The War on Xmas - A Review

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
In "The War on Xmas," Alan Good delivers nine fine short stories, most of which have appeared in other publications previously. As with "Barn Again: A Memoir," Good's novel, readers who prefer to avoid mature language and/or mature themes might consider sticking with the Berenstain Bears stories or Nancy Drew. Good is writing literature about the real world (mostly - there is one story that features a hard-bitten, cynical, second-rate super-hero) for adult human beings.
With the exceptions of "Paris (When I Die)," "Empties," and "The Viscous Cycle," the stories are darkly comic, and all of the stories provide a healthy amount of sarcasm and satire of the state of our nation and society today. Most of the protagonists struggle against economic pressures, societal strictures, and the hard right politics that are increasingly controlling this country's destiny. The lone exception is the narrator of "#AppletonOnHudsonStrong," who is the ultimate embodiment of manipulative right-wing media and advertising.
Good's strongest stories in this collection are the final three, which are linked, following the same narrator through his strained relationship with his wife and his longing to be a good father. "The War on Xmas" plays a minor role in these final tales. The description of the book promises "that this book has almost nothing to do with either Christmas or Xmas." Like real life, the War on Xmas is largely imaginary in this book as well.
As a bonus for other writers (like myself), Good provides a chart at the beginning of the book listing the number of rejections each story received from potential publishers. Some of us are glad that nevertheless, he persisted.
