#Review: NEVER WAGER WITH A WALLFLOWER by Virginia Heath

   4 of 5 stars

Miss Venus Merriwell has a knack for picking the wrong men to fall in love with. The first man left her humiliated when he ran off with another after their courtship, and now she was keeping company with the dodgy and much older Lord Dorchester. None of them rile her like the impossibly handsome scoundrel Galahad Sinclair, her cousin with her sister's marriage to Galahad's cousin, Giles. Venus sincerely wants to loathe the charmer and sometimes goes out of her way to be snippy to him, but what's the real reason he vexes her so?

Galahad Sinclair had been taught a series of life lessons at an early age--don't trust easily, never show weakness, and always look for the next best business deal. Now relocated to England after helping his cousin Giles retain the dukedom, he even keeps his newly discovered family at arm's length, including the delectable Venus.

I loved all the banter between Lee and Gal, although I got a little tired of all the internal dialogue. I was losing interest about halfway through, but I truly wanted to see how the author would tie up their romance. It was definitely worth the wait. This was when the internal dialogue was absolutely necessary to understand of what each of them was thinking. After some misunderstandings and a series of unfortunate accidents, Gil and Vee finally get there happily ever after.

I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy, and all opinions are my own.

#Review: THE RAKE AND THE ROSE by Eva Devon

4 of 5 stars

Ms. Devon is one of my favorite authors, and this book doesn't disappoint. Alexander Markby, sixth Earl of Derby, has loved Rose Digby since they were children, but when her father breaks the contract with Alexander's father, he throws them off the land while Alexander is powerless to stop them. When Alexander finally becomes the new earl, he does everything in his power to secretly help both Rose and her brother Henry enjoy better lives. As a matter of fact, Alexander is the benefactor for a number of other artists--people who would not otherwise be able to hone their craft while trying not to starve. He portrays himself as a rake and a darling of Society, but he longs for a loving partner. Of course, the only one he wants to marry is Rose.

Miss Rose Digby was devastated when Alexander pulled back from their friendship after the horrible circumstances with her father. She's harbored an intense dislike for his frivolous ways while she labors away, writing pamphlets trying to better the lives of those less fortunate. Of course, she doesn't know that Alexander is the one behind her payments. When she comes up with a crazy idea to help fallen women, she must seek Alexander's help in infiltrating a pleasure house.

This story was a little different than the usual historical romance because it's a woman who is immovable in her opinion. Rose will not forgive Alexander for abandoning her, and she has left all joy behind in her life, trying to make things better for those who cannot speak for themselves. Rose has a lot of growing and changing to do, and I loved how Ms. Devon made sure her feelings did not change on a whim. Alexander has always been a good man who enjoyed the beauty in life and tries every day to help someone. When he agrees to help Rose, he can't help but hope her opinion of him will change. Unfortunately, that didn't seem to happen. This is a well-crafted story and the plot moves along nicely. I did think Rose was a bit harsh in her judgmental way. Through a myriad of misunderstandings and a few twists in the book, Alexander and Rose finally get their happily ever after.

I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy, and all opinions are my own.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Harlequin

EXCERPT:

The music slid over Damon Bradford’s skin like a lover’s caress. He sipped his cocktail, the smooth taste of gin lingering on his tongue. Better to focus on that then the slow, languid heat spreading through his veins as he watched her.

The cellist.

Music had never been an important part of his life. He knew the difference between classical and rock, paid hefty sums for bands and singers to perform at the various functions he hosted throughout the year. But the actual music had always been background noise.

Whereas this…the rich, somber notes of her solo rising and falling with perfect precision, the languid tempo encouraging listeners to slow down, to forget the demands of life for just a moment…

It was unlike anything he’d ever heard before.

Just like the woman behind the cello was unlike anyone he had ever encountered before.

Emmy's interest in romance can be traced back to her love of Nancy Drew books, when she tried to solve the mysteries of her favorite detective while rereading the romantic chapters with Ned Nickerson. Fast-forward a few years when she discovered a worn copy of "A Rose in Winter" by Kathleen Woodiwiss on her mother's bookshelf, and she was hooked. Over 20 years later, Harlequin Presents made her dream come true by offering her a contract for her first book.

