The Weekly Rune – Raidho

The Weekly Rune, cast for 8 September 2019 on Intentional Insights- by S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts #theweeklyruneFor the week of 8 September 2019The plot thickens

Raidho is the half-month stave through 13 September. Tiwaz is the intuitive rune, and Ehwaz indicates Timing’s message to us. Read right to left is Raidho, Tiwaz, then Tiwaz.

I truly believe that #theweeklyrune includes the keys to making better choices based on keen insight into the present, to help each of us be more active in creating a better reality for us all. That realization process includes learning to tend what can’t just be fixed, and using every tool at our disposal to accomplish that. The runes are such a tool, and in the Old Norse tradition, this process is wyrdweaving at it deepest potential. The runes provide one way we can create ourselves as fit elders, so that we can become well Ancestors upon death.

“Half-month” is an astronomical concept in which each month is divided into two parts: days 1-15, then 16-month’s end. In terms of the runic calendar, each half-month rune is one of the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark, and governs for a tad over two weeks (14 and 1/4 days, or a fortnight).

The Weekly Rune is a three-rune cast. Those runes are the half-month, the intuitive rune, and the overview. The half-month is a set rune, which for the most part follows the traditional ordering of the Elder Futhark. The intuitive stave (meaning, I draw it blind) indicates the life force most available to us, to the focus of the half-month rune into sharper focus. It suggests how we can best handle the half-month energies. The final rune (also drawn blind) provides a high overview of the current time, and speaks from different voices. These voices are usually Nature, Earth, Creation, though are sometimes others. I note who’s speaking each week, as it is revealed.

The short answer is: because. The more nuanced answer is, I ask which sets wants to speak each week. I don’t assume the same elements are in play according to the timing of the runes; I also don’t assume the same elements of my runes are appropriate to speak each week. The progression of casts over the last couple of months have had this sense of ebb and flow, regarding instruction to act then to process. This week’s cast has us back in the process stance, though on deeper levels of being. We’re still focused on how we tell our stories, and have had guidance on why the internal vs external details are important. Raidho continues to pose a choice around what we share of ourselves, and this week’s cast emphasizes walking like we talk.

Learn more about this seasonal progression, and how to draw its insights into the personal spiritual path in Runic Book of Days.

What does it mean?

We can’t truly honor a story–any story–without changing. That is in part why storytelling. It’s in large part the greatest vehicle for change in the human condition, it’s how we relate and connect with each other, it’s how we become inspired to evoke change within ourselves.  Raidho teaches us the correlation between travel–moving through life, or an actual trip–and growth. In order to internalize what a story has to share with our lives, we have to be able to process it. We have to be able to pull over, see the scenery, experience the cultures we move through and of travel, itself. If we’re just constantly in motion, that’s just movement, not travel. We must allow for downtime along the way to internalize the experiences of our journey; else we’re just flying through in a state of distracted anxiety.   Read more…

Raidho is translated as travel, though its deeper implication is now storytelling. Storytelling is what we internalize about travel. Indeed, it’s about getting from Point A to Point B and all the details between. What really crystalizes in the human brain is how the story made us feel, or what meaning we take from it. As I’ve discussed in past seasons of Raidho, it forms the middle part of an equation with Ansuz and Kenaz, which I shapde something like this:

Soothsaying + Storytelling = Meaning
Ansuz + Raidho = Kenaz

Learn more about this seasonal progression, and how to draw its insights into the personal spiritual path in Runic Book of Days.

What does it mean?

In season, Raidho directs us to pay attention to how we tell our story. What happened, how we feel about what happened, how we respond to what happened, and how we continue the narative are all complex aspects of story–which in this case is Life. We must have clarity on these things in order to move on, which is what Ansuz brought. Emphasizing that internal process of clarifying our truth, it left us ready for the also complex consideration of how we relate that to other people, if we relate it, at all. This is the choice posed by Raidho. Read more…

The Weekly Rune – Ansuz(ish)

The Weekly Rune, cast for 25 August 2019 on Intentional Insights- by S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts #theweeklyrune

For the week of 25 August 2019Truth changes need, repeat

Ansuz is the half-month stave through 29 August, at which point we move into Raidho, through 13 September. Eihwaz is the intuitive rune (again), and Nauthiz indicates The Larger message to us. Read right to left is Ansuz over Raidho, Eihwaz, then Nauthiz.

