George Shultz on Prop 23: "Those who wish to repeal our state's clean energy laws through postponement to some fictitious future are running up the white flag of surrender to a polluted environment." - Quotes McCain: "We stand warned by serious and credi
California's vision of a cleaner environment and reduced dependence on foreign oil and dirty fuels is now under attack. Make no mistake: Proposition 23 seeks to derail our future through a process of indefinite postponement of our state's clean energy and clean air standards. A future for California based on clean-power technologies is both an economic and environmental necessity.
It's about preserving clean air for our kids and fostering good jobs for our workers. It's about a California...

Juan Cole: The media's failure to cover "the great Pakistani deluge" is "itself a security threat" to America - Time magazine removes its Pakistan story -- titled "Through Hell And High Water" (!) -- from the cover of its U.S. edition
The Great Deluge in Pakistan passed almost unnoticed in the United States despite President Obama's repeated assertions that the country is central to American security. Now, with new evacuations and flooding afflicting Sindh Province and the long-term crisis only beginning in Pakistan, it has washed almost completely off American television and out of popular consciousness….
The likely tie-in of these floods (of a sort no one in Pakistan had ever experienced) with global warming was...
NASA reports hottest January to August on record - August tied for hottest in UAH satellite record*
Last month, NASA reported it was the hottest January-July on record, along with a terrific analysis, "July 2010 — What Global Warming Looks Like," which noted that 2010 is "likely" to be warmest year on record.
This month continues the trend of 2010 outpacing previous years, according to NASA:
It seems all but certain we will outpace 1998, which currently ties for fourth hottest year in the NASA dataset (though it is technically described by NASA folks as tied for the second hottest year with ...
Study finds Fiorina's push to repeal California's clean energy laws would result in job losses
This is a Wonk Room cross-post.
During her debate with Sen. Barbara Boxer last week, GOP Senate nominee Carly Fiorina was repeatedly asked whether she supports Proposition 23, a ballot initiative that would block implementation of AB32, the landmark California climate change law. Fiorina was non-committal at the debate, but two days later released a statement in support of Prop. 23:
Proposition 23 is a band-aid fix and an imperfect solution to addressing our nation's climate and energy...

Wow! Watch the Nissan Leaf's provocative, irreverent polar bear ad, which markets global warming - ... and makes the anti-science disinformers go nuts
I am very interested in your thoughts on this remarkable ad:
Here are mine:
As an advertisement for a product aimed at a specific demographic, I think it is quite clever. I'd give it an A.
And maybe I should add a "+" for the fact Nissan ran this on Thursday's National Football League opener, which featured the New Orleans Saints, the closest thing we have to America's team thanks to Hurricane Katrina. Coincidence? I think not.
UPDATE: I'm giving it another "+" for the response it is...

Jay Rockefeller rebukes coal-powered climate deniers: "Burying one's head in the sand is not a solution"
Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), now the senior senator from the Appalachian state after Sen. Robert Byrd's death this year, rebuked his state's climate deniers at a forum about the future of coal on Wednesday. Wonk Room's Brad Johnson has the story.West Virginia's politics are dominated by coal interests, including the mountaintop removal giant Massey Energy run by right-wing climate denier Don Blankenship. Many of the state's top politicians are in denial about the costs of coal pollution, ...

Attack of the climate zombies! - Anti-science syndrome goes viral within the GOP
They mindlessly deny the science of climate change….
And if they win, humanity loses.
R L Miller is tracking Climate Zombies: Every Republican candidate for House, Senate, and Governor who claims that global warming is a hoax, doubts the science of climate change, and wants a new Dark Ages for America.
Below are extended excerpts of two posts, with permission, from her Daily Kos diary. See also Diagnosing a victim of anti-science syndrome (ASS).
After researching the causes of temperature...
