Scientology’s bonus trophy ceremonies: The millionaire donors of 2025!

TODAY AT SUBSTACK: If you’ve signed up for free emails at Substack, you will receive today’s feature story at your inbox: Yesterday we had the first half of donors recognized at two bonus Patrons Balls held this year by Scientology leader David Miscavige. Today, it’s the really big whales who have given $1 million or more, and if you gave more than $5 million, Dave got in the photo with you! [What is this Substack thing, anyway?]

“Don’t start a pc on one thing and switch to another without finishing what you began. For example a case was started on Expanded Dianetics out of the blue, followed by three S & Ds, then a GF of some kind, then a track repair and then the S & Ds were handled. This is very bad programming. A case started on Expanded Dianetics must be programmed to complete Expanded Dianetics. This should be programmed according to Expanded Dianetics tech and not just one isolated item that needs handling. What is started on a case must be completed.” — L. Ron Hubbard, 1977

“I call to your attention something that every motorist has noted and no motorist had quite understood: that when he failed to drive his car it went to pieces. Have you ever noticed that? You park it in the garage the battery goes down, the tires go flat. Maybe it was up on blocks, maybe the battery was taken over to the service station and put on continuous charge and all of this was done. That’s some small prevention of the situation. But then three months later you put the battery back in, you take it down off the blocks and oil smoke goes out the rear end, won’t steer. That’s an oddity. The only reason it stayed there at all is because Earth is going around and it was being changed in space, at least to some degree. If it were not being changed in space at all, it would not be there; it would cease to persist. Now this is a great oddity. I don’t call upon your superstition in this regard, I merely call upon you to observe in its crude form something else.” — L. Ron Hubbard, June 4, 1955

Avast, Ye Mateys

“Did you see in the news where Nelson (Smersh) Rockefeller was asked NOT to visit Venezuela? One smart country. Nelson’s National Health Foundation money finances Smersh. He also runs Stockades in NY where youth who MIGHT become delinquent are sent. (They really are called stockades). His oil companies also exploit Venezuela and drain off her natural resources. He’s touring Latin America with 26 top advisors (psychiatrists) at Nixon’s request to ‘find out what they want”. He stopped a whole 8 hours in one country. He has now found they don’t want Rockefeller. We have a personal note to one Central American Country’s No. 2 man. The area is too hot politically just now. We avoid such areas as political heat brings in the KGB of Russia, CIA of US and the British Intelligence and they file false reports with each other. Makes anyone in the area subject to hammering.” — The Commodore, June 4, 1969

“I have the impression that the Church of Scientology auditing skills are way inferior to the Freezone ones. Church of Scientology Scientologists act like weird brainwashed zombies in my opinion. I’ve noticed that a lot of Church of Scientology zombies are theetie wheeties.”

Past is Prologue

1997: Germany this week announced it would begin monitoring Scientology nation-wide, under laws designed to control terrorist and extremist groups. From Reuters: “The federal Interior Ministry and Germany’s 16 regional states said a working group on the matter had recommended that sufficient suspicion existed of anti-democratic intent for them to legally place Scientology under surveillance. Interior Minister Manfred Kanther said Germany would do all in its power during a year-long observation to assess whether the group, which Germany does not recognise as a religion, could be classified as anti-constitutional. About 20 Scientologists protested outside Chancellor Helmut Kohl’s chancellery, where Kohl was meeting British Prime Minister Tony Blair, with placards reading: ‘Mr. Kohl. Stop the hate and violence against Scientology.’ ‘We wanted to send a message to Blair to ensure that he protects religious freedom in Europe,’ the spokeswoman said. Kanther denied that surveillance, already being carried out in the two large southern states of Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg, represented persecution of the group. ‘In Germany, there need be no fear of a witchhunt involving state bodies,’ he said. Even if the surveillance did unearth evidence against the group, Germany could not ban it outright, he added. Women and Family Affairs Minister Claudia Nolte backed the scrutiny, saying in a statement that ‘our citizens must be protected against the unscrupulous profiteering of Scientology.’ The main opposition Social Democrats (SPD) also welcomed the decision as long overdue but the smaller Green Party criticised it, calling the planned watch authoritarian. ‘Using such heavy artillery risks producing martyrs and…making the organisation more radical,’ they added.”

Random Howdy

“They do what’s called in Scientology ‘off-loading’ which is when some elderly staff member can no longer perform on the most basic level they throw their meager belongings into a garbage bag and drive them what they consider to be a safe distance from the org and they stop and open the door and tell them to get out. And I’m not joking.”

