Why I Love Apple iBooks

Picture Readers, you may have seen my announcements recently around the web that my September release, Autumn Allure, is available at a discounted pre-order price right now at Apple. For those of you who are Kindle-only readers, you might wonder, Why not Amazon? Why can't I buy it early there? Here's the reason:

Amazon is a Goliath. They pretty much hold a near-monopoly on the ebook market, and many/most readers go there first for their books, which is why many/most indie authors publish there first. A lot of authors choose to use their Kindle Unlimited program as well, which locks in a book to Amazon  for 90 days at a time. That means the book can't be sold anywhere else -- not Barnes and Noble, not Apple, not Kobo, not even on the author's own website. In exchange, Amazon (vaguely) promises better placement, marketing, author & sales ranking, and payment based on pages read.  Kindle Unlimited can be great for some authors. But if you think about it, savvy authors probably want their books available in as many markets as possible, right?

Enter Apple.

I've always tried to sell my books on all the major ebook retailers (although the Hometown Heroes series is enrolled for the summer in Kindle Unlimited, mostly as an experiment). The nice thing about Apple is, they really love their authors. They're constantly offering deals and marketing and promo, and one of the best options they have is pre-orders that can be set up to a year in advance (Amazon limits pre-orders to 90 days ahead of release). Even better, Apple pre-orders are what's called "assetless," meaning you don't have to have a cover or a release date or even a file when you upload to their site (you must have all those for Amazon).

You may recall that I did a short exclusive pre-order with Apple for Soldier of Love, and turns out, my sales there the first month after release were better than my sales at Amazon.

Plus, I have to say, all the Apple reps I've crossed paths with are just really nice people.

So....if you're an iBooks reader, you can get Autumn Allure earlier than if you're a Kindle or Nook or Kobo reader. Not to worry! The $2.99 discount price will be available to all buyers on release day. But hey, if you ARE an iBooks readers, pat yourself on the book and then go ahead and pre-order Autumn Allure, knowing you're supporting a retailer that is good to its authors and preventing another company from cornering the market on all ebook sales. Remember, competition is healthy!

P.S.: Near the end of the summer, I'll be posting lots and lots of Autumn Allure excerpts here to tempt you.....so stay tuned!

Friday Flash Feature!

Picture Welcome back, readers! This week I'm again featuring a fellow author and her new release. Please read on and meet Samhain author Brenda Huber. She's doing a giveaway on her website and social media outlets, so check out the links in her bio just below for all the details about where to find her online. Meanwhile, I'm doing a flash giveaway today for a $5 Amazon gift card, so read below for the question and how to enter!

 BIO:
I’ve always been an avid reader.  With that love of books came a passion to write them.  The first romance novel I ever picked up (and probably still one of my all time favorites) was Captive Bride by Johanna Lindsey.  I own every book she has out.  I have too many other favorite authors that I loyally read to list,  but I tend to lean more toward Paranormal Romance, of course, as well as Suspense and Historical.  I am a determined gardener, despite the fact that my family claims I have a black thumb.  Even I will admit that plants in my household have a 50/50 shot…but I refuse to give up.  I love to study history, particularly that of the American West and Civil War, and Revolutionary War, Medieval European history, and Egyptian history.  Eclectic, I know, but there it is.  I prize spending time with my children above all else.  I live in Iowa with my wonderful husband, my two children, and my very spoiled dog Sam. You can learn more by visiting me on my website  or following me on Facebook and Twitter: @b_hubie.

Today's Giveaway Question: If you could live in any historical time period, which would it be and why? Brenda shared her favorites, so let's hear yours! Everyone who comments will be entered to win a $4 Amazon gift card, winner chosen randomly and posted here on the blog tomorrow. Now let's find out more about Brenda's upcoming release...

Chronicles of the Fallen, Book 4

A legendary sword isn't the only thing this merciless demon desires...

Possessed of immeasurable patience and an unrelenting drive for justice, Sebastian, the Demon of Vengeance, has finally met his match. His mission is to keep the new Guardian safe until the Sword of Kathnesh is retrieved, but the aggravating woman insists on throwing herself into harm’s way at every opportunity.

Finding the sacred relic is Phoebe Mackenzie’s task, and protecting it is her family’s legacy. But when Sebastian resorts to magic to save her life, he unwittingly exposes a secret sealed deep within her—and paints a target on her back no demon can resist. As Phoebe fights to hold on to her identity, Sebastian’s oldest nemesis vows to use any and all means to force Sebastian into a fight to the death—including targeting his mate. Sebastian will do whatever it takes to preserve the barriers between Earth and Hell. But in unleashing the raging storm inside him, he risks losing the woman he loves.

