Strengthening Your Writing Voice

What would you do if you wanted to get into better shape?

Buy and read books about fitness? (Books are always my first instinct.)

Watch fitness videos or listen to podcasts?

Follow athletes on social media?

Sure, those things might help or inspire you. But the only way to build strength or improve conditioning is to actually get up and move. At least get off the couch.

The same thing is true of writing. Simply reading books — even practical, instructional books like the ones I write — isn’t enough.

The only way to improve your craft is to pick up the pen. Or the keyboard, or pencil. Do the work.

Reading is the warm-up

Beginning writers are told to read exhaustively—and that’s sound advice. Reading informs your ear and taste, teaches you about genres and markets, and more.

But, clearly reading great books is not enough. If it were, the world would be filled with inspiring writers and best-selling authors. We learn through reading, but only passively.

Passive learning is no match for the power of practice.

If we spend our days reading bloated corporate memos and sales messages, that’s what we learn and practice. If we write only quick exchanges on social media or messaging apps, that specific writing voice becomes almost automatic—and can be hard to dislodge for other projects.

Simply reading about great writing isn’t enough to transform our own. We have to do the work. And we enjoy that work more if we approach it with a sense of fun.

How do you work on your craft? Do you stretch yourself and try new approaches, or refine the way you already work? And, how do you inspire yourself to do the work of growing?

Training your writing voice

I was halfway through the first draft of a traditional book on writing voice, when I realized this:

Reading about writing voice is like watching exercise videos—helpful, but no substitute for the work.

To help people find an authentic writing voice or play with the way they show up in words, I had to entice them beyond their ingrained habits to shape new behaviors. They need to pick up a pen and practice. The magic happens on the page—we learn by doing.

So I abandoned the traditional book and instead created something that is half book, half workbook. It’s called The Writer’s Voice: Techniques for Tuning Your Tone and Style.

a laptop and cup of coffee with the book The Writer's Voice

Constructed as a 12-week, self-directed course, the book explores twelve aspects of writing voice. Of course, most people will probably jump around based on their interests. That’s fine—no one’s watching.

Beyond the usual research, it offers many writing exercises and prompts to encourage experimentation and play. It also includes tips to turn the everyday world into your writing masterclass by looking for different aspects of writing voice in everything you read.

The exercises will stretch your writing voice and comfort zones, just as a trainer might ask you to stretch or try new moves. Because it’s a workbook, you don’t have to show it to anyone. You’re writing only for yourself, to build skills and expand your craft.

My hope is that it can serve as an encouraging personal trainer, accountability partner, and general companion as you build your writing craft. And that, even if it’s messy, you find the work fun.

It’s available today on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Bookshop, and from other retailers. Check it out and let me know which exercise is your favorite!

The Perils and Pleasure of Stilted Writing

Man walking on giant pencils as stilts

Of all the Christmas Eves in my childhood, I remember most clearly the year someone brought a pair of stilts.

These stilts were things of wonder—light-colored wooden poles with red pegs for your feet. We celebrated the evening with another family, and we all took turns crashing around the house on them. Hilarity ensued.

As the youngest of the bunch, I loved the idea of being so much taller than everyone else for a moment. But walking on the things was much trickier than I’d hoped. Ballet classes hadn’t prepared me for balancing on poles.

I looked ridiculous. We all did.

Stilted writing

Something similar happens when we write with unfamiliar words or ideas. As we stumble to put one word after another, our prose lurches and wobbles.

High school teachers and college professors can spot if students are trying to bluff their way through a topic they don’t understand. Students try to hide behind elevated prose, and it shows.

When we elevate our tone beyond our own understanding, our language sounds (wait for it) stilted.

The issue stays with us beyond school. Faced with a blank page, many people put on a “writerly” hat and construct sentences they would never speak. That can work. But if they’re bluffing, either about what they know or who they are, the readers will sense it.

Of course, clowns and street performers learn to master the stilts. Likewise, famed literary writers may wield a style that towers over us mere mortals, pushing the boundaries of our understanding.

When we see this elevated writing, we should admire it. We might even try to imitate it as a learning exercise.

