It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? – 1 July 2024 and WWW Wednesday – 3 July 2024

This week I’m linking up to It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? Hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date and WWW Wednesday hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Words!

#IMWAYR is a weekly meme started on J Kaye’s blog and now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date.

WWW Wednesday was created by MizB at A Daily Rhythm and was taken over by Sam at Taking on a World of Words. To participate answer the 3 W’s:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Last week was a busy reading week! I breezed through a bunch of audiobooks while also struggling with a few books I ended up DNFing.

Currently Reading:The Swell by Allie Reynolds

I started this audiobook over the weekend and I’m enjoying it so far. I love that this author writes thrillers involving athletes.

Only If You’re Lucky by Stacy Willingham

I’m a little over halfway through with this one and hoping to finish it up in the next couple days so I can get to my library book. It’s really good.

Recently Finished:Inheritance by Nora Roberts

I loved this one and I can’t wait for the second book!

This was an ARC I received releasing later in the summer. And it was… pretty bad.

Reading Next:We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer

I just got this one from the library and it’s due on July 10th.

What are you reading and loving this week?

Hey Book Blogger Friends! Happy Sunday! I hope you all had a great week!

Blurb:

When Poppy Isles moves to the small town of Peshtigo, Wisconsin, and begins restoring one of the town’s most historic homes, the locals welcome her and try to unravel her past. Shy and afraid to create local ties, Poppy soon finds herself thawing toward the locals, especially the gorgeous, gruff biker, Colton “Fox” Sterling.

While Poppy settles into her new home and reluctantly makes friends, small construction mishaps and strange occurrences take a darker turn. A darkness hangs over the town pitting neighbor against neighbor as the temperatures skyrocket and Poppy’s ex-fiancé draws closer and closer, threatening to destroy the fragile peace she has found.

But Peshtigo has a dark history to rival Poppy’s own. In 1871 the town was already on the brink of ruin when the arrival of a stranger in black trailing blood, madness, and decay in his wake became the catalyst to the deadliest forest fire in US History leaving behind nothing but ash and ruin. Now as the anniversary of the deadly fire fast approaches, history is on course to repeat itself and there may be no way to stop it. With Colton and her new friends at her side, Poppy will have to decide if she’s strong enough to rise from the ashes or let the flames consume her.

Trust doesn’t come easily when you’ve been running for as long as I have, which is why moving in with a man I barely know is such a bad idea.

Blurb:

Shepard Colson is all golden-boy charm and devastating good looks. But I know what it’s like to be taken in by easy smiles and the promise of forever—I have the scars to prove it.

Only the handsome contractor won’t stop coming by the bakery and prying little truths from my lips. Those amber eyes of his seeing far too much. And when all the secrets come crashing down, he’s determined to keep me safe. Even if it means moving into my rundown cabin to do it.

Now, Shep isn’t just rebuilding the walls of my home, he’s working his way into my heart. Suddenly, he’s everywhere: shirtless in my garden or in a towel coming out of my bathroom. And my resolve is no match.

Only it’s more than his golden looks. It’s him. The way he watches for my wounds but tells me I’m stronger than anyone he’s ever known. And I can’t help but fall.

But I should’ve known better than to think I could be happy. Not when a ghost from my past still has me in his sights. And when he finds me, he’ll do anything to tear my life apart, even if it means ending it for good…

Can’t Wait Wednesday: Return to Wyldcliffe Heights

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released.

Return to Wyldcliffe Heights by Carol Goodman

Adult, Thriller, Standalone

eBook, Hardcover, Paperback, Audiobook, 320 Pages

July 30, 2024 by William Morrow

Blurb:

Jane Eyre meets  The Thirteenth Tale  in this new modern gothic mystery from two-time Mary Higgins Clark Award–winner Carol Goodman, about a reclusive writer who is desperate to rewrite the past. Losing yourself inside of a book can be dangerous. Not everyone finds their way out. Agnes Corey, a junior editor at a small independent publisher, has been hired by enigmatic author Veronica St. Clair to transcribe the sequel to her 1993 hit phenomenon,  The Secret of Wyldcliffe Heights . St. Clair has been a recluse since the publication of the Jane Eyre-esque book, which coincided with a terrible fire that blinded and scarred her. Arriving in the Hudson Valley at St. Clair’s crumbling estate, which was once a psychiatric hospital for “wayward women,” Agnes is eager to ensure St. Clair’s devoted fans will get the sequel they’ve been anticipating for the past thirty years. As St. Clair dictates, Agnes realizes there are clues in the story that reveal the true—and terrifying—events three decades ago that inspired the original novel. The line between fact and fiction becomes increasingly blurred, and Agnes discovers terrible secrets about an unresolved murder from long ago—which have startling connections to her own life. As St. Clair’s twisting tale infiltrates Agnes’s psyche, Agnes begins to question her own sanity—and safety. In order to save herself, Agnes must uncover what really happened to St. Clair, and in doing so, set free the stories of all the women traumatized and victimized by Wyldcliffe Heights.