I truly believe that #theweeklyrune includes the keys to making better choices based on keen insight into the present, to help each of us be more active in creating a better reality for us all. That realization process includes learning to tend what can’t just be fixed, and using every tool at our disposal to accomplish that. Without hesitation, I can  say that in the history of TWR, I’ve never never drawn the exact same runes again in the exact same order, from a different rune set.

That’s just weird (wyrd?), yet the emphasis is real.

The nuance of this cast comes from our late-week transition into Raidho (Thursday), and also that the commentary is from The Powers That Be.  Last week’s focus on assessing new needs based on clarifying personal truth sustains, with some changed tenets around what we do with it.

Learn more about this seasonal progression, and how to draw its insights into the personal spiritual path in Runic Book of Days.

What does it mean?

As Ansuz challenges us to speak our truths, we must first have proficiency in determing what that is. This means we must have the processes, skills, and supports in place to do that internal work. Most likely the guts it takes to do that work translates to some sense of foundation from which it’s shared with the world.  That’s what this runecast speaks to more specifically, with the caution not to rush.  Read more…

Opposite

Intentional Insights Soul Tending Missives - Soul Intent Arts

Opposite the system

is still the system.

Transformation within binary and duality is merely rebellion. It’s not out of the box. It exists on the same continuum. To truly generate shift, we have to realize there is no box. When we can do that, we outcreate the system.

I have used the phrase “outcreate the system” a lot on Instagram and in blogs, but what does it mean? How do we outcreate the system? The opposite of a thing always originated from the thing–even when we think the opposite is a better system. Anything we do not to be in the current system isn’t enough. It’s not enough to not be THAT. Announcing and even situating self as not the system is still within the set framework of the existing system, and within the philosophies of those who created and benefit from it. If we want to truly change dynamics, we have to originate our own healthy plan that enables others to do the same, and in order to do that well means maturity, accountability, and responsibility on many levels.

None of us have all of these things. We don’t, because the system is set up for us not to have them, because if we did we would step out of the system. Being out of the system isn’t profitable to those who benefit from it, and is a direct threat to them, as well as the system. As long as we remain marginalized, sick, uneducated, poor, and afraid, we’re controllable by the system.

How do we dismantle that programming in our own lives?

That’s the basics.  These are the starting points. The bigger work?

Show up for regional Nature Spirits. This is the above self-work externalized into Nature. This is animism. Not sure how to do that, let’s talk.

Heal Ancestral lines, yours and the planet’s.  If you don’t know how to do that work, set up a session.Show up in our community(ies). You are your community. There is no division. What you need, it needs, and vice versa. Be that.Ask for help. If you don’t know how to move forward in your life, on a specific dynamic, seek out the resources and people who can help you with that. Again, I’m here.Vote.  Remember that systems are life force. They are alive, and they do not want to die. It is their nature to resist change just as it is ours–because we are all life force with agency. We can put people in power to stave off the system, while we also create beyond it. No love and light here, only do.Do our soul work. Beyond the emotional and mental health work is the tending of soul, which ever evolves and needs. This is not elusive technology. Soul tending is’t outside our access or capability. We can do that.Above all, listen, where the focus is not on you. Listen to what other people have to say about their actual lives. Believe them, and do what you can to support them and amplify their voices.

Unhealed trauma is patriarchy at its strongest. All that we do to outcreate the system is among the most sacred forms of activism we can undertake, because we not only cease perpetuating the system, we create a better way of being for ourselves and others.

This is our current collective requirement to rise to the position of elder, to become a well Ancestor.