EXCERPT:

The Guardian looked so bedraggled and shell-shocked, leaning against the wall of the
cave as if it were the only thing keeping her upright. Her hair was a mess. Her clothing was
torn and bloodied, hanging from her in shreds. And the scent of her fear was sharp, stirring
his anger.
But she blinked up at him, the will to survive written all over her beautiful face. Something jumpstarted inside his chest, as if a livewire had been hooked up directly to his
soul…or the withered empty husk of what was left of his soul anyway. For a moment, he
lost his purpose. Lost his train of thought. Lost his very reason for tracking her here. All he
could see, all he could hear, or smell, or sense was this female. He didn’t know why, only that
those stunning eyes of hers had captivated him somehow.
She flinched and readjusted her grip on her bloody shoulder.
If he could have, Sebastian would have brought every one of Sïnsobar’s minions back
so he could rip them apart all over again. But his rage wouldn’t help her. And so he battled
for calm. Battled to hear the voice of reason inside his own head.
Sebastian thrust his now clean hand out once more. “Come on, we have to hurry.”
Her emerald green stare turned to the mouth of the cave over a hundred yards away. He
watched, awed and more than a little irritated, as she pushed to her feet and began wobbling
her way toward the exit. She cut a wide arc around him, refusing his assistance. Between
each unsteady step, she braced a shaking hand on the rough cave wall, leaving smears of
blood in her wake. Her pace was slow and labored, but she hadn’t uttered a sound.
After what she’d just seen, after what she’d just been through, he couldn’t fathom how
she was still even conscious.
She was stubborn.
She was strong.
She was…
Magnificent,” he whispered.
He wanted to let her keep whatever shreds of pride she still clung to with such fierce
determination, yet he knew they didn’t have time. He hadn’t exaggerated. Sin could return
at any moment.
She took a misstep and nearly went to her knees, catching herself at the last moment.
Sebastian’s heart lurched. With his chest aching in an odd, uncomfortable way, Sebastian
strode forward.
“I’m sorry, professor, but we’re gonna have to do this my way.”

Friday Flash Giveaway!

Happy Friday, everyone! And welcome to June :) Today's giveaway question has to do with 1st person vs. 3rd person point of view in books. Do you have a preference? If you're not sure which is which, 1st person is told from a single character's point of view, using terms like I, me, my, etc.  The advantage can be really getting inside a character's head and understanding his/her thoughts -- but at the expense of other characters, because you won't know anyone else's thoughts.

3rd person is told from multiple characters' points of view.  With this perspective, you don't always get as deeply inside one character's head, but you can follow the action and thoughts from many characters' viewpoints.

I *just* started working on a brand new project, which won't be out for at least a year, but I'm not sure which point of view I want to tell it from! Here's a look at the beginning, in each viewpoint.

3rd PERSON POINT OF VIEW:

“Well, you’re definitely pregnant.” The Nurse Practitioner at the health clinic, a cheery, blond thing all of twenty-five, if Piper had to guess, leaned against the exam table.
Piper inched away and folded her arms over her chest. She still wore her blue Delta Chi t-shirt, but she’d refused to put on the stupid cotton gown the nurse handed her and only stripped out of her cut-off jeans and underwear. I can’t be pregnant. I’m just tired because of all the studying. And finals coming up. I haven’t been eating right. She wasn’t pregnant. She couldn’t be. They’d used protection. And she was on the Pill.
          “I can’t be pregnant.”
The NP tapped her finger on the form Piper had filled out earlier. “I know you said you’re on birth control. Do you take it regularly?” Her smile changed to a serious expression, paired with a furrowing of the brow. “And by that, I mean, do you take it every single day at the same time? Even changing up the time of day can affect how works.”
“Yeah. Of course.” She wondered if the NP suspected she was lying. She avoided looking down at her bare stomach. Imagining something growing there, taking root and forming fingers and toes, made her light-headed. Neither could she look at this woman with the cheery voice and Piper’s future in her hands. She focused on the single window in the room instead, covered with a blue and white striped curtain that moved in the breeze.
“Well, unfortunately no form of birth control is one hundred percent foolproof. Even the Pill.”
          “Terrific.”

