Tired but writing

So, my career tht pays the bills (for now) has me working crazy hours, but I always try to ensure that no matter what the day brings I am always doing something that will work toward writing.

1. Always write - I know that many people say this, and I have mixed feelings about this. There are some days that I may not write, but I will still do something with my book. For example, I carry around a small digital recorder, and I will record different ideas, or the characteristics of an individual who I think reminds me of a character.

2. Always do something - This is more what I like to lean toward. Each day I ensure I do SOMETHING that will enhance the book I am writing, or get some info down for books that are still to be written.

I am in law enforcement, and I will tell you that there is not a day that goes by that I don't find SOMETHING that makes me think... "Hey, now that would work well in a book," or "He/She reminds me of a character.

There is always something going on with my writings.

So go forth and WRITE!

Character Building

Over the last few days I have been “listening” to my characters, and have been watching them as they become deeper in whom they are. I have to say that this is one of my favorite times in writing.
I have to admit that it is like discovering more about your friend; things you didn’t know before. What excites me is that it is like I have a secret about them that I get to share to the readers, but only when I want to, and only as much as I want to.
One of the reasons I am a huge Tolkien fan is because how deep his characters are. So many of them you feel you could have known, and forget that they never really did live. Their history is so colored and full that they are more than just characters in a novel, but you want to be able to research and find out more about them.
What about you? If you are an author are there things about your characters that only you know? How does it affect your writing? Do you attempt to build the history of your character before you write, or do you just kind of know your character?