‘But all of this stuff is basic healing, personal responsibility, and community accountability 101,’ you say. Yes.

Exactly, yes.

Now you’re getting it. Those are exactly what the system doesn’t want us to do.

In the north, we’re stretching between our first harvest holy day and the second, while the south moves from shadow to light. Both require deep confidance and self-reliance, which this week’s cast demands, as well. Ansuz is framed by runes that reinforce independence and self-motivation, both of which can feel challenging to do under the duress of seasonal extremes.

What does it mean?

As Ansuz challenges us to speak our truths, we are confronted with emotional or mental bombs around doing so. I talked about this in Episode 72 of What in the Wyrd,  as it seems like such a simple undertaking, though it’s anything but. When we are confronted with Ansuz we can rest assured that whatever truth we’re being asked to speak, it is eventually going to come. Instead of prolonging that reality, face the challenges around owning it, and get back to healthy living. Read more…

After Fehu, Ansuz is the first point that our feet plant firmly back in human territory. Or do they? Separated by the Jotnar runes, Uruz and Thurisaz, Ansuz brings a curious emphasis on connection between the Aesir and humanity.

What does it mean?Ansuz means mouth, specifically breath, and it’s widely interpreted as speaking our truth. I’ve written reams (and one book) on how the process we go through to arrive at what our truth is, is what’s really reflected in this rune. The hard part of soothsaying in this sense isn’t really making the words. It’s figuring out what the truth is, so that we can say them. Very different process.  Read the full runecast… If you've benefited from my work and the free content on my site, please support it (me)

The Weekly Rune

Intentional Insights - Soul Intent Arts

I haven’t written a more personal newsletter-style note in a good while, and I hope this one finds you well and weathering your season as in-tune as possible. It seems for the last couple of years that’s been more challenging  to do than cycles past, which makes the work of seasonal alignment even more important… and radical.

With that in mind, I’ve had to face some hard truths. When I became really ill a couple of years ago and had to start peeling off projects, I was determined for TWR not to be one of them. If I didn’t write it as something to share, it would still be a ritual that I engage for myself. Really, I prefer sharing it. But I don’t have the energy, resources, or kind of of boundaries to share at that level, anymore. After 7 years of writing The Weekly Rune, I have decided to make it solely a paid feature through Patreon.

All this time, TWR was completely free. Even when I created a paid version, the free version has always been rich with passion and insights. While I appreciate the support of both iterations, I can no longer continue to give away that depth of content for free. My health and my self-preservation will not allow me to do so. My personal challenges continue to mount, yet I still feel compelled to share my weekly ritual with the runes with you. If you value it as such, or if you’re a longtime reader, I hope you will continue to support it and the effort and love I have given it all these years by joining Patreon.

Going forward the free version will be a one-paragraph summary. To receive the full version you will have to join Patreon, which you can do for as little as $1 a month. Loads of free references to the runes, the elder futhark, the runic calendar, and past posts of TWR remain on Soul Intent Arts.

Cycles happen, and we have to choose how to respond to them. I can’t continue to base how I function on old cycles, old seasons; I have to base it on now. This is my radical reclaiming of this season. What’s yours? I have enjoyed engaging with you and the runes through this work, particularly the half-month seasonal approach to working with them as a calendar. I hope that we can continue to have that bonding point, and that it continues to reach the people that it needs to with its message.

My best to you, from the roots.

About The Weekly Rune

I truly believe that #theweeklyrune includes the keys to making better choices based on keen insight into the present, to help each of us be more active in creating a better reality for us all. That realization process includes learning to tend what can’t just be fixed, and using every tool at our disposal to accomplish that. The runes are such a tool, and in the Old Norse tradition, this process is wyrdweaving at it deepest potential. The runes provide one way we can create ourselves as fit elders, so that we can become well Ancestors upon death.

