Richard Schiver

Richard was born in Frostburg, Maryland, in the winter of ’58’ and currently lives eight miles away. A five-year stint with the military allowed him to see what he wanted of the world. Married with four grown children and eight grandchildren, he and his wife provide a home to four pets that are spoiled beyond rotten.

In addition to writing daily he works a full time job in retail, and piddles around in his wood-shop making one mess after another when time permits.

The Writing Process

Normally, I don’t share stuff like this, but I’m a fan of Two Guys and Guy and after seeing the latest comic, I felt the need to share.

The horrors of the past meet the brutality of the present.

All Roads Lead to Terror
Meet the Characters

Meat was born at the height of the Zombie apocalypse, upon his birth his mother took one look at him and pronounced him meat. He grew up in a reality where they were all nothing more than walking bags of meat, so in his mind the name fit perfectly.

Window, his best friend, is very quiet, and ever watchful with a quick hand. To him friendship was the most important thing in the world. His family had perished in the ruthless times after the awakening and his temperament had been forged in the fire that took them from him. His friends were all he had left so he watched over them with a jealously protective nature strengthened by that sense of invulnerability all boys his age embraced. Further backed up by a quick hand with the .44 he’d used to kill the men who had raped his mother.

The remaining members of this quartet are Einstein who had been born within the compound at Bremo Bluff after the apocalypse. Having spent his life behind the fence he had no first hand knowledge of how brutal the world has become. As his name implies he’s the smartest in the group, as well the most innocent. While that innocence helps to soften the ruthlessness of the other three, it will serve to drive a wedge into their friendship. On this trip he will discover just how terrifying the world beyond the fence has become.

The final member is Billie-Bob, one half of a set of twins who appeared outside the fence several years earlier. Your typical class clown whose mouth runs a mile a minute, if he isn’t sharing overused jokes about Zombies, he’s whispering the passages from a book his mother used to read to him when he was younger, a chant that provides him with a degree of comfort. Billie-Bob is unique in that at the tender age of eleven he has proven himself to be a natural born sniper with a willingness to use his special talent to protect his friends.

The horrors of the past meet the brutality of the present.

Four boys strengthen the bonds of their friendship, while taking their first hesitant steps into adulthood, as they face the brutality of an old, new world. They will be tested at every step in their journey, as they travel through a blasted land where the only hope is for a swift death followed by an endless sleep. Survival lay in the firepower they carried, coupled with their willingness to use it, and their ability to trust each other with their own lives.

The world has become a wild place filled with wild things, and into this new reality each of them had been born. Coming of age at the end of days, where savagery was the norm, and man’s inhumanity to man was on daily display. Where the only law was the firepower one carried and the only hope was for a swift death followed by an endless sleep.

Lindsay Marie Miller

Lindsay recently contacted me and told me she wrote another book. This one is called Jungle Eyes.  It’s a Romantic Action/Adventure novel set on a deserted tropical island in the year 1899.

Here’s the synopsis:

 In the spring of 1899, Henry Rochester boards a ship on the docks of New York Harbor and sets sail across the Atlantic. Desperately seeking freedom and adventure, Henry fails to anticipate the violent ocean storm that will destroy the ship, murder his fellow comrades, and leave him stranded on a deserted island. However, Henry is not alone in paradise, as a beautiful young woman, named Elaine, acquaints him with the enchanting, yet evil nature of the jungle. As the two quarrel, reconcile, and bond, love blossoms between them like an exotic wildflower. But when the tide turns, bringing an unescapable wave of danger with it, Henry and Elaine must face the callous brutality of the uninvited.

Out on Vacation

I know, I know. It was a slow month. I was out on vacation for a whole week with no access to internet. However, I had plenty of access to pictures, so I decided to share some with you guys.

Also, I made a promo image for Claude’s Hotel.

It’s like a weirder version of the cover…

Claude’s Hotel Book Cover

What was that? I have spent tons of time trying to come up with a book cover for Claude’s Hotel. Mainly because I suck at design. Yet, after days and this horrid display. I designed it on my phone by myself and it is just pitiful. Seeing it makes me want to cry. 

I eventually came up with this:

 

 

 

So far I like it. I think it captures the story pretty well. I might edit it a bit, not sure. So far, I’m going to use this as the cover.

Sorry for the Blank Week

As the title says, I am sorry for the blank week. Normally, there would be an author interview, some kind of writing tip, or even some random book news.

Instead, I have been so booked with school, nanowrimo, and Claude’s Hotel. November is going to be a more sporadic month. Instead of usual posts, I’ll update you on my progress with NanoWrimo and my goal of 35,000 words.

Why 35,000?  We’ll that’s usually the length of my first or second draft. As mentioned before, I’m a skeleton writer. I write just bare bones before adding any meat. So a 35,000 word draft can become a 45,000 to 50,000 word manuscript, which is the average length of my novels so far.

So to keep myself motivated I might give snippets of my writing.

Also, I’m going to start working on a draft book covers for Claude’s Hotel. November would be the best time to start working on that since that’s going to be my break from Claude’s Hotel. Once December hits, revisions, revisions, and revisions.

I’ll share all my draft covers as I make them. Well, that’s all I have to share for now. Keep an eye out and don’t forget to Subscribe!

Claude’s Hotel Quiz

I made a quiz based off my upcoming novel, Claude’s Hotel. The story are about Variants, which is just a fancy name for mutants. Like X-men without all the superhero stuff. Variants are divided in something called classes which determines their special powers and qualities. Also, on twitter I released the promo image that is currently on this blog and the main image of the quiz.