#Review: A DUKE'S LESSON IN CHARM by Sophie Barnes

 5 of 5 stars

This was a delightful story of enemies to lovers, and Ms. Barnes weaves a wonderful story of mishaps and accidents. Callum, the Duke of Stratton, has always been regarded as honorable and unflappable, that is, until he's in the company of Lady Emily Brooke. Then, he becomes a babbling and clumsy idiot. He's either stepped on her toes, spilled wine on her, or, worst of all, ripped her dress, all because he becomes so flustered around her. So, he did the only thing he could and has avoided her for six years.

The one person Lady Emily wished to avoid was the Duke of Stratton because every time they'd been in the same room together in the past, something horrible always happened, but when she ran into him while walking her dog, she was surprised to see a young boy with him. Come to find out Peter was now his ward after losing his parents, and her little dog has done the one thing that Callum hasn't been able to do--put a smile on Peter's face. Thus began a tentative truce in their relationship.

I really loved how the powerful Duke of Stratton could be reduced to a nervous wreck, and it was fun to watch him change and grow in Emily's company. He was taken by surprise that the more time he spent with Emily, the more he wanted. When she began to show interest in him, he wanted to be more than her friend. When she suggests a fake courtship, he agrees, and that's when things spiral out of control. The whole plot around the three dukes writing a book was quite inventive, but it also led to a series of misunderstandings that threatened to cost Stratton Emily's affection before they finally got their happily ever after.

I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

EXCERPT:

He could do this. Play nice and dig deep to dredge up the charm that used to come to him so easily. He’d unearthed it anytime a food critic or reporter came to town interested in reviewing the restaurant. If he thought of the woman as someone he needed to impress, like a critic, then maybe it would be easier to get through the next few days.

What were four measly days in the grand scheme of things, anyway?

Just nearly a hundred hours of misery. Pure misery.

Nothing to worry about, he thought derisively.

Scoffing, he removed the sauce from the heat and set it aside. Owen glanced at the clock. Time was growing short before Miss Young arrived. If he hurried, he could whip up the sour cream lemon blueberry Bundt cakes he planned to offer for dessert that evening. He’d already made strawberry pudding that would be served with shortbread squares and fresh whipped cream topped with candied lime peel.

Determined to have the cakes baking before Miss Young messed up his afternoon, he rushed to mix the ingredients and was just sliding the last cake pan into the oven when he heard Mayor Mitchell Kane speaking to someone as they entered through the back door.

Owen really needed to get a keypad lock back there one of these days. Grumbles drifted under his breath as he set the timer for the cakes, quickly washed his hands, and turned with a towel in his wet hands to greet the interloper who was about to completely upset his schedule for the next four days.

Despite what Nate had mentioned about her not being too hard on the eyes, Owen wasn’t prepared for the woman who stepped into the kitchen with Mitch. His hands stilled, clenching the towel as he took in her appearance.

Dark brown hair flowed over her shoulders in thick, chunky waves. Apple cheeks tinged with pink, lips that appeared entirely too kissable, and the slightest smattering of freckles on her nose gave her a girl-next-door vibe. Pretty brown eyes sparkled like fizzy root beer but looked intelligent and interested when their gazes connected.

The mayor helped her remove her coat, and Owen’s mouth went dry at the sight of her curvaceous figure. He sucked in a breath and inhaled a delightful floral fragrance that tantalized his nose.

What was he supposed to do with this beautiful being when he’d been expecting a middle-aged foodie with money as expandable as her waistline?

This was even worse than he’d envisioned. He had no time for distractions like Tawni Young, who certainly lived up to her name. She looked young. Fresh-faced. Yet the name Tawni made him think of a jungle cat and something that held a great deal of danger.

If the attraction he felt to her was any indication, she was going to be nothing but trouble to him.