“An obsessive gambler is a psychotic just like a drug addict or an alcoholic. They are handled the way you handle any other psychotic. They don’t have to do anything for real in life because it all depends on chance and never on themselves. So you have them on the minus effect scale. Life isn’t real to a psychotic gambler and therefore they never really buckle down to anything. Consequences are unreal to them and criminal acts are incomprehensible as nothing is real anyway. Getting off overts is nothing to such people because they are not there and take no responsibility for them. Everything else is responsible—not them. Thus you have to find the trail to the R/Ses on the subject and discharge those.” — L. Ron Hubbard, 1977

“One of the things which I am very pleased to announce immediately is that we have seldom failed in recent months to raise the intelligence quotient of any individual undergoing 25 hours of processing, at least 10 points. And for those who have undergone as much as 75 hours of processing, we have raised it as much as 35 points and consider it routine 25 points. This is something that has never happened before, and therefore it is an important thing that we take a look at this. According to psychology, this is an impossibility — completely impossible.” — L. Ron Hubbard, June 3, 1955

Overheard in the FreeZone

“L. Ron Hubbard is the basic engram. When I recognized that I immediately felt more alive. I could hear the wind, feel the wind flowing through my body, see the leaves moving. To carry on a mission like Scientology you need more than raw intelligence, you need a havingness for Truth, a degree of acceptance. At the end of the day, LRH is the one who set up the Church, the one who started the abuses, and everyone else agreed to follow. That’s the truth! LRH was after all, and for all his life, an Anglo-Saxon, a man imbued in the sins and the traits of his culture. Too little human. This is not a comment against Scientology, quite the contrary. Scientology is a chest full of gold, the thing you need to know. The danger of going with the misunderstood to follow LRH is the thing you need to avoid to succeed in the mission. As long as you don’t as-is, you are subjected to fail. That being said, LRH is still my second favorite person, and only two persons have impressed me that much. [Who’s the first?] Adolf Hitler.”

Past is Prologue

1996: An article was posted this week from the Bakersfield Californian concerning the case of a man convicted of felonies related to explosives and weapons. He was also linked to an attempt to bomb the cult’s buildings in Los Angeles. “The Oregon man who set off a massive explosion inside his van during a standoff with Bakersfield police in February pleaded guilty to three felonies in Superior Court on Friday. In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to drop four other felony charges against David Lee Enteman, 39, who will now face up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced June 27. An investigation by Bakersfield police revealed that Enteman was obsessed with the president of the International Church of Scientology, Karen Hollander, and intended to explode a bomb at church headquarters in Los Angeles.”

“Do you agree with standard technology? Do you intend abiding by the rules? Do you intend to give the Clearing Course material to anyone? Do you intend to run the Clearing Course materials on anyone? Have you invalidated clearing? Have you invalidated the state of Clear? Are you here as an agent for someone? Has something been nearly found out? Have you given a false attestation? Has anything been missed? What question on this list wouldn’t you like me to ask you again? Are you connected to a suppressive person? Are you connected to a suppressive group? Have you stolen anything from a Scientology org? Are you out to get even with Scientology? Have you ever broken into a Scientology org?” — L. Ron Hubbard, 1977

“Every time you throw a book in the mails, you see, why there was so much effort coming back toward one, and it’s neglected. Similarly, let’s say, the colored gentleman who has a good, high-paid job: sticking his head through a canvas and letting people throw baseballs at him. I think that’s a well-honored profession of one time or another in carnivals and so on. All right. So here he has these baseballs coming in at him all the time. The visible picture, you see, is made of everything, but his attention goes on the incoming baseball. Yeah, but as this baseball is coming in, actually there is a contrary reaction that he pays no attention to, because he’s interested in the baseball. He’s not interested in that contrary reaction. He wishes there were more of it, if anything, you see, to slow that baseball down. And the next thing you know, he will have too many baseballs thrown at him. Now, he’s actually the — it isn’t the injuries of the baseballs or anything; it’s just the fact that he’s built up a ridge in front of his face that consists of not the incoming baseball, but the resistance going back against the baseball. You got the idea? Well, it’s the resistance back against that baseball that sticks there, not the baseballs. So he has too many baseballs thrown at him and all of a sudden gets a horrible feeling of pushing out that way.” — L. Ron Hubbard, June 2, 1961

“Hey, how about completing TRs. One on the course is trying for a world’s record on TR 0. How about reading the HCOB and doing it? There is only one way off the course and that’s through it. 80 percent of one Class Xs pcs are on this course. For sure we want no Execs out there who can’t pass Zero. So….” — The Commodore, June 2, 1971

Overheard in the FreeZone

“Most Scientologists have been indoctrinated until the cows come home about how DANGEROUS communication is for those who haven’t had auditing. One can kill a preclear with too much communication without a LONG gradient. Most Scientologists are keyouts only, they know the next level of terror, horror, sorrow and monstrosity is hiding right there around the corner. Anyhow, the safe solution is silence, then no one can point the finger at them for ‘ruining a preclears case.’ Most Scientologists I knew were terrified of communicating about anything regardless of their ‘height’ on the bridge. And remember a Grade 0 still doesn’t even know about entities or demonic infestation. So how grade 0 is that? ‘What, you are an entity? How dare you post to my Facebook page, you might freak out my friends and me too!’”

