On Cutting for Stone

Abraham Verghese, Cutting for Stone - The operation with the best outcome is the one you decide not to do. - - As she bent over the child she realised that the tragedy of death had to do entirely with what was left unfulfilled. - - In the bathroom Ghosh felt a sharp pain as he peed and was forced to cut off his stream. 'Like sliding down the edge of a razor blade using my balls as brakes.' - - I always wondered if the good people who send us Bibles really think that hookworm and huger are healed...

On SSDA on Pornokitsch's blog

Short Story Day Africa's Feast Famine & Potluck , along with some of my favorite writers, were recently mentioned on the Pornokitsche blog. YAY! In an annual tradition that is now, uh, 2 years old, I buy a stack of books from the wonderful people at the Book Lounge in Cape Town. Then I mail them to myself and pretend I have a secret admirer with incredible taste. Last year, I got a list of recommendations from Louis Greenberg, a man that knows his literature, and they were fantastic. This year, I turned my Sauronic gaze upon the booksellers and...

Louis Greenberg on Dark Windows

Originally posted on Books Live Q&A with Louis Greenberg TB: Welcome, Louis! So my first question . . . We all need to eat. But you are foodie of a sort. When did the more nuanced appreciation of food’s potential begin? LG: My mother’s expression of her Greek heritage was the closest thing I had to a definitive culture growing up. Despite the pressures of five children and a non-domestic husband, she enjoyed cooking creatively on a tight budget in the way Greek working mothers would – this resulted in honest, hearty food, which was always one of my deepest...

On 'Why Books'

Originally posted on Books Live... Today’s guest blogger for Short Story Day Africa is Sean Fraser. Last year he helped edit the anthology Rapunzel is Dead. This year he is one of the judges for the 9&Under category. Welcome, Sean! Why Books I graduated from Rhodes with a Bachelor of Journalism and Media Studies, so books weren’t part of the grand plan initially. I wanted instead the gritty life of a hardcore news reporter, all exotic destinations and/or danger-defying breaking news. Then I spent two years in the Defence Force (as one did in those days if you were white...

On Encore

May Sarton, Encore - It seems quite unbearable but that is what spring is-the letting go. The waiting and waiting and waiting, and then the letting go. - - She said, 'I'll talk.' I could not help saying, 'But listening is difficult and tiring too; in fact, listening is much more tiring than talking for most people.' - - Yesterday I couldn't do anything. I realize when I have this pain how much I enjoy the little things like packing a suitcase or arranging flowers. If I cannot do them it is very frustrating. - - Almost no writer is...

On Bukowski interviewing de Nooy

Originally appeared on Books Live Short Story Day Africa was thrilled to hear that their 2014 Judge Richard de Nooy was passing through South Africa this May. However our local interviewer, Tiah Beautement, has been hectically busy with writing workshops and other SSDA madness. So she did what anyone in her situation would do: outsourced. In this case, she tapped loyal SSDA sponsor Charles Bukowski * to speak with Richard. Because let us be honest, there is nobody with more spare time on his hands than a dead poet. So welcome Charles and Richard to our latest round of Q&As....
