Eagan Patch: Franken Touts New Assessments To Eagan, Burnsville Educators

As far as U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D) is concerned, No Child Left Behind is in need of radical restructuring.


"The only thing I liked about it was the name," the Minnesota Democrat said during a visit to the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District on Thursday. "But that was the only thing we weren't doing—measuring every child's growth."

Post Bulletin: Franken walks the walk for STEM approach

Al Franken's life has been well chronicled, from his years as an accomplished comedian to his unexpected turn to politics three years ago. But an unusual new detail emerged from his visit to Goodhue County on Friday morning — he has wide feet.


The first-term U.S. senator had to special order what might be his first pair of boots from the Red Wing Shoes Co. They're expected to be ready Monday, two days after Franken visited the manufacturing plant and retail store in Red Wing.

Pierce County Herald: Sen. Franken tours Red Wing plant and shoe

When U.S. Sen. Al Franken arrived in Red Wing Friday morning, he wasn't sure if he had ever owned a pair of Red Wing boots.


But by the time the politician left town, he had a pair from Red Wing's Heritage line ordered and on its way to his shoe rack.

Pioneer Press: Franken tells local students he hopes Congress will leave No Child law behind

U.S. Sen. Al Franken capped off a day visiting students and teachers at Burnsville High School by talking about dismantling the No Child Left Behind law that now governs public education.


Some in the crowd of 75 parents, students and educators joined Franken in voicing dissatisfaction with the law and how it has changed public education. The event was an hour-long "listening session" at Burnsville Alternative High School in Eagan.

Apple Valley Patch: Photos: Sen. Al Franken Visits Southview, Valley Middle

U.S. Sen. Al Franken visited Southview Elementary School and Valley Middle School in Apple Valley on Thursday. At Southview, he read the book "Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type" and fielded questions from students, and at Valley Middle he spoke about his job and issues he's focusing on and also answered questions.

Shakopee Patch: Sen. Al Franken Talks Education With Shakopee Ninth-Graders

World domination wasn't the intended theme of United States Sen. Al Franken's visit Wednesday to Shakopee Junior High, but it became a somewhat humorous touchstone for almost every speaker at an assembly of ninth-graders.

International Falls Journal: State to receive Race to the Top grant for pre-K programs

Half of young children in the state enter kindergarten unprepared, according to the Minnesota Department of Education.


To help combat the problem, the department in October applied for a prestigious federal grant of up to $45 million to go to early childhood programs.

Twin Cities Daily Planet: Northside gets $28 million boost

The Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ) is getting $28 million from the U.S. Department of Education's Promise Neighborhood Grant initiative. NAZ was one of 230 organizations nationwide that applied for the Promise Neighborhood Implementation Grant.


The U.S. Department of Education announced that NAZ was one of only five programs to be awarded in this round of Promise Neighborhood funding. The announcement was made in a press conference Monday at Elizabeth Hall International Elementary School 1601 Aldrich Av. N.