Having fun with stilts

In my book upcoming book on writing voice, I challenged myself to write instructions on how to tie a shoe in the most ridiculous legalese I could manage. Here’s an example:

Inasmuch as it is the obligation of a citizen to traverse common, public spaces without imperiling others or imposing undue liability on property owners, every person wearing footwear designed to be held on the foot by adjustable laces (excluding previously tied laces sewn on and held with elastic) shall fasten the two ends of the laces together in a form that keeps the shoe on the foot without creating a tripping hazard (and thus presenting questions of subsequent liability) for the wearer and those around them. The commonly accepted method of arranging these ties consists of two phases: 1) an initial half knot to set the desired degree of snugness, followed by 2) arranging the loose ends of the ties in a two-loop bow to safely secure the first knot while gathering the excess laces into the area above the wearer’s foot, using the technique described in the “Bunny Ears” rhyme (copyright unknown).

Can you see me tottering around on those verbal stilts? I was grinning as I wrote, like that kid at Christmas years ago.

The exercise also taught me something about what happens if I reach too high for the situation, and where I find stability in my writing.

How about you? Do you ever overextend your reach trying to sound like someone else? Or perhaps you should reach a little higher and see what that feels like? Experiment to find a level that is both comfortable and fun.

Want to dive deeper?

You can find exercises that challenge your writing style in my new book, The Writer’s Voice, available August 22, 2023.

August Writing Challenge

Welcome the August writing challenge. This month, we’re getting folksy.

August is a month when many people take vacations. You might escape from your ordinary life. So this month, escape from your ordinary writing voice.

One fun way to do this is to try writing with an extremely casual, informal tone—you might even say folksy! Throw in words like persnickety or highfalutin. Try writing in the latest slang, if you know what that is. Try whatever seems both fun and unfamiliar to your usual writing style.

So go ahead, go overboard. You don’t have to share this with anyone. You probably shouldn’t.

This exercise loosens up your rigid expectations for what your writing voice “should” sound like, and that can be really useful.

If you’re always casual in your writing, flip it and try to write in a very formal, highfalutin tone. See what that feels like, just for fun.

Try it a few times this month and see what happens when you push the boundaries of your ordinary writing voice and style.

A word from our sponsor…

This month’s exercise is brought to you by the book I have coming out this month called The Writer’s Voice: Techniques for Tuning Your Tone and Style.

If you found this exercise interesting, check out the book. It will be available mid-month in all of the usual places.

Three Examples to Guide Your Narrative Voice

This post is a guest contribution from Mason Engel, an independent author filmmaker who has created a fascinating documentary called Books Across America. Read more about that below.

laptop, diary with compass image on the front Lately, I’ve been hearing voices

I’m talking about author voices, real-life author voices during interviews.

I’m working on a documentary for book lovers called Books Across America. The film is about a crazy road trip when I traveled to 50 states, read 50 books, and interviewed 50 authors … all in 50 days.

So yes, I’ve heard a lot of author voices lately. I’ve read the prose of those authors, too. And you know what? Every author’s voice on the page was different than their voice in the interview. What’s up with that? A voice is a voice is a voice, isn’t it?

A previous post here defined what voice is. It discusses how writers develop it and whether they believe it’s a consciously honed skill, or an all-or-nothing instinct. A recent survey proves the diversity of authors’ views on the subject. During our nearly two months on the road, we experienced that diversity firsthand. In the interviews, of course, but, more interestingly, in the books themselves.

I’ll describe the narrative voice of three novels I read on the road, and point to examples that illustrate why these voices are compelling. By the end, you’ll be one step closer to developing—or fine-tuning—a voice of your own.

Salvage This World Michael Farris Smith

THE SETTING: the bottomlands of southern Mississippi

THE PLOT: a mother and her toddler flee from the clutches of a cult with disturbing beliefs

THE FIRST SENTENCE:

She stood bathed in twilight, the dust in her hair and a kid on her hip and she stared at the approaching storm as if trying to figure out how to wrangle the thunderheads and steer them to a distant and parched land where desperate souls would pay whatever ransom she demanded.

In analyzing voice, the first sentence is usually a good place to start, because a good first sentence will contain the first whisper of voice. Michael’s first sentence is more than a whisper.

A disciple of Faulkner, and a lifelong local of Oxford, Mississippi, Michael throws down the gauntlet right away. There are going to be some long sentences in this one, he seems to tell us, and I don’t always respect punctuation because sometimes life happens too fast and too all-at-once to split up with commas, and my characters’ thoughts don’t fit into neat little boxes anyway, and I like that word—“and”—and I’m going to make it work for me.

