Video of my one-minute Earth Day 'speech'

Father's Day seemed like a good time to post the video of my remarks on the Mall at the huge Earth Day event (see "Over 100,000 rally for climate and clean energy action"):

This was maybe 50 times larger than the largest crowd I've ever spoken to, and such a crowd requires purely rhetorical speechmaking.  I had originally been scheduled for three minutes — and wrote out remarks for that time slot — but about 45 minutes before I went on, I (like many others) was told to shorten my remarks to ...

As Wyoming goes, so goes the nation? - WY commission votes to disclose fracking chemicals

The Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission voted unanimously last week to approve new rules that require oil and gas companies in the state to disclose the chemicals they use in hydraulic fracturing of underground formations during drilling.

The vote is particularly notable in a state where fossil fuels rule, and suggests that even in places where the oil and gas industry is viewed as an ally the catastrophic Gulf of Mexico oil spill may be convincing regulators that tougher oversight...

Maritime news: BP CEO Hayward goes yachting at posh JP Morgan race, while partner in damaged oil well jumps ship, says "BP's behavior and actions likely represent gross negligence or willful misconduct."

AP:  BP Chief Executive Tony Hayward, centre, sits aboard his yacht Bob, during the JP Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, Saturday June 19, 2010.

The most out-of-touch CEO on the planet, BP CEO Tony Hayward got his "life back" for a day at "glitzy yacht race."  Some reports said he merely attended the event, but AP reports (with photo above) that he was aship while his company — and its oil — runs aground.

Why oh why hasn't Hayward been fired yet???  I suppose it's because the...

The oily operators behind the religious climate change disinformation front group, Cornwall Alliance - Watch their absurdly paranoid video asserting environmentalism is "without doubt one of the greatest threats to society" today

Defenders of the dirty energy status quo, particularly the lobbyists and politicians associated with the oil and coal industry, have repeatedly trotted out a group of evangelical leaders known as the Cornwall Alliance to counter the growing sentiment in the evangelical community that anthropogenic climate change is a threat to God's creation. Cornwall declares that true Christians believe "there is no convincing scientific evidence that human contribution to greenhouse gases is...

Speaking of 'small people' - Van Jones asks, will the energy bill hurt or help all Americans?

The American Power Act includes some strong provisions to lower consumer costs and provide access to new clean energy jobs. But it lacks a few fundamental provisions to truly scale up the clean energy economy, explains CAP's Van Jones.

BP's Chairman got himself in hot water this week for suggesting that his company is not "greedy" and cares about the "small people." Pundits were outraged less by his lies than by his condescension.

Admittedly, he should have chosen a different phrase to...

You should totally apologize to BP

Here's one of the funnier apologies:

BP funds front group claiming oil spill jobs are better than 'normal' ones, storm will clean up oil

Think Progress has the exclusive story on the shameless actions of this Big Oil front group:

Shortly after BP's catastrophic oil spill in the gulf, the New York Times spoke to Quenton Dokken, the executive director of the Gulf of Mexico Foundation, about the environmental impact. "The sky is not falling," Dokken told the paper, adding "it isn't the end of the Gulf of Mexico." ProPublica dug into the Gulf of Mexico Foundation, and reported that the Times had failed to disclose that Dokken and h...

The real shakedown: Barton is top House recipient of oil and gas donations - Conservatives embrace Barton, Biden angrily responds: It's not a 'shakedown' to insist BP takes care of people who are 'drowning'

It is laughable that Joe Barton (R-TX) has the nerve to accuse Obama or anybody of shaking down the oil industry.  The Center for Responsive Politics reports on the real shakedown that occurs month after month from Big Oil's friend on Capitol Hill:

Individuals or PACs associated with the oil and gas industry as a whole have been Barton's biggest patron since he entered Congress, donating more than $1,448,380 since the 1990 election cycle. The figure puts him at No. 1 among all House...

Best Toles cartoon ever

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/tomtoles/2010/06/17/c_06182010.gif

Maybe Toles reads Climate Progress (see "The breakthrough technology illusion").

Toles has been on fire lately.  Here's more, starting with today's "rant":

Friday Rant, YOU edition

A little billowing cloud of brown. Mesmerizing. No, alarming. No, fatal. Fatal to one of the many infuriatingly lazy arguments against climate change. The one that says how "arrogant" it is to think that we mere humans could have an impact on something so BIG as the atmosphere. A drop in the bucket!

Well, the Gulf...

Energy and Global Warming News for June 18: Cutting AC energy use 50% to 90%; If the climate bill dies, does that cede the energy race to China?

An Energy-Saving Air Conditioner

Evaporative cooling plus drying with desiccants equals cool air for less cost.

Keeping air cool in homes and offices this summer will be expensive–about 5 percent of the energy used in the United States each year goes to running air conditioners. But researchers at the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, CO, have come up with a new air-conditioner design that they say will dramatically increase efficiency and eliminate gases that...
