The Murder and Tea Podcast

The Murder and Tea Podcast

My friend Lee Nelson and I are starting a podcast dedicated to the love of the mystery novel, with the first broadcast scheduled for May, 2015. The weekly half-hour broadcast will dissect one mystery novel every month. Week one will be a general review of the book with each of the four podcasters voicing his or her opinion on the whodunit.

Week two will concentrate on the hook of the book. If it has a ghost speaking through a parrot, we’ll talk about ghosts, or we will speak about visitors from another world if the tome’s protagonist is assisted by a friendly Martian.

Week three shall invite comments on the writer. We’ll share our thoughts on his/her style, other works, and method of delivering the story. The fourth and final week is dedicated to art and craft of mystery writing with comments on how well the author of the month succeeded, or not, on fulfilling the delivery of the story.

Alan Bradley’s The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie with super sleuth, the precocious, Flavia de Luce investigating and solving the dastardly deed of murder most foul has been chosen as the first victim.

The Murder and Tea Podcast will be the only podcast dedicated exclusively to the analysis of the mystery novel and there’s no riddle about that.

One of the Joys of Writing

One of the joys of writing is research. I need a joke for The RTT Killer that involves the name Nemo. Thus, I have started to read “Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.”

Research for my books and screenplays have led to to read all of Jane Austen’s books, biographies on people such as William Randolph Hearst and the actress Thelma Todd, and accumulate a hundred of “to-do’s” on my “Books on the Nightstand.”

Someday I hope my books with be on other peoples nightstand but with my luck the other Steven Tyler, you know that singer guy, will get all the credit for my tomes.

Oscar’s Tonight

I am about to head out for an Oscar party and hoping my man Mr. Keaton wins for “Birdman.” Keaton is my favorite “Batman.” The Oscar’s have lost their appeal to me over the years. There was a time that the Oscars were important to me. I would read Variety everyday and track the movie industry. That’s when I had hope of making my living writing for the movies. Those days are gone. Now it’s me and my books. The ones I read and the ones I write.

Have a happy Oscar night.

Marketing a self-published book

I checked my Lulu account today and it was exciting to see that people had bough the ebook version of One Little Lie. The marketing campaign should start revving up soon with press releases going out to five hundred markets. Sisters in Crime has a booth at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books in April and I signed up for an author signing event.

One Little Lie is getting many views on Amazon. My research of marketing a self-published book continues but today was spent doing taxes. I would rather have been writing.

Book Promotion

I’m learning the craft of book promotion. There was a Goodreads article yesterday that stated there are non-professionals who will read a book and write a review because they love to read and talk about books. Let me know if you are one of these people. I would love for you to review my book.

Misidentification

Goodreads had the other Steven Tyler as the author of my book. You know the other Steven Tyler who sings. Goodreads was quick to correct the error once I let them know of the faux pas. I actually met my brother in names once at a restaurant in L. A.. He was a nice guy.

I can’t sign but I can write a better book than he can.