1ST PERSON POINT OF VIEW:

“Well, you’re definitely pregnant.” The Nurse Practitioner at the health clinic, a cheery, blond thing who might be all of twenty-five, leans against the exam table. Like we’re friends. Or like she wants to be there for me, let me know I’m not alone, some bullshit like that.
But I’m more alone than I’ve ever felt in my life.
I inch away from her and fold my arms over my blue Delta Chi shirt. My cut-off jeans and panties are on the plastic chair beside me, but I refused to put on the stupid gown the nurse handed me when I came in. I can’t be pregnant. I’m just tired because I haven’t been sleeping. And because of finals coming up, and all the studying. I haven’t been eating right. We used protection. Plus I’m on the Pill. Double protection. Triple, if you count the fact I never spend the night.
          “I can’t be pregnant.”
She taps her finger on the form I’ve filled out. “I know you said you’re on birth control. Do you take it regularly?” Her smile changes to a serious expression, paired with a furrowing of the brow. “And by that, I mean, do you take it every single day at the same time? Even changing up the time of day can affect how works.”
Duh. I’m not stupid. I know how and when to take the Pill. I’ve been on it since my mother forced me to see her gynecologist when I turned sixteen. Although maybe I am stupid, since I’m the one sitting here in a gray exam room, overcome by queasiness, and Blondie is the one with the flat stomach and the perfect makeup and the job that requires an advanced degree.
“Of course.” I wonder if she suspects I’m lying. Probably. I read in a magazine somewhere that most women lie at least fifty percent of the time to their doctors. About how much they drink, whether they smoke, whether they practice safe sex. Whatever. I don’t even know Blondie. I’m not about to confess every little mistake I’ve made over the last month.
The list would be too long to bear.
I keep my arms folded and my eyes on her face, though it isn’t easy. But it’s better than looking down at my stomach, imagining something growing there under the skin, taking root and forming fingers and toes. She fastens me with a sober gaze. I can’t meet her eyes for longer than a few seconds, so instead I look out the single window in the room, covered with a blue and white striped curtain that moves in the breeze.
Finally she breaks the silence. “Well, unfortunately no form of birth control is one hundred percent foolproof. Even the Pill.”
          Terrific.

So here's today's giveaway question: Did you like one of these excerpts better than the other? Which point of view do you prefer when reading? Does it depend?

As always, one person who leaves a comment will be chosen randomly to win a $5 Amazon gift card today. Plus, you're helping my writing and my research, which I always appreciate. Can't wait to hear your thoughts!  Picture

Friday Flash Giveaway!

Picture Welcome to another Friday giveaway, gang! I'm super-excited today to turn over my blog to a fellow Samhain writer, Sami Lee, who has a new release and a giveaway to share with you all. Don't you just love this book cover? I know I do. And remember, every comment today enters you to win!

***************
Hi all! I’m excited to be here on Allie’s blog. Allie’s terrific Hometown Heroes series focuses on the people who live and love in the small town of Lindsey Point. I love small town stories. My Wild Crush series is centered around the small beachside community of Leyton’s Headland and I’m very proud that all five books have been released through Samhain Publishing (with book 5 the final in the series due out in July). The series explores the theme of secret or forbidden crushes. The most recent release, Imperfect Penelope, is book 4 and has workaholic legal eagle Greg falling for his brother’s ex-girlfriend.

Penny Irving has been unlucky in love—most recently with a man who stole her rent money before skipping town. She’d love to forget the experience, but it’s next to impossible when the louse’s brother walks into her naturopathy clinic. She’d slam the door in Greg Danvers’s face—if she didn’t need the cash he’s offering for yoga lessons. It’s only a week out of her life. No harm done…until the tightly strung lawyer infiltrates her naughty fantasies with wild and wicked abandon.

Greg shut down his immediate attraction to the free-spirited Penny because she was his brother’s girl, then because he thought she broke his brother’s heart. Once he learns the truth, though, resisting temptation is impossible. There’s only one problem. Their incredible night together doesn’t put his infatuation to bed. Now he wants her more than ever. He just has to convince the once-burned, twice-shy Penny that he’s willing to break all the rules for her.

The series is super sweet and super sexy. I hope you check it out! You can peruse all my books on my website  or my Amazon page. And don’t be afraid to give my Facebook page a like if you feel so inclined !

I’d like to giveaway a $5 Amazon gift card to one lucky commenter. To be in the running to win, all you need to do is answer one simple question:

Have you ever had a secret or forbidden crush?

