On Young Adult Fiction

I’m being asked about writing Young Adult fiction a lot. (Go figure.) I can point to this post, where I could finally announce that Strange Angels had sold and went on to talk about YA, bullshit, and low expectations. That was a year ago, it’s probably time to revisit the subject.

Hello, Strange Angels!
[image error]Today is the release date for my first young adult book, Strange Angels. This is the book I refer to as “Supernatural meets Buffy, with a dash of Appalachian folk magic and some Eastern European folklore thrown in. Oh, and Vampire Hunter D.” (You can find the blurb here.)

Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves
I woke up this morning to the Little Prince watching Akira. This leads me to believe I am an okay mother and to wonder if the millions of books’ worth of the manga are worth investing in. It is also awesome to watch him acting out critical scenes with the sponge-animals he gets out of grow capsules.

The Internet is a marvelous place, full of ponies and rainbows and unicorns. It has also been revolutionary for consumers and readers sharing information. There are a million review sites and ways for readers to rank and talk about and pick apart a book. This is a good thing, despite the echo-chamber factor, but it underlines one thing I wish I could tell newly-published writers.

Trunk Fiction, And Other Fear
I’m giving myself a week to finish up copyedits, more than enough time. Until that week hits, though, I am going to do something I have not done in years–take a break and write some just-for-me trunk fiction.
To me, “trunk fiction” is just like the trunk novel–with the important codicil that I understand it’s not good enough for publication, I’m just writing it to please myself. It will get shoved into a drawer if I ever finish it, and not brought out again–much like my first finished novel. This
