About C.L. Wilson’s THE WINTER KING

Wynter Atrialan, the Winter King, once lived in peace with his southern, Summerlander neighbors, but when the prince of Summerlea steals Wynter’s bride and murders his young brother, Wynter calls upon a dangerous Wintercraig magic called the Ice Heart and marches against Summerlea.
After three bitter years of battle, a victorious Wynter arrives at Summerlea’s royal palace to issue his terms of surrender. The prince of Summerlea stole Wynter’s bride and slew Wynter’s Heir. He wants the loss replaced. The Ice Heart is consuming him. Wynter hopes holding his own child in his arms will rekindle the warmth in his heart before he becomes the monster of Wintercraig legend, the Ice King.
The Summer King has three very precious daughters whom he loves dearly. Wynter will take one of them to wife. She will have one year to provide him with an Heir. If she fails, he will send her to face the mercy of the mountains and claim another princess for his wife. And so it will continue until Wynter has his Heir or the Summer King is out of daughters.
The plan is perfect—except for one small detail. The Summer King has a fourth daughter. One of which he is not so fond. And she is a fiercely passionate creature, with a temper as volatile as the forces of her weathergift, the power of storms.
This book will be released August 2014 from Avon.

What Reviewers Are Saying
“C.L. Wilson’s imagination is right up there with the best in the business. This uplifting story is streaked with darkness, written in her beautifully lyrical voice, and is very different from her Fading Lands series, showing her versatility. It’s the perfect holiday story.”
~The Good, The Bad & The Unread, on Upon a Midnight (C.L. Wilson’s novella in One Enchanted Season), Grade: A
“…a story of healing, with a beautiful romance, as well as having dark elements. Very nicely done.”

Chatting about the Inspiration for Upon a Midnight, in ONE ENCHANTED SEASON

ONE ENCHANTED SEASON was the brainchild of Erica Ridley, Elissa Wilds, me, and Diana Peterfreund/Viv Daniels (Diana/Viv couldn’t join us in this year’s anthology due to other commitments). We were kicking around the idea at a Novelists Inc writer’s conference a few years back. Elissa and I are conference roomies a lot (lurve those late night chats!) and we lucked out and ended up with the penthouse suite at the Tradewinds Resort & Spa on St. Pete Beach. We hosted a “party at the penthouse” to share our good lodging fortune with our friends, and somewhere between the second and fourth bottle of wine we got the absolutely brilliant idea of writing a holiday anthology together.
It took us a couple of years to get our communal act together, but we finally did and ONE ENCHANTED SEASON was the result. We each picked a Christmas Carol to inspire our novella.
I knew I wanted to write an angel story. I’ve been kicking around a contemporary angel series in my scattered ADD brain for a few years now, and this was my opportunity to visit the story world I’d been thinking about. I wasn’t entirely sure what the story was going to be about. But I knew one scene–and the emotion of that scene–and I built the story around that. The scene I envisioned was this: the heroine and the angel are together in a snow-covered wilderness, at night, surrounded by stars and silence and perfect stillness, listening to the song of the Host / the symphony of the universe.

Two Christmas songs came to mind…the first was Still, Still, Still, which is an absolutely beautiful song. You can hear the Trinity Church choir sing it here. The second was It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, which had the benefit of having lyrics more fitting the story I ended up telling, and also is a more recognizable carol.
My first idea for the story was to write about an angel of death, but then I thought…Christmas, death…nah. Too gloomy! I wanted something more upbeat. So, perky me, what do I end up with? An abused heroine who moonlights as a domestic abuse counselor, a dead schizophrenic father, a looming apocalypse, and Hellhounds! ROFL. What can I say? I veer towards the dark and dramatic in my writing. (Hmmm. That could be why I keep getting assigned to the “Wildest Ways to Kill Off Characters!” panels at DragonCon!)
Those little dark touches aside, the story turned out to be lighter than it sounds, more a story about forgiveness and healing and Christmas miracles, which to my mind fits right in with the holiday spirit. Plus, I got to feature a hunky, super hot angel who makes a mean waffle! What more could a girl want, right?
All in all, I’m thrilled with how this story turned out, and even more thrilled to be able to do a project with friends I love. I hope you’ll give the book a try and I hope you’ll enjoy the stories inside as much as I have.