Past is Prologue

1995: Dennis Erlich reported new acts of harassment this week. JJ Gaw, Scientology private investigator, visited his landlord, looking for dirt. Also, the company that holds the mortgage on Dennis’ house was hit for some documents, billed to the landlord. More random acts:
“Two nights ago I noticed that the automatic lights in front of my house didn’t turn on when I approached. Checking the bulbs, I found them to have been screwed out 2 turns. “Three weeks ago someone came by and sanded the street # off the curb in front of the house. No other houses on the block got this treatment.”

Random Howdy

“In the cosmology of L. Ron Hubbard your children aren’t really ‘your’ children. Instead they are just non-corporeal immortal alien beings who popped into the genetic entity inhabiting the womb of the bigger thetan who proceeds to plop it out. They would have these little thetans signing billion-year contracts with their little footprints if they could.”

“A cognition is totally dependent upon the freedom to know. Overts and withholds are dedicated to another thing, these are dedicated to not knowingness. So if the person doesn’t cognite, you can immediately assume that he has a large area of not knowingness on the subject that he doesn’t even suspect. You as an outsider to his case can suspect where this fellow is having trouble. You dream up a Confessional to match it. The formula for making up a Confessional is just make up a list of all the items you can think of which have anything to do with that target.” — L. Ron Hubbard, 1977

“The guy for the last five years has been having trouble with his leg and he just sits in the auditing session with this hidden standard. He runs cows, crocs and alligators with great happiness. And at each moment after he runs the command, or every few commands, why, he kind of thetawise looks down at his leg, you see, to see whether or not that has been affected. “Well, alligators didn’t fit in that leg, so it must be something else,” you see? He’s running with his attention fixed on something else. And he broke his leg five or ten years ago and it has troubled him ever since. Well, you can assess that leg, and by the way, you can even assess it this way: His name, let us say, is John; you can assess ‘John’s leg,’ something of that sort. It’s always best to inspect the meter for a bit of reaction, but oddly enough, you don’t even have to, to do that. You just know this is a long-duration PI problem. The best way to do it is to make a list of terminals that the PC thinks it is. And then take a specific one, not take a general one. See, you don’t want this thing to be a profession. You don’t want it to be a profession, that’s all. Because he’ll run on it for quite a while if you take it as a general thing, see? ” — L. Ron Hubbard, June 1, 1961

“Mr. Sibersky will be arriving aboard in a special motorcade. Any persons who wish to welcome him aboard on arrival are invited to be on hand, observing the following: 1) Dress Neatly, 2) To avoid a mob scene — crew and students should be on the dock lined up by Org (FB, FAO, FSO) and by course (for full-time students) (FEBC, CL X). The gangway, and all accesses to gangways should be kept clear except as noted in FSO 391. 3) Be on time. When exact ETA is known this will be made known by HCO Messenger so people can assemble ahead of time.” — W/O Mike Douglas, Org Off FSO, June 1, 1971

“The being is a GodSoul, one coin, two operating mode sides. The Operating Thetan side is the God side. The preclear side is the Soul or human side. The difference between a human and an OT is only this: The OT says ‘I chose this.’ The Human says ‘I didn’t choose this.’ Above 26.0 on the tone scale the being is an OT operating in Creator mode. Below 26.0, the being is human operating in creature mode, whether he has a body or not.”

Past is Prologue

2001: Jam Showbiz News reported that the animated sequel to Battlefield Earth is in production. “Generally regarded as one of the most reviled big-budget films in recent history, the film of ‘Battlefield Earth’ was based on Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard’s novel of the same name. Despite the poor showing, Hubbard’s book has been licensed for a 13 episode animated series, to be done in the highly stylized Japanese animation format known as manga. Travolta will apparently not be providing the voice of Terl. Dan Haggerty, best known as TV’s Grizzly Adams, will fill the role, with action hero Chow Yun-Fat (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) mentioned as a voice for the non-English version of the series.”

Scientology’s new celebrity TV talk show is a warmed-over idea, says former insider

TODAY AT SUBSTACK: If you’ve signed up for free emails at Substack, you will receive today’s feature story at your inbox: Another ‘season’ debuts Monday on Scientology TV, and among the new offerings is a talk show hosted by actor Jason Dohring. Former insider and film director Mitch Brisker has some great observations about how David Miscavige’s weird TV experiment got to this point. [What is this Substack thing, anyway?]

