedish Chef, clearly a different “expression” under copyright law. “As your March 22, 1996 posting to alt.religion.scientology makes clear, you were already aware at the time of your solicitation of NOTS materials that Judge Whyte in the Grady Ward case enjoined such activities on trade secret grounds, as well as prohibited reproduction, distribution and other acts which infringe RTC’s rights under federal copyright law. Despite your being put on formal notice in a March 29, 1996 e-mail from RTC attorney Helena Kobrin (which you acknowledge having received by return e-mail on the same date), your response was the posting, on April 9, 1995, of NOTS Series 1, 31, 34, 35, 36, 38 and 42 in their entirety, and the subsequent reposting of those materials on April 16, 1996. These acts constitute copyright infringement and entitle RTC, _inter alia_, to injunctive relief, multiple awards of statutory damages and the recovery of its attorney’s fees should it be necessary to take court action against you. Your transliteration of the NOTs issues is no defense, nor is your characterization of your April 16 reposting as a ‘satire.’ Since you indicate in your postings that you are a law school graduate, you are fully accountable for all of the consequences of your acts. (Copyright infringement is a strict liability tort; your innocence is no defense but your willfulness can make the remedies against you much more severe.) Given that both the Ward and Henson injunctions prohibit not only the named individuals, but also those acting in concert with them, you may well have already violated one or another of these court orders. To avoid any possible misunderstanding, any further solicitations or postings like yours of March 22, April 9 or April 16 will be treated as a willful violation of RTC’s rights for which you will be held fully accountable.”