Thanks to Allie for having me today, and everyone else…get commenting!
Best,
Sami

Spring Secrets is Here!

I'm so happy to announce the official release of Spring Secrets, Book #3 in the Pine Point series. If you're a sucker for small towns, elementary school kids, a strong, sexy, tattoed gym owner, a brainy heroine trying to overcome a painful past, and generally quirky characters who are flawed and lovable, I hope you'll give this book a try. Oh, and it has baseball! What better way to bring in the warm months than with a story that stars America's pastime?

Here are some early reviews:

"The reason I keep coming back to Allie Boniface stories is because she has way of shining a light on more than chance love but on the puzzles of life that stir the mind and heart but she does so in a completely organic way..."

"But in essence the story is more than these two individuals. It’s a story about how we all have secrets, whether to protect others or ourselves. About things wish we had done differently, but it doesn’t mean we are less of a person because of our mistakes. Who is to judge when we all have secrets and are not perfect. The important thing is to learn from these mistakes and become a better person. Isn’t that what life is all about? Enjoy this one because it’s another winner for Ms Boniface."

"This is our third journey to Pine Point. Allie Boniface is a wonderful writer who creates rich characters you quickly come to care about. I fell in love with the special needs children Sienna teaches and how their lives touch both Sienna's and Mike's. Your wish is for all these characters to find their happy ever after."

Friday Flash Giveaway!

Picture Only a few more days until the release of Spring Secrets! If you've been reading my excerpts here on this blog for an early sneak peek, you know that Mike, our hero, owns a small, successful gym in Pine Point, and Sienna, our heroine, enjoys working out there almost as much as he does. I enjoy working up a good sweat too, but I do know there are many who stay far away from gyms. So in honor of everyone who prefers to avoid a sweaty, stinky gym atmosphere at all costs, here's today's giveaway challenge:

Create a caption for the photo below. Yup, that's it. Today's YOUR chance to be the writer :)

As always, one commenter will be chosen at random to receive a $5 Amazon gift card -- which means it doesn't matter how clever or creative your caption is, you just have to leave one. Let's have some fun with this today!  Picture

Spring Secrets: Play Ball!

Picture Less than one week until Spring Secrets releases! And since baseball plays a pretty important part in this story, today's excerpt is from a scene in Sienna's classroom where Mike is teaching her special needs students about the sport. (I love his soft side here -- I hope you will too!)

**********

The following week, March surprised everyone with near-record temperatures. Mike checked the weather report three times before leaving the gym, and when it still predicted a high of sixty-five with zero precipitation, he grabbed two gloves and baseballs from his office before driving to Pine Point Elementary.

“Thought we might do a little preseason training,” he said when he walked into Room Eighteen. He held up the gloves. Silas almost fell out of the rocking chair, and his eyes lit up. He ran to Mike and took one of the gloves, stroking the soft leather, and laying it next to his cheek.

“Mr. Mike, we always do read-alongs on Fridays at two o’clock,” Caleb informed him with a worried expression. He turned to Sienna. “Miss Cruz, we always—”

“I know,” she said. She put one hand on his shoulder and steered him to a seat at the table. “But since the weather’s so nice today, how about we read two books instead of three, and then if there’s time, we’ll go outside and play catch.”

Caleb eyed her with doubt, but he didn’t say anything else. After Mike had finished Where the Wild Things Are and I’m Going to the World Series!, he picked up a glove again. “Who can tell me what this part is?” he asked as he ran his fingers over the inside.

“Pocket!” Silas called out. He clapped and beamed.

“You’re right. That’s where we always want to catch the ball.” Mike picked up a ball in his other hand. “Now, does anyone know why baseballs have stitches on them?”

Silas grew sober. Caleb’s face screwed up in concentration. No one answered.

“Well, one thing the stitches do is keep the inside part where it’s supposed to be. There’s a center of rubber inside this leather, but the rubber has to stay on the inside.”

“Can you imagine if our insides were on the outside?” Sienna asked the class.

“Ewww!” said one of the twins.

“We don’t have stitches, but what do we have?” she asked.

“Skin,” Caleb answered. “Lots of it.”

“Right.” Mike said with a grin and tried not to think about Sienna’s perfect skin, or how it tasted after a shower. “The second thing the stitches do is give the pitcher control when he’s throwing the ball. He can hold the ball a certain way, and spin the ball a certain way, to make the stitches catch the air and move.”