The second sentence?

The acres of sugar cane cut to nubs surrounding the house.

From a run-on to a fragment. From long to short. A sustained blow of wind to a moment of silence.

It’s all very stylized, isn’t it? That can be okay. It can even be good if the execution is up to par. And it can be great if the style of the voice serves the story. The voice in Salvage This World falls into the third category. Why?

The execution is professional. This is not Mr. Smith’s first rodeo, and it shows. The voice doesn’t just relay the story; it adds to the story.

First, it reflects the setting. The novel takes place in storm-torn Mississippi, with another storm on the way. The world is fragmented. Why should Michael’s sentences be any different? The winds are unpredictable, furious for a while, dead silent for a while longer. Much like Michael’s lyrical alternation between long and short sentences.

Second, the story satisfies the main prerequisite for having an extremely stylized voice: the characters are extreme. The book is about people isolated in the bayous of southern Mississippi, people who see a storm on the horizon, watch their neighbors evacuate, and then stay. It’s about a cult and a cave in a swamp that might contain the paranormal. It’s a strange book. Delightfully strange, to be sure, but strange all the same.

So Michael can get away with having a stylized voice, because he’s writing a stylized book. Could you drag and drop his voice into a suburban romance novel? Absolutely not. If your voice would work for someone else’s story, it probably wouldn’t work for yours.

Every Man a King Walter Mosley

THE SETTING: modern-day New York

THE PLOT: a black detective is tasked with proving the innocence of a white extremist

THE FIRST SENTENCE:

I drove my tiny cream-colored Bianchina up the FDR to Seventy-First, crossed the park, passing the Strawberry Fields memorial, and then made my way up West End a few blocks until turning left, finally arriving at an imposing gate in the Great Wall—the only entrance to a sprawling estate overlooking the West Side Highway and the Hudson.

What do you notice about Walter’s first sentence? Do you feel the pervasive sense of familiarity? His protagonist, Joe King Oliver, drives “up the FDR”. He crosses “the park”. He arrives at an estate overlooking “the Hudson.” He’s not on FDR Drive. He doesn’t cross Central Park. The estate doesn’t overlook the Hudson River. The character doesn’t articulate these things anymore than a fish describes the water it’s in. We know right away that Joe King Oliver is a New Yorker through and through. We know that without Joe saying a word and without Walter telling us outright. It’s all in the voice.

Now let’s consider two character descriptions. The first is of a high-class New York gangster that Joe King Oliver goes to for information:

That day the big, big man wore a three-piece maroon suit with a pale blue dress shirt and a tie that seemed to be derived from the colors of the dark rainbow that adorned a shallow oil slick.

A maroon suit? Dark rainbows and oil slicks? Walter conjures the image of a slick, high-rolling gangster that we’ve seen a million times before.

Now consider the description of a second character: an old hustler in Harlem.

[Lamont]’s face glistened with the fever of gambling … Blackjack. It was the first word of an ancient incantation that sometimes allowed a poor man or woman to dream about deliverance. Lamont grinned at those cards.

We see this character too. We can picture his face on a man throwing dice down an alley, or coming home late and telling his wife he lost this time, but he’ll win it all back next time. This is the face of a gambling man in a big city.

One more excerpt. At one point early on in the novel, Joe describes his emotional state (to himself) as “everything good and everything bad that makes me human.” This sentence contains the theme of contrast carried through the entire novel. The good and bad, white and black, rich and poor. And like the previous two passages, it relies on a particular kind of voice.

From a million books, movies, and road trips, we all have an image of New York in our heads. Joe’s familiarity with the city evokes our image of a New Yorker. His descriptions of poor gamblers and wealthy gangsters call on our New York stereotypes. And his recurring philosophical references to the highs and lows, to haves and have notes, conjures our picture of skyscrapers towering over the projects.

No one work of fiction will undo our preconceived image of a place as iconic as New York. Walter knows this and doesn’t try to undo that image; he uses it. His voice, in many ways, is the voice of New York.

This is something to remember for writers who operate in a singular setting. Setting not only defines the context of your story; it can also define the voice you use to relay your story.