“Withholds don’t add up to withholds. They add up to overts, they add up to secrecies, they add up to individuations, they add up to games conditions, they add up to a lot more things than O/W. Although we carelessly call them withholds, we’re asking a person to straighten out their interpersonal relationships with another terminal. Our normal Confessional is addressed to the individual versus the society or his family. It’s what people would consider reprehensible that makes a withhold. In a Catholic society, not having kept Mass would be a reprehensible action. In a non-Catholic society, nobody would think twice about it. So, most of our Confessionals are aimed at transgressions against the mores of the group. That is the basic center line of the Confessional.” — L. Ron Hubbard, 1977

“Tech — on both the 1st and 3rd dynamics — is proceeding at lightning speed. And early tech and books are coming into their own also. If everyone on Flag and on station ships know and wear their own hats well and insist on the fellow next to him wearing his, we have a potentially brilliant future. First and Third Dynamic Tech was never better, or orgs are doing well. We can greatly improve our actions and lines. If we can continue to best the enemy and get things running right we will really E-X-P-A-N-D. It took 100 years to abolish slavery. We are 20 years up on abolishing barbarism in psychiatry in a much faster moving age. If we keep at it and get better on our own jobs and get the breaks, I give us three years to have full command of the situation.” — L. Ron Hubbard, May 31, 1970

Avast, Ye Mateys

“SHIP REVENGE: I made a derogatory comment about the current abilities of Flag. Promptly the ship itself started getting even with me! A hot water line burst and flooded a corner of my cabin. My bridge cabin got varnished without being properly scraped down and wasn’t available. I got no real sleep and had a bath one finger deep and dressed in a torn up repair area. I hastily and humbly apologize to the ship, admit my overt and will mend my ways! Three bows and the sign of triangle to Apollo! I hereby warn all snipes, sailors, stewards, officers, mates and midship mites that it doesn’t pay to abuse, revile, mock or insult the ship or she will take her revenge!” — The Commodore May 31, 1970

Overheard in the FreeZone

“The body is an electro-mechanical gizmo that is permeated by an electro-spiritual entity, the thetan. A thetan can generate a voltage or electromotive force, that’s how it kicks neurons in the brain to make the brain do things. It would be interesting to note where in the neurons the extra resistance to current flow comes from. The meter is one of the few things that actually objectifies Scientology theory and approach, it grounds things in hardball physics that anyone can measure and notice the results of auditing, before and after. And I dare any one of these meatballs to explain the results away with their stupid sweat, or hand squeezes or whatever bullshit they want to delude themselves with. 20,000 hours solo on a meter across 30 years and one finally gets the idea that something is going on here that hasn’t been said. Certainly not by the skeptics or the prove-it cases.”

Past is Prologue

2000: The Evening Argus published an article on former Scientologists in Brighton, UK. “Richard Ford stepped out of the taxi and walked through the entrance of Saint Hill Manor, the Church of Scientology’s UK headquarters. Richard had been a cult member before but had been expelled. Now he had been asked to rejoin and he looked on the day as a fresh start and an opportunity to prove himself. About seven months later he walked down the same drive a broken man. During his time with the Church of Scientology, Richard lost his possessions, had become so ill he had suffered premature hair loss and was so depressed he considered suicide. Auditing is the process where Scientologists are put into a trance-like state and relive past traumas, repeatedly going over the events until they feel cheerful about them. Richard said: ‘I went out walking on air, feeling wonderful and thought I would like to learn to help other people feel like this.’ ‘They separate you from all outside influence and blast you with auditing and get a commitment from you and get you to sign a contract. I was invited into the London group and that continued for slightly less than a year. During that time my health was going down quite badly because I wasn’t eating properly because of no money. ‘I had to move address a couple of times in the middle of the night for not paying my rent. I was working and not sleeping very much. In the mid-Nineties, the British arm of the Church of Scientology was plunged into crisis due to a decline in membership and a lack of people successfully completing their courses. Richard said: ‘There was a condition of danger declared. It means if the statistics of any Scientology group are declining rapidly enough, a senior body can declare a condition of danger and can directly intervene in affairs and carry out a purge. Richard was told to spend four months away from the cult. During this time he experienced a mixture of relief and a sense of failure at his dismissal. Richard, now 37, is philosophical about his time spent with the cult: ‘When I left I had nothing, I had debts of about 2,000 pounds. I felt ‘how come an intelligent person like me fell for something so stupid?’ ‘Why did I believe all those things so contrary to common sense? I’m still coming to terms with it.’ Richard has set up a helpline called Leaving Scientology to help other people who have left or are considering leaving the cult.”

“No way is D.M. going to intentionally beach a whale. The obvious solution would be to send someone to their mansion to audit them. I’ve read they do this. First of all, it makes the whale feel special, and secondly, it prevents the whales from going to the Orgs and seeing how empty they are.”
