Can’t Wait Wednesday: Witchcraft for Wayward Girls

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released.
Witchcraft for Wayward Girls by Grady Hendrix
Horror/Thriller, Standalone
eBook, Hardcover, Audiobook, 496 Pages
January 14, 2025 by Berkley Publishing
Blurb:There’s power in a book…
They call them wayward girls. Loose girls. Girls who grew up too fast. And they’re sent to Wellwood House in St. Augustine, Florida, where unwed mothers are hidden by their families to have their babies in secret, to give them up for adoption, and most important of all, to forget any of it ever happened.
Fifteen-year-old Fern arrives at the home in the sweltering summer of 1970, pregnant, terrified and alone. Under the watchful eye of the stern Miss Wellwood, she meets a dozen other girls in the same predicament. There’s Rose, a hippie who insists she’s going to find a way to keep her baby and escape to a commune. And Zinnia, a budding musician who plans to marry her baby’s father. And Holly, a wisp of a girl, barely fourteen, mute and pregnant by no-one-knows-who.
Everything the girls eat, every moment of their waking day, and everything they’re allowed to talk about is strictly controlled by adults who claim they know what’s best for them. Then Fern meets a librarian who gives her an occult book about witchcraft, and power is in the hands of the girls for the first time in their lives. But power can destroy as easily as it creates, and it’s never given freely. There’s always a price to be paid…and it’s usually paid in blood.
In Witchcraft for Wayward Girls, the author of How to Sell a Haunted House and The Final Girl Support Group delivers another searing, completely original novel and further cements his status as a “horror master” (NPR).
Why I Want to Read This Book:First for all, I love the cover of this one and for that I will definitely grab a physical copy even if I’ll most likely listen in audiobook. I love the sound of this one and with the time it’s set in it should be a vividly written spookily good time.
Will you be checking this book out? What upcoming releases are you looking forward to?

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? – 16 December 2024 and WWW Wednesday – 18 December 2024
This week I’m linking up to It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? Hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date and WWW Wednesday hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Words!

#IMWAYR is a weekly meme started on J Kaye’s blog and now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date.

WWW Wednesday was created by MizB at A Daily Rhythm and was taken over by Sam at Taking on a World of Words. To participate answer the 3 W’s:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

I’m about 20% into this one and waiting for the story to pick up. I’m not into the whole German spy on an oceanliner plot, it reminds me of an episode of Murder, She Wrote that I hated.
Recently Finished:The Whispering Night by Susan Dennard
I loved how this trilogy ended and I can even see the author doing a spinoff in this same world!
Reckless Games by Eva Simmons
If you’re looking for a spicy holiday novella then look no further! This was one hot read!
Keyless in the Coffee Station by Bee Littlefield
This was a fun New Year’s Eve novella set before the first book in the series which I read earlier this year.
The Christmas Party by Kathryn Croft
I enjoyed this holiday thriller. It likely won’t stand out if I try to recall it a few weeks from now but it was a good set up.
Christmas Presents by Lisa Unger
While far from my favorite Lisa Unger book I did like this short holiday thriller. I was sadly wrong about the killer but I enjoyed the story all the same.
Reading Next:Claus and Effect by Piper Rayne
This is my next library borrow and I hope I enjoy it. It sounds good but I’m also afraid it’s a little too fluffy for my usual book tastes.
What are you reading and loving this week? Have you read any of these?

Seasonal Affective Disorder, Long Work Weeks, and Snow Squalls:Hey Book Blogger Friends! How was your week? I missed posting last week since I was working a 7-day stretch so I’m playing catch up this week.
It feels like ever since mid-November I’ve been struggling with seasonal affective disorder. I get it every year but it seems to hit me earlier and earlier as time goes on. I keep telling myself I just have to make it to April then I’ll be enjoying my vacation to New Orleans.
As I mentioned, I worked a 7-day work week from last Saturday through Friday. If I ever consider doing that again, please someone kick me. I thought it would be nice to have a little extra money before Christmas and didn’t take into account how exhausted I’d already be.
The last two weeks we’ve had several “snow squalls” here in Wisconsin. It’s basically a whiteout where we don’t get a lot of snow but the wind gusts really high causing blinding conditions not suitable for driving. So I’ve been enjoying my weekend off with movies and hot cocoa.

First Line Friday: 13 December

This week I’m joining First Line Friday. First Line Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Carrie @ Reading is My Superpower! So grab the book nearest you, your current read, or the book on top of your TBR stack and share the first line.
My pick this week is…
Danger on the Atlantic by Erica Ruth Neubauer
And the first line is…
The metallic groaning of the giant ocean liner pulling away from the dock at Southampton was nearly drowned out by the frenetic calls from both ship and shore.
What is the first line of the book you’re reading this week?

Time Travel Thursday: 12 December 2024

Time Travel Thursday is a weekly meme hosted by Budget Tales Book Blog where readers take a look back at what they were reading this time last year (or the year before or the year before that…) and compare it to what you are reading now. I’m also joining Susan @ Susan Loves Books and linking up to Davida @ The Chocolate Lady’s Book Review Blog for Throwback Thursday which discusses books you want to read that were published one year ago and also shares a past review so here we go…
12 December:The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
One year ago today I started reading this cozy witchy read!
Currently Reading:Danger on the Atlantic by Erica Ruth Neubauer
This week I’m reading the third book in a cozy mystery series I started earlier this year.
Comparison:Both last year’s read and this year’s have cozy vibes. One is about witches and the other is a murder mystery set on an oceanliner.
Have you read either of these books?
New Release – 1 Year Ago Today:Death in the Dark Woods by Annalise Ryan
I actually have read this one but it’s the only one I could find on Goodreads that released on December 12.
New Eyes on An Old Review:
Audiobook Review: It Waits In The Woods by Josh Malerman
A year ago I reviewed the short horror story, It Waits in the Woods by Josh Malerman. It was a 4-knife read (listen) for me.
December 4, 2024
Time Travel Thursday: 5 December

Time Travel Thursday is a weekly meme hosted by Budget Tales Book Blog where readers take a look back at what they were reading this time last year (or the year before or the year before that…) and compare it to what you are reading now. I’m also joining Susan @ Susan Loves Books and linking up to Davida @ The Chocolate Lady’s Book Review Blog for Throwback Thursday which discusses books you want to read that were published one year ago and also shares a past review so here we go…
5 December:It Waits in the Woods by Josh Mallerman
One year ago today I listened to this short horror audiobook in one sitting and loved it!
Currently Reading:Christmas in Coconut Creek by Karissa Kinword
This week I’m reading this holiday romance.
Comparison:While I’m just starting Christmas in Coconut Creek, I can tell you with absolute certainty that these two books have nothing in common. One is horror with forest monsters the other is a romance set at Christmas.
Have you read either of these books?
New Release – 1 Year Ago Today:The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhorn
This one has been sitting on my Audible wishlist since earlier this year and I hope to get to it soon!
New Eyes on An Old Review:
A year ago I reviewed 3 Hercule Poirot mysteries. I’m still devouring the series when I get the chance.
