Alfonso / Review / Armanno

December 31, 2014

Alfonso is a gentle yet searching exploration of a Spanish migrant's feelings and experiences in the country Australia used to be more than forty years ago. Felix Calvino infuses the stuff of everyday life with tenderness and magic. He recovers a lost time and sensibility. The past shimmers back to life.
- Venero Armanno

A Hatful of Cherries: presente e passato nella scrittura migrante di  Félix Calvino
by Eleonora Goi
This essay aims to analyze A Hatful of Cherries, a collection of short stories by the Spanish-Australian author Félix Calvino. By taking into consideration both his biographical experience and the main themes highlighted in his stories, travel, memory and migration above all, I will investigate how Calvino creatively tries to make two different world communicate, intersect and connect, thus establishing a dialogue between the Spain of his childhood and modern day Australia.

Alfonso

December 28, 2013

Dear Friends,My novella, Alfonso, has been released.http://www.scholarly.info/book/376/All good wishes for 2014Félix
__________AbstractAlfonso is a short novel set in Sydney between 1962 and 1971. The protagonist is a man from the northwest of Spain who migrates to Australia to escape poverty. When he arrives in Australia he confronts language problems, homesickness and isolation. He works as a carpenter and eventually buys an old house in Surry Hills, unaware of the cost and commitment associated with old houses and feuding neighbours. When the house is finished he meets a woman and they fall in love, but the woman leaves for England. The story then traces his search for love and in the process he finds a way to belong in his new country. More than a love story, this is a novella about the migrant experience in which all that is known is forfeited in the search for material security.

Felix Calvino’s heartfelt collection of sixteen short stories captures snapshots of other people’s lives, switching between time and place as they unfold in contemporary Australia and on the other side of the world in Galicia, Spain in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War.
Sombre, yet powerful, Calvino’s gentle tone narrates poignant tales contemplating themes of love, loss, life moving ever-forward and those it leaves behind.
