Cartoonists On Radio 7

Since we had so much fun last time, I'll be dropping by Matt Clark's show The Monday Sampler on KBOO-FM again this Monday, March 21st between 2 and 4pm PDT. I'll be discussing my comics projects a bit, but mostly I'll be there to spin some records from my collection, postwar jazz vocal groups of the LP era (roughly 1950-1985) among them such groups as The Metronomes, The Invitations, The Anita Kerr Quartet and Rex Middleton's Hi-Fi's, many on the original vinyl. The show will also include a live performance by the band Sexy Water Spiders, and a possible phone appearance by folk legend Michelle Shocked.

Portland listeners can tune in on 90.7 FM, and the rest of you can listen online at the KBOO website.

Joe the Tax Guy is now blogging on his new website

I'd like to give a quick shout-out to my accountant and neighbor, Joe Anthony, who has is now blogging on his new website. Recent post talk about how the Oregon legislature is still tinkering with this year's tax laws and how Republican "spending cuts" are really stealth tax hikes for many Americans. Not only is Joe a fine accountant and good neighbor, but he had the excellent taste to hire me to draw the caricature on his website.

Cartoonists On Radio 5

I'll be dropping by Matt Clark's show The Monday Sampler on KBOO-FM this Monday, March 7th between 3 and 4pm PST to discuss my new book Extreme Perspective! For Artists: Learn the Secrets of Curvilinear, Cylindrical, Fisheye, Isometric, and Other Amazing Systems that Will Make Your Drawings Pop Off the Page, and also to spin some records from my collection. I'll be featuring postwar jazz vocal groups of the LP era (roughly 1950-1985) and the selections will likely include but possibly not be confined to such groups as The Metronomes, The Invitations, Lambert Hendricks and Bavan and The Suntones, many on the original vinyl.

Because of awkwardness over online music licensing, the program will most likely not be archived; Portland listeners can tune in on 90.7 FM, and the rest of you can listen online at the KBOO website.

Bingo The Cat

Following on the heels of my recent post about illustrations and comics featuring members of my family, here is a blog post devoted to Bingo, the fifth member.

Bingo

Bingo

I wasn't able to find any illustrations featuring Bingo, but he frequently pops up in my comics, including this Palm Pilot strip, the Dark Horse Presents story Snow Angel, and my latest 24 Hour Comic, I Like To Riff. Bingo starred in his own 24 Hour Comic (creatively titled "Bingo the Cat'), which is a loose wordless remake of Alice In Wonderland. In the sequence below, Bingo meets The Cheshire Girl.

A Model Family 2

Following up on my blog post of a few months ago, here are more examples of illustrations in which I used my wife Eve, son Benjamin and daughter Rebecca as models, (not always with their consent).

Illustration for Portland Tribune, 2001

Illustration for Portland Tribune, 2001

The earliest is a Portland Tribune piece from 2001 when Rebecca was still a babe in arms. To make single mom Eve seem even more burdened, I augmented the family with a couple of extras- a middle daughter and one on the way.

I made frequent use of the family as models for the Modern Love columns I illustrated in the New York Times. The piece with the jilted suitor is a true family production; those are my fingers being slammed in the door, the hands slamming it belong to Eve and Rebecca, and it can only have been Ben snapping the reference photo.

In another Modern Love piece Rebecca switches sexes to portray a boy obsessed with penguins.

For the last piece, done in 2007, Ben and Rebecca were too old to model for the toddlers in the story about a military wife who tries to make do with "Flat Daddy", a cardboard cutout of her absent husband; but photographs pulled from a family album enabled them to appear anyway.

Storyboard, 2007

Storyboard, 2007

The entire family appears in this storyboard for a car ad. You can tell it's a few years old; Ben is now taller than me.

Page from 24 Hour Comic, 2005

Ben and Rebecca make occasional appearances in my comics as well. In the 24 hour comic we are playing a family game where one member thinks of a name and the others have to guess it; "before" and "after" refers to where the guess falls alphabetically.

Panels from "Snow Angel", story for Dark Horse Presents

"Snow Angel" is a story I first drew as a 24 hour comic in 2007 and since reworked in color for the anthology Dark Horse Presents. The heroine is not named, but she is pretty clearly based on Rebecca, so much so that when I drew the character again in a 24 hour comic last year, I found that she had grown taller along with Rebecca. Her annoying older brother is pretty clearly Ben as well, but for some reason I did give them different parents.
