Dr. Davis entered the mental health field unconventionally. He was an accomplished martial artist, known not only for his skill but for his compassion and empathy. He was asked to work with developmentally and psychiatrically challenged men who had been brutalized in institutions most of their lives. They were highly aggressive at times and some staff were getting hurt and so were the men finding it hard to cope with deinstitutionalization. The young aspiring author began working with the violent men and found his true calling. He found that he could read body language with remarkable skill and then develop effective strategies for increasing positive behavior changes. The men immediately learned that this new staff person was safe and not only could deflect their attacks easily, but did so in a manner that kept them from getting hurt. They began to feel safe. And they all managed to communicate and everyone improved. He did not abandon Kung Fu and wrote 101 Self Defense Techniques of Kung Fu, Alpha Publications in 1993, still available 434-480-2104. Dr. Davis more recently served as The CEO for a multi-site Federally Qualified Health Medical, Dental and Mental Health Center in Virginia.