The full  version comes out every Sunday at Patreon The paid runecast includes:

I did a podcast on this subject, so there’s more info there. (See above)Also, for deep work on coming into relationship with the runes in season, check out my book, Runic Book of Days. Buy the Book

Thurisaz has us thick in the exploration of ourselves, as provoked by life change. Bigger than the specifics of the rune, it points to the timing that’s supported to be able to address what we find within.

What does it mean?

We’ve talked about how Thurisaz being the second Jötnar rune in our seasonal progression. The significance of that is intense introspection, though not the sentimental type. Most often when we talk about introspection, it’s in this cradled, cozy “what do I think? how do I feel?” sort of way. No. Not that.  Thurisaz isn’t that comfortable, and it goes much deeper.

All about the unconscious and how we mine it to be healthy, well-adjusted elders, Thurisaz brings us back to this feeling of needed change. The thing is, that nudge for change is internally driven, which can only come from an unconscious level.

The message from Mannaz, in terms of how we approach Thurisaz this week is very clear: alone. I don’t take this to mean without resources, without teachers, true support, etc. It means without peers, social angst, or approving cookies. The big validation moment that’s usually associated with Mannaz’s more extroverted vibe is not coming. Instead, the work is the validation. The realization of how important it is and how it shifts our lives when we do it, is the validation.

Fehu is the pay off, this week. From the voice of Air, comes the reminder that what seems obvious, what seems so elementary and evident, requires attention–even if only in the form of acknowledgement. Air is largely unacknowledged. We take for granted maybe more than other elements that it will just continue to be there.

We do the same with our unconscious. Because we can’t see it, it’s easy to ignore. In fact, many folks won’t even realize they have these other unseen facets of self that factor into their every response. But if we can bring our awareness to it. If we can notice the unacknowledged parts of ourselves, we can update them to the current specs.

We’ve seen a lot of Fehu over the last few weeks, in various roles of TWR. This is good stuff, overall, though for this week, specifically, the work results in something very worthwhile.

We began this runic year with a bit of tension, which is only exacerbated by the first aett kicking off with a lot of Jötun (þursar) energy. We move more into that larger way of being with Thurisaz, which is a tricky place to be.

Learn more about this seasonal progression, and how to draw its insights into the personal spiritual path in Runic Book of Days.

What does it mean?

The Jötnar are nothing to mess with. They are the primal forces of Nature, and with Thurisaz they are internalized. Uruz is our first meeting with such, in the form of our own unconscious, our raw life force that we have to come into relationship with, to elder well and weave wyrd with authority. With Thurisaz we realize we are a living breathing microcosm of forces that are both fed and limited by external ones.

Where Uruz lets us know we’re still wild, Thurisaz points directly to what we should be doing with it, which is at the minimum coming to know it better. A phrase associated with Thurisaz is “the point that we realize we’re separate from Source,” meaning, we are our own beings. We have to learn to draw on the network of life force within and around us to move through life well. This is the core step of wyrdweaving. Getting the internal cosmology in balance, so that we can evoke the changes we really want to in the greater collective.

Kenaz reversed points to a hindrance in that process. Upright this rune is the AHA! moment. Reversed, it’s the slow-gutting pain we can’t confront. In keeping with the unconscious Jötnar  influences of Thurisaz, that pain is something we’ve internalized as a belief system that is holding us back. Period.

Raidho comes from the voice of Iron, which is the rune set that spoke to me this week. For those who are curious, this set was custom made for me by Patrick Brown, of Five Feline Forge. While Raidho brings the message that we must pay attention to how we tell our story, Iron offers advice around that in the form of permanence. Iron nothing if not has staying power, as do our stories. How we tell them to the world is one thing. The bigger consideration is how we tell them to ourselves.

Vulnerability

vulnerability is your strongest ally - S. Kelley Harrell Vulnerability

is your strongest ally in animism.

Animism is all about relationships, internal and external. The limitations you have in knowing aspects of yourself are the same ones you have with human-people, spirit-people, tree-people. They are all relationships. They all require vulnerability.