Why I Want to Read This Book:

Carol Goodman is one of my favorite thriller/suspense authors and this one sounds right up my alley. I love reading books about writers, as I may have mentioned in past posts. I love settings like the one mentioned in the blurb and honestly, that cover is gorgeous too!

Will you be checking this book out? What upcoming releases are you looking forward to?

Last week was a busy reading week! I breezed through a bunch of audiobooks while also struggling with a few books I ended up DNFing.

Currently Reading:The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley

I only have a few minutes left of the audiobook and I was hooked on this one! I love the eerie monster legend of the village the hotel/resort is located in. And the twists were pretty good.

Only If You’re Lucky by Stacy Willingham

I’m about 30% into this one and I’m hooked. I haven’t liked the author’s previous books but I love books with toxic friendships and college settings so this one is speaking to me.

Recently Finished:The Mystery Writer by Sulari Gentill

I enjoyed this one but not as much as The Woman in the Library. If you like books about writers, conspiracy theories, and a reference to the Bloody Benders, you’ll like this one!

The Main Character by Jaclyn Goldis

I loved this one! It kept me going and the setting also gave me a sense of wanderlust!

The Resort by Sara Ochs

I DNF’d this one pretty quickly. It had all the promise of an interesting thriller from the blurb, but a cult-like island and uninteresting characters left me hanging.

The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley

I really loved this one as well! It was a great thriller with a cut-off setting.

All the Blood We Share by Camilla Bruce

This one wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great either. I thought it would be more about the murders but a great portion of the book was wasted on Kate (that was her name right?) and her fake medium thing).

One House Left by Vincent Ralph

This was an ARC I received releasing later in the summer. And it was… pretty bad.

Reading Next:Inheritance by Nora Roberts

I got this audiobook last month and I’ve been meaning to read it for a while.

What are you reading and loving this week?

Hot Days, Reading Slumps, and Rained-Out Plans

Hey Book Blogger Friends! Happy Sunday! How was your week?

Early this week we hit our first high 80s with 90+ degree heat index days. Usually I love hot days but without air conditioning it was pretty uncomfortable. Now it’s back to low humidity and lower temps.

For reading I’ve had a couple really great audiobook listens but I’m striking out on physical, eBook, and ARC reads. I feel like I’m looking for a specific type of book and I’m unable to find it except in the audiobooks I’ve been choosing.

Rain swept in midweek to drop the temps – and ruin my plans of going out exploring. I’ve had to move my plans to explore a shipwreck that is permanently washed ashore, some supposedly haunted caves, and a super unique coffee shop until this coming week. I’m still trying to get out and hike today as long as the trail isn’t too muddy.

Can’t Wait Wednesday: Look in the Mirror

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released.

Look in the Mirror by Catherine Steadman

Adult, Thriller, Standalone

eBook, Hardcover, Audiobook, 320 Pages

July 30, 2024 by Ballantine Books

Blurb:

Nina, still grieving from the loss of her father, discovers that she has inherited property in the British Virgin Islands—a vacation home she had no idea existed, until now. The house is extraordinary: state-of-the-art, all glass and marble. How did her sensible father come into enough money for this? Why did he keep it from her? And what else was he hiding?

Maria, once an ambitious medical student, is a nanny for the super-rich. The money’s better, and so are the destinations where her work takes her. Just one more gig, and she’ll be set. Finally, she’ll be secure. But when her wards never show, Maria begins to make herself at home, spending her days luxuriating by the pool and in the sauna. There’s just one rule: Don’t go in the basement. That room is off-limits. But her curiosity might just get the better of her. And soon, she’ll wish her only worry was not getting paid.

Why I Want to Read This Book:

I enjoyed the last book I read by this author, The Family Game and can’t wait to read more. I always enjoy books where the main character receives an inheritance that seems too good to be true and this one definitely sounds in that vein. I am wondering how the nanny fits in. We’ll have to see!

Will you be checking this book out? What upcoming releases are you looking forward to?
