Life with my brain, spring fever edition
I have fallen into a abyssal pit of the dontwannas. I'm also bored and restless, and if you think this is a double-plus ungood combination, you are correct. In the part of my brain that is observing both the dontwannas and the bored-and-restless, I am also annoyed, because you'd think the two would cancel each other out. If I don't want to do anything, how can I be bored? And vice versa.
Piece of cake, says my brain. Let's go do something!
--What?
--Oh, I dunno. Something. Something fun!

Auction updates plus other good karma opportunities
1. The
helptheproject
auction is still ongoing, and lo, there are many cool things in it.
2. The
fluffybunnyfund
auctions & other fundraising efforts were successful!

has had the surgery she needs and is recovering. She's still $30,000 or so in the hole, so again I point you to F-Bod Studios, because the world always needs more weird t-shirts in it.
But the important thing is that

is alive and healthy instead of dead or permanently disabled, and that is due in part to th...

Greetings from Moria
So when Tolkien says the dwarves delved too greedily and too deep, how deep d'you suppose that actually was? In feet?
(Yes, this is for a story.)

speaking of awards
This is a collation of several science fiction/fantasy/horror awards* given to novels: Hugos, Nebulas, BSFA, World Fantasy, Dick, Clarke, Stoker, Tiptree, and Brandon. (I don't know what the heck all this displacement activity is in service of, but there you go.) They are in reverse chronological order, so you don't have to scroll through all the Hugos of the '50s to get to last year's results.
If you notice an error, please let me know!

"This dictionary, however, is a most useful work."
And if you're wondering where the "an eel in the fundamental mud" tag comes from, I point you, gleefully, to [The Devil's Dictionary Dot Com:], which has Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary, not merely online, but hypertexted in an elegant and intelligent way. (Check POLITICIAN. *g*)
I am so geeked by this, it's a little embarrassing.

more from Franz Neumann
First, although Neumann is, as I said, Marxist like whoa and not always particularly nuanced in his analysis, I want to single out this passage as the point where I said, Yes. I like this man. Because it's such a relief, after one has been wading through Nazi ideology, to get a passage that combines common sense with common decency--and in fact insists that both should be common:
Hardly any other ideological element is held in such profound contempt in our civilization as international law...