Excerpt: A LESSER GOD by Don Hackett

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Don Hackett will be awarding a $10 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

As a young man, Dion Athamas was spiritually summoned to rapture then tenured god status. He had been endowed with all the benedictions to achieve sacredness: a devout flock, the power to heal and a covet for control. He also held a deep desire and ability to influence justice and universal liberty. The setting: the fictional town of Forgedmont, Mississippi, in the 1950s. Against great opposition he strived to become a new-age god; the earth was his oracle. He found faith-based conviction to be lacking in reason and truth. He chose to maintain an instinctive path to holiness. Regrettably for him and his followers, there were a great many roadblocks. He was forced to face off against the church, community, prejudice, family and scheming dreams influenced by fallacious spirits, all set forth to hamper his ascension to divinity.

Excerpt:

Test-tube love,
your hands are full,
your mind
is empty,
your pride can kill.
Pressure for life within the womb
With no clearance from God
On the road to the tomb.
Inside,
Outside,
No reason to stay,
A meaningful art in an
Inartful way.
Bring into light!
From
The darkness
Of blood,
The unwanted bare
With a shield from above.

I still had no idea who could be sending these poems. One wouldn’t have to be a Scotland Yard detective to figure out that the same person wrote both of these ludicrous poems. Who and why was a complete mystery to me. I was not an old man, and I knew nothing about any abortions. I was positively sure that my mom wasn’t having an abortion. I thought someone might be trying to be ironic, or just a pain in the rear—the latter being more likely.

About the Author:I have been writing poems and short stories for most of my life. It was not until I retired from my government position working with Special Needs individuals that I was able to focus on writing full time. The treatment of Special Needs people fostered in me a search for the explanation for the absence of morality in mankind. I have degrees in psychology and sociology from the University of Calgary, Alberta.

Excerpt:

Grace hugged Christy again before her friend left.

“Okay,” she said as she set her bag on her chair, then closed her laptop, setting the computer in its designated compartment as she ran through her mental checklist.

She needed to get over to the shop and get orders filled. New photos had to be taken for Instagram. Then she needed to contact their supplier…

Her thoughts vanished as she glanced across the street.

The hand she’d lifted to slide her hair behind her ear fell to her side as she stared at Jagger leaning against the Stingray’s driver’s side door as he sat parallel parked in one of the metered parking spots.

He wore a navy-blue tank top and khaki cargo shorts. Dark sunglasses covered his eyes as he crossed powerful arms at his chest. Gorgeous and dangerous.

“Oh, God,” she shuddered out, barely remembering to grab her laptop bag before she walked to the door and stepped outside, moving down the sidewalk instead of crossing the street to talk to the man who was supposed to be anywhere but there.

She glanced over her shoulder, muttering a curse when she realized he was right behind her.

With his next step, he fell into pace beside her.

She hesitated, then moved faster, wishing like crazy that she hadn’t left her Sorento at the shop. What was she supposed to do? What was she supposed to say? Because this wasn’t supposed to be happening. “What are you doing here, Jagger?”

     “What are you doing here?”

She stopped in her tracks, clutching the strap of her bag as she faced him. “I live here. I work here.”

“What about photography? What about your pictures?”

She huffed out a laugh at his out-of-left-field question. Since when did he give a damn about her career path? Since when did he care about her at all? “Go away, Jagger.”

She hurried up the one step to her aunt’s flower shop, shutting the door before he could follow. “We’re closed,” she said, staring into his aviator lenses through the panel of glass, twisting the lock into place with trembling fingers.

She closed her eyes, then opened them, blinking when she realized he was gone.

“Why is this happening?” she whispered, resting her back against the doorframe as she pressed a hand to her jittery stomach.

She peeked over her shoulder again, relieved that he was still gone.

“Is that you, honey?” Aunt Maggie called from the back.

Grace slid clammy palms over her pants, smoothing herself out. “Um, yup. I’ll be right there.”

“Good. We’ve got some pretty ones back here today. The dahlias are— Oh my word!”

“What?” Grace pushed off the door, hustling toward the back as the surprise in Aunt    Maggie’s voice registered. “What’s wrong?”