The Chaperone – Laura Moriarty

THE PLOT: The young flapper-era icon, Louise Brooks, who harbors secret ambitions of fame, moves to New York with a Wichita neighbor woman as her guide. A woman, it turns out, who has secrets of her own.

THE SETTING: 1920s New York

THE FIRST SENTENCE:

The first time Cora heard the name Louise Brooks, she was parked outside the Wichita Library in a Model-T Ford, waiting for the rain to stop.

From the back cover, we know most of the novel takes place in New York, and yet we start in Wichita, Kansas. Unlike Joe King Oliver in Every Man a King, Cora—Laura Moriarty’s protagonist—is an outsider to the city. So is the young Louise Brooks, whom Cora is escorting. In different ways when they first arrive in the city, we feel both of their inexperience.

Louise had been like this since the moment they stepped into the main concourse of Grand Central Station. Even with people just behind them and just in front of them, so many speaking strange languages and wearing the dark clothes of foreigners, some smoking, some coughing, all exhaling too closely, Louise said she felt as if she were walking into her dreams. Cora had only nodded in response, her gaze moving around the concourse, taking in the arched blue ceiling and the wide exits on every side. It was a magnificent space, brighter than the station in Wichita and big enough to swallow it whole. But if she’d been there before, if the train she’d boarded with the other children had left  from that very station, she didn’t remember. Nothing felt familiar.

There are two things to note here.

First, Laura doesn’t lean on New York’s “voice” as Walter does. Why should she? Her characters are not of the city; they’re experiencing it as outsiders. New York appears not as an ever-present, all-surrounding context, but as an external source of wonder (for Louise) and potential dangers (for Cora).

Consider those differences in perspectives: the young and excited vs. the adult and cautious. These attitudes express themselves through the narrative voice.

Cora demands that her charge dress chastely, not wander too far, and refers to men not wanting women who have already been “unwrapped” like day-old candy. Much of this can be chalked up to the time period, but there lives in Cora a more specific breed of caution. This is expressed in how Cora tells the story, always with hesitance, second-guesses, and nervous excitement. The reader assumes this caution is only the productive quality of a good chaperone. It’s only later that we learn its true source. Cora moves through the city with hesitation less because of her natural conservative values, and more because of a personal fear: she’s afraid of what New York may unearth about her past.

Laura Moriarty employs a subtle trick here: her voice foreshadows a central character trait of her protagonist. It makes sense for her character from the beginning, but when we reach the end, it becomes perfect.

What’s your voice?

How do you know when you’ve found your voice?

Can you stylize your prose like Michael Farris Smith? And does that style serve your story and represent your characters?

Can you lean on the voice of your setting like Walter Mosley does with New York? Are we familiar enough with your world or the archetypes of your characters that you can speak to us in a language we immediately recognize?

Is your protagonist hiding something from us—maybe from herself—that can be foreshadowed by the narrative voice? Can you, like Laura Moriarty, hide your secrets in plain sight?

These are hard questions to answer. So when in doubt, remember this rule of thumb: If your voice works for someone else’s story, it probably doesn’t work for yours.

How Writers Think About Voice

colorful speech bubble shapes made of plasticine

How do you feel about your writing voice? Do you enjoy playing with it, or do you give it any thought at all?

As research for my next book, I’ve been asking people those questions. Unsurprisingly, the answers vary as much as the people.

Let’s start with what we mean by writing voice. Most of the definitions I found in my research focused narrowly on one domain, like literary fiction, poetic voice, or fictional character voice.

Roy Peter Clark has since given me a better definition, from the writing teacher Don Fry:

Voice is the sum of writing strategies that creates the illusion that the writer is speaking directly to the reader from the page or screen.

Let’s work with that one—it’s the illusion of a persona you create with your words.

The Voice Survey

To cast a wide net, I created a short survey on writing voice filled with these types of personal questions. Over 255 writers responded—too small a figure to be scientifically relevant, but it offered some useful insights.

The survey illustrated how voice means different things to different writers. Your feelings about writing voice may come down to your answers to these three questions.

1. What genre do you write in?

Our writing genres shape our thoughts and feelings about voice. For example:

Fiction writers care deeply about finding their characters’ voices.Business writers want their writing to reflect their speaking style, personality, or personal brand.Poets and literary authors search for a unique, identifiable poetic voice or style.Ghostwriters and parodists enjoy mimicking other voices in their work.

