Good morning, Tuesday!

Good morning, Tuesday! Some news: A Girl's Guide To Guns & Monsters is out! I loved the idea of this anthology. My story, Best Friends, is…well, there are teenage lesbian vampire killers. I enjoyed myself to the hilt, writing it. You can probably imagine. Anyway, there's a ton of great authors and great stories in it, so if anthologies are your speed, check it out!

Let's see…there's John Scalzi with a call for author support, and Jay Lake with an open letter to Kindle enthusiasts and ebook...

Good News, and Amazonfail Wrapup

First the news, then the fail. Aren't you excited?

I am pleased and proud to announce that Orbit Books will be bringing out all five Dante Valentine books in an omnibus, with an all-new cover, in March 2011. I've seen some roughs of the cover, which unfortunately I can't share, but they are splendid. I am incredibly happy to be able to announce this. I have other good news, but I have to wait to share it. Which just about kills me.

And now, onto the fail!

Some of you may have heard about a...

I Don't Wanna

First, announcements, then the meat of the post, then Damiversary giveaways. That is the order in which things will occur this Friday. I declare it. Hey, the Muse is just sitting there filing her nails, so I've got to be a petty dictator where I can.

Announcements! You can find a taste of my short story Best Friends over at FlamesRising! The story is in The Girl's Guide To Guns & Monsters anthology, available just around the corner in February. Also, you can find a short preview of my essay...

Wednesday Linkspam

Wednesday. Which means link salad. Especially since I'm sunk in the book, and resenting anything that pulls me away from it.

* This song was in my head this morning. It's uncannily apposite. (White Nights is one of my favorite movies. Baryshnikov's ballon is just so…and he's just so…whew. And Gregory Hines! *fans self*)

* Philip Palmer's SF Song of the Week!

* Author Solutions wants to be seen as a Real Publisher instead of a scam. I am skeptical, to say the least.

* Jim Hines on Remedial...

Making Time, Making Energy

Writing takes emotional and physical energy. And time.

This means you have to prioritize time and energy if writing is something you want to do. One of the biggest mistakes I see novice or unpublished (not necessarily the same thing!) writers committing is trying to fit writing in the same way you fit in bathroom breaks. Or not quite, because writing doesn't have the same biological urgency a full bladder does. (At least, not for most people.)

Plenty of novices/unpublished writers get to the...

Editors Are Not Enemies

Good morning. My plan of "something nice to do for me" this week has been shot–it turns out Legion utterly sucks. I may go see it at Cinetopia anyway–at least I can sit in a dark theater, have a glass of wine, and laugh at the utter FAIL. It kind of burns me–dude, I am so ALL OVER this concept, as anyone who's read the Valentine series can probably guess. Unfortunately, between concept and execution there lieth a huge gap, and the more committees are involved, the more that gap runs the risk ...

Telecast, and Dame Anniversary Giveaways!

Before I get started, I'd like to point your attention at an HP fandom site, the Leaky Cauldron. They're doing a Help Haiti Heal telecast tomorrow; among the prizes will be full signed sets of the Valentine and Kismet (up until Flesh Circus) series.

Also, it's the one-year anniversary of the Deadline Dames. It's somewhat paradoxical, because it seems like just yesterday Devon Monk asked me if I'd want to be part of a group blog; and because it feels like I've known the Dames forever. They're c...

Short But Sweet

…just like my temper today. Ha ha. I got nothin' today, so here's a couple links:

* It's the one-year anniversary of the Deadline Dames. Come over for giveaways, prizes, exclusive spoilers, and more!

* Plus, Philip Palmer (the coolest Welshman since Daffyd op Owen) has started a new feature: the SFF Song of the Week. Check out this week's offering.

As for me, I'm still working away on Dru 4. Tentative title: The Blooming. The book's taken a weird left turn, which is both terrifying and a Good...

I Don't Question The Sun, What Good Does That Do?

Dawn came up, dancing in rose and orange veils. She seemed pretty happy, and just nodded at me while I shambled about getting my coffee and getting everyone ready for the day. I told the Princess the dawn was colorful today, and she was briefly surprised. "It's that early? Wow. Well, mine is not to question solar activity."

Kids are funny. We had a whole conversation about Charge of the Light Brigade last night. Mine is not to question why. That was the hallmark phrase all last night, while...

Let Me Sow Love

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

I've been reading a lot of Thich Nhat Hanh lately. It has helped immensely, especially when it comes to suffering. And I find myself thinking again and again of the prayer of St. Francis.

There is one part of it, the kernel, that I keep repeating to myself.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love.

Day by day, that's what I want to focus on. It starts with me, in my daily life. That's all.