The boys stared without speaking.

“Too much?” Mike asked in a low voice.

Sienna smiled. “Maybe. Let’s skip the mechanics for today and just take advantage of this sunshine.” She clapped her hands three times. “I want everyone to put on their coats and line up at the door. We have fifteen minutes before dismissal, and Mr. Mike is going to go outside with us and show us how to throw and catch a baseball.”

The boys tumbled over each other in their eagerness. Dawn moved at a slower pace. By the time she joined them at the door, the others had already inched their way into the hall and toward the back door.
They were the only ones on the playground, which made it easy to pair up and practice throwing. Silas took one glove, Mike kept the other, and the twins and Caleb took turns throwing the ball to them both.
“Not bad,” Mike said. He struggled to keep from laughing every time a toss went wild. Billy had the least control of them all. Most of his throws ended up in the weeds or under a tree ten feet behind Mike. But no one seemed to care. Bailey retrieved them, and sometimes Caleb measured the distance of the errant throw by striding to the tree and back, doing calculations in his head.

“They’re a funny bunch, aren’t they?” he said to Sienna as she reined them in after ten minutes. “I don’t mean funny bad.” He wasn’t sure what he meant.

“Yes, they are,” she agreed. “But they’re my funny bunch.” She took his arm. “And yours too, now that you’re spending so much time with them.”

Friday Flash Giveaway!

Picture Spring Secrets releases in less than 2 weeks! I can’t wait to share this story of Sienna and Mike with you. There’s a “first kiss” excerpt on my blog this week, which is always fun, and it takes place right after Sienna works out at Mike’s gym for the first time. Actually, throughout the story, working out becomes a way for them to release some stress (and build those endorphins too). That leads me to today’s giveaway question:

What do you do to blow off steam? When you’ve had a stressful day, or you have a mountain of tasks ahead of you and you’re not sure how you’ll ever get through it all, what do you do to cope? Sweat? Sleep? Read a good book for escape or go for a long walk or maybe sink into a bubble bath?

Tell me your go-to way for dealing with stress, and you’ll be entered into today’s flash giveaway. One lucky winner will receive a $5 Amazon gift card – which is always good for stress relief, right? Picture

Spring Secrets: First Kiss!

Picture Two weeks until the release of Spring Secrets! Want a sneak peek at Sienna and Mike's first kiss? It happens in the snow, under the stars...

**********

He held up her coat and waited as she slipped first one slender arm and then the other inside. A touch closer and he could wrap her in his arms. He bit the inside of his cheek to keep himself from growing hard again. Then he pulled on his own coat and followed Sienna to the door. Their breath came in long white streams the moment they stepped outside.

“I forgot how miserable this weather can be.” She unlocked her car, shivering.

He glanced up. “But take a look at that view.” Above them, a few stars studded the early evening sky.
“It’s pretty, I’ll give you that.” She blinked and looked upward as well, and her long lashes fell to her cheeks before rising again. Everything in Mike turned white-hot with desire. “I guess I’ll see you around.”

This was the moment she would turn and say goodbye, duck into her car, and leave him standing in the falling snow. Except she didn’t. She stood with her back against her cute little sports car, not moving, her chest lifting and falling, the breath still streaming from between her cherry lips, until on impulse, he leaned forward and kissed her.

He meant to kiss her once, fast and hard, but the moment he tasted her again, his hands went to her waist and pulled her tightly against him. His tongue teased her lips open, and she wound her arms around his neck and kissed him back. She smelled like something spicy and forbidden, and despite the cold, she was fire under his touch. Her cheeks and neck and every place he could feel sizzled with sexuality.

I want you. Now. Naked. Anywhere. Here. The crazy thoughts flashed in and out of his head, and suddenly he was twenty-three again and kissing someone else who’d turned him head over heels with lust.

Mike stopped. He dropped his hands from Sienna’s face and stepped back. “Ah, sorry.”

“Don’t be.” She touched his cheek with the gloved fingers of one hand. “It’s really good to see you again.”
He didn’t answer. He couldn’t.

This time, she did leave. She slipped inside the car, buckled her seat belt, and drove toward the center of town. Mike laced his hands behind his head and watched her go. She hadn’t told him where she was renting an apartment. She hadn’t told him much of anything.

Damn mistake. He had no intention of falling for a woman. He would not, could not, let a woman mess up his head or his heart again...