The survey revealed that most of us write in more than one domain: professional writing and personal, nonfiction and fiction, etc. So our ideas of voice may shift according to what we write.

2. Do you choose voice with intention, or by accident?

In the survey, some people reported that they simply write as they speak, while others make an effort to manipulate the voice. Some intentionally adjust their voice for the situation, others do so naturally.

Several people commented that until they took the survey, they never really thought about voice at all.

Do you make an effort to tune or adjust your voice, either while writing or in revision?

The survey also revealed that many of us write in multiple domains: professional writing, poetry, fiction, and more. We automatically switch “voice” as we shift from role to role.

What would happen if we were intentional about our voice?

3. What would you change?

Even if we’re satisfied with our writing, most of us recognize room for improvement. We wish we could change or enhance the impact our words have on readers.

Most survey respondents reported feeling at least moderately happy with their writing voice. Yet, when offered a list of what they might change, very few said “nothing.” People wanted their writing to be funnier, or more fluid, or riveting, or poetic.

Learning to control your writing voice is key to upgrading your writing.

How do you feel about your writing voice?

Check out the survey results and see how your responses compare with the survey group. Are you one of the relatively small group who intentionally shifts voice at will? Are you satisfied with your voice, or do you wish it could be something better?

If so, stay tuned for my upcoming book on voice.

June Writing Challenge: Nature Writing

For the July writing challenge, let’s try some nature writing.

Why nature writing? Nature in its many forms is accessible to all of us. It’s summer where I am, so there’s a desire to get outside.

And, research shows that being in nature, or even contemplating a photo of nature or looking out the window at trees, can elevate our moods and make us more creative.

So this month, commit to writing four things inspired by the natural world. Your subject might be:

The view outside your windowA favorite spot in the gardenA location you’re visiting on vacationIt doesn’t matter.

What should you write?

A descriptive essayA letter to a relativeA poemA Facebook post

Commit in advance to doing this. When we know we’re going to write about something, we tend to see it differently, perhaps in more detail or with a different viewpoint.

You might just find that this writing assignment enriches your life in an interesting way this July.

Give it a try. I’m going to try it, too, and I can hardly wait to see what kind of responses people have.

Balancing Speed and Substance

Hands typing quickly on keyboard

I tuned into one of my favorite podcasts recently—one that covers various geeky topics through in-depth interviews. Listening to these podcasts is one way to feed my curiosity, and I admire the host’s skills.

This episode, every time the host asked a question, the guest wandered around it, working their way toward an answer after many digressions.

This happened not once, but again and again. Every question led to a meandering discursion. The host tried to keep the flow of the conversation moving, but it was a struggle. As a listener, I gave up and turned it off.

Not everyone is good at speaking on-the-fly in a podcast interview. For many, this skill develops over time, with practice and a deep familiarity with the subject. I confess I still work at it.

This experience got me thinking about writing. (To be fair, I’m always thinking about writing.)

When we write for other people, we act as both podcast guest and host. Like the guest, we have a wealth of things to say and an infinity of words at our disposal. As the host, we care about the audience experience and want to follow a general structure.

Too often in the everyday world, we neglect our duties as host. We assume that whatever flies out of our fingertips into a keyboard is good enough—especially in formats that seem spontaneous or off-the-cuff.

Great writing rarely happens spontaneously.

The dangers of casual writing

If you’re writing a book or a blog post, I trust that your writing practice includes a messy first draft and careful revision. (If not, please check The Writer’s Process for advice and a writing recipe.)

But how about other writing—especially the quick notes you fire off in email or on messaging platforms?

No one composes first drafts of text messages to friends—and I don’t suggest you should start. But what about text messages to colleagues? Messages on Slack or Discord channels with teams? Quick email responses to partners or prospects?

These rapid-response channels now pervade our lives. They may look casual and off-the-cuff, with fun emojis and formatting. Much of the content that passes through is ad hoc and improvised, with jokes and lunch plans. Sometimes, though, important communications slip in amongst the chatter.

Business writing in the digital age is fraught with peril for the careless.

If your reputation is at stake, take a moment, lest you sound like that rambling podcast guest.

When to slow down

When you start typing a quick response to an email or message, yourself: does this deserve a moment of deliberation?

