Spike Magazine: The Book

SPIKE magazine has always been a source of excellent features. Some madness has gripped them, though, and now they've folded all their best stuff into a 600-page, 10MB PDF that is completely bloody free. This will destroy them. You should help.

If I tell you that the collection features interviews with William Gibson, JG Ballard, Jeff Noon, Iain Banks, Tony Wilson and Ralph Steadman, you should understand that this barely scratches the surface of what's there.

Friday's Guardian

I'll be in Friday's edition of The Guardian newspaper, in the film section, with an essay about "the allure of the retired operative movie." Don't know if it'll be online or not.

Bryan Hitch's ULTIMATE COMICS STUDIO

It's funny. Must be steam-engine time, as Charles Fort put it. I'm working on a short book about writing comics, and then comes Hitch with a marvellous guide to drawing, and working in, commercial comics. Bryan Hitch's ULTIMATE COMICS STUDIO can be inspected and bought via this webpage here.

The RED Weekend

Current estimates say $22.5M, so my guess of 23M isn't so far off, and may even be revised in my favour by morning.

Just sent WIRED UK column to editor. Also filed a piece on the resurgence of the "return of the old operator" movies with the Guardian's film editor, which I think will be published Wednesday.

Thanks to all for the kind messages about the film.

Time to move on to whatever's next.

BBC News – Charity offers UK drug addicts £200 to be sterilised
"Drug addicts across the UK are being offered money to be sterilised by an American charity. Project Prevention is offering to pay £200 to any drug user in London, Glasgow, Bristol, Leicester and parts of Wales who agrees to be operated on."

suckerPUNCH – skeleton of redemption
Future-crazed Chinese design-fictioneer paper-architects imagine what Archigram and Christian Americans might have been like – "SoR is a surrealist projection onto Detroit, the most enlightened of all modern cities. The failure of Detroit was the failure of programmatic singularity, which depleted the city?s energy, turning it into futuristic ruins, or an artificial farmland. This proposal is motivated by the process of ?redemption?, structured through the metaphorical development of a ?catholic savior?. The recovery process is a surgical action and a process of the city?s cellular organ rebirth. An artificial injection programmatically penetrates the remaining farmland, gaining energy while providing the basic nutrients for the growth of new infrastructure and revitalized accommodations."

According to Cafe Kaput, these people will have an album on Bandcamp at the end of the month. It is the Confusing English Electronic Music again. I am, as you know, very fond of all things Radiophonic. Pye Corner Audio's own website is here.