Which responses deserve more care? Use these questions as filters:

Could someone take offense? Are people feeling defensive or insecure about the subject?Might this response affect your professional standing? Are you firing off a response for the board, or for a valued customer? Are multiple opposing viewpoints in play? If so, consider whether you intend to take sides or build bridges.Does this email message thread have legal or compliance implications?

If any of the above are true, step back and be deliberate in your response.

Organize your thoughts elsewhere before typing in the email or app.Think about what the reader needs first, then structure the answer to those needs.Write a first pass, then read it again from the other person’s perspective. If possible, let it sit for an hour or overnight before hitting Send.

You may feel too busy to plan first, or worry about people waiting for your response.

When those worries plague you, remember that rambling podcast guest. They would have made a much better impression by taking a moment to gather their thoughts before responding. The same applies to you.

Over time, you should grow faster at sorting and deliberating. You may come up with formulas that help you frame your responses from the reader’s perspective.

It’s better to be slow with a well-considered response than fast with a careless one.

Writing for the Inner Reading Voice

Stick figure drawing of person reading, with blank speech bubble

Have you ever heard a favorite nonfiction author speak on an audiobook or podcast, only to be surprised by the way they sound?

“That’s what Mary Roach sounds like? Heh. Not what I expected.”

Why would you have any expectations for their voice?

Perhaps it’s because you hear their voice in your head as you read. When the voice you create doesn’t match the real one, it surprises you.

I hear authors…”

If you “hear” voices in your head as you read silently, you’re not alone.

According to a study by a psychology professor Ruvanee Vilhauer, then at NYU, as many as 80 percent of us might listen to voices in our head as we read. (Alas, the study appeared in the journal Psychosis. I repeat, though, it’s normal.)

Vilhauer referred to this as an “inner reading voice.” Sometimes that voice belongs to us (the reader). Or, we may assign a voice with recognizable gender, emotion, and timbre.

(If you read older works, you can whisper to your family “I hear dead people.” This only works if they have seen the movie The Sixth Sense.)

When I examine my experience, my inner reading voice is inconsistent and subtle. It appears more often if the author (or narrator) is present in the text, addressing me directly. And, I hear the writer’s actual voice if I have heard them speak or know them personally.

What does this mean for you as a writer?

Writing “voice” is not just a metaphor—sometimes it’s literal. The words you put on the page may translate into an inner voice in the reader’s head, which may or may not represent your actual speaking voice.

Even if you’re not planning to release an audiobook, you’re writing for a listening ear.

So, pay attention to the way the words sound.

Read your work aloud.

Every writing coach recommends this. It’s a great way to find typos, sure. But it also helps us understand what the reader may really hear in their head.

Words that are hard to pronounce or convoluted sentences may trip up that inner reading voice. Add too many, and you can seriously degrade the reader’s inner listening experience.

Writing with Simplicity: The Webinar

If you want to write well, start by writing simply and clearly.

Simplicity in writing is a gift for the reader. By expressing ourselves clearly and simply, we make the world better, one email, memo, report, or explanation at a time.

A Free Business Writing Webinar

My friend Erin Lebacqz and I teamed up with WordRake to make a series of business writing webinars freely available to everyone.

The Simplicity Series is now available!

Part 1 covers the “why” behind simplifying your writing—in which I describe reading as an arcade game!

Part 2 includes simple practices to incorporate in your writing process.

Did I mention that it’s entirely free?

Watch it and see what you take from it.

And if you have a team at work, share it with them. Everyone wins!

June Challenge: Freeing Your Writing

This month’s challenge uses one of my favorite writing practices; freewriting. Freewriting is how I solve problems and generate ideas — it’s like a physical portal into deep thinking.

Here’s how it works: Pick up a paper and pen, or a keyboard, and write fluidly and without judgment, until you fill a page or hit a word count. That’s it. When you get stuck, keep writing by asking yourself questions as you write.

Why does it work? Freewriting shuts down the inhibiting effect of the inner critic—giving your Muse free rein. You usually get good ideas from inside your own head, even if you don’t use the words.

Here’s my challenge for you:

Pick a topic you want to write about—for a blog series, a book, whatever. This month, try to freewrite 500 words a day, at least 5 days a week, about that topic. No outline, no order — write whatever arrives that day.

If you do this, you’ll end up with 10K words or 20 pages, which will include good ideas and fresh insights. It might be enough to get you started on a book.

See what happens—and happy writing.