Grace clenched her jaw when she stopped in the doorway, having forgotten that Jagger knew his way around the place. The alleyway door was always open for delivery and flower processing in the morning. He’d helped with the flowers numerous times during their summer vacations.

#Review: REALM OF SHADOW by Thea Atkinson

5 of 5 stars

After being blown away by book 1 in this new series, I couldn't wait to read and devour this book. When we left off, intrepid monster hunter Ava Ashe, is being blackmailed into accepting a job to kill the Fae king before his coronation. If she doesn't follow through with the assignment, one of the Fae warriors, Flint, will kill her sister. Even though Ava's sister won't even accept her calls, there's no way that Ava will let anything happen to Kit. Her one weakness is a gorgeous High Fae, Stone, and they nearly get it on when all hell breaks loose. The Fae Mafia kidnaps her and brings her before the Mafia boss, Terran, in Fae land. Come to find out, Stone is the son of the boss, and now Ava feels totally betrayed that her would-be lover had an ulterior motive for being with her.

When she is thrown into the Fae dungeon for insubordination to Terran, she finds out that another Fae she knows, Blade, the owner of the tavern where she's kidnapped from, is the boss's dark enforcer and also another son. It takes 3 days and a very horrifying lesson from Blade when he transforms into a hellhound before Ava knows she can't bluff her way out of the assassin job. Unfortunately, to be ready to infiltrate the Fae King's coronation ceremony and catch the eye of the king, she needs a special dress only available by a hermit-like dressmaker. This dressmaker can only be reached by traveling along the Shadow Road, a road filled with all manner of monsters. She still hasn't forgiven Stone for his betrayal in having her kidnapped in the first place, and when he volunteers to accompany her, Terran insists Blade be the one to take her. This sets the stage for a roller-coaster ride of emotions.

Miss Atkinson is a master storyteller and has an unbelievable imagination for all manner of bad situations and monsters for Ava and Blade to encounter along the Shadow Road. All the while, Ava is cataloging everything about Blade because her ultimate goal is to kill them all--Terran, Blade, and Stone, plus any other Fae that get in her way. Ava is one badass woman, but she's still human, and when she comes against stronger Fae and their magic, it forces her to do the one thing she hates--have patience and wait for the perfect opportunity to carry out her vengeance. Her skills and endurance are sorely tested when she's betrayed again and taken by a horde of low Fae when she and Blade stop for the night. Now our girl Ava is in serious trouble. She's half-naked and has no weapons except her bravado and skill set as a monster killer.

If you like pulse-pounding action with all kinds of twists and turns thrown in for good measure, you won't want to miss this second installment of the series. To fully appreciate how Ava ends up in a Fae dungeon in the first place, I recommend starting with book 1. You won't be disappointed!

I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy, and all opinions are my own.

#Review: MUST LOVE SCOUNDRELS by Shana Galen

5 of 5 stars

I'm a huge fan of Ms. Galen, and her The Royal Saboteurs series is quite enjoyable. "Must Love Scoundrels" is my favorite of the series thus far.  Lucy Galloway & Duncan Slorach are agents sent to protect the Prime Minister's young son. They pose as brother and sister and take up positions as nanny and footman as they try to uncover the plot and who's behind it. What they found out is more than either of them had thought, and they must unravel the clues to find the would-be murderer.

I really loved how the book opened with Lucy trying to best Duncan on the obstacle course. I liked Lucy's determination and commitment to being the best agent she could be despite always feeling like second best. Coming from a family of famous agents had her always striving to prove herself. Duncan was adorable. I loved how sweet and considerate he was, but he was hiding a dark secret of his own. Lucy thought he was too sweet, too nice, too everything, and that's the last type of man she wanted to be with. She also had no idea he's been in love with her since he met her. She had no time for love and didn't even think she was capable of it.

Ms. Galen does a fantastic job of doling out the clues to uncover the murderer. Both Lucy and Duncan each had their own strengths, but together they were the perfect team. As they race to uncover the villain, Ms. Galen keeps the suspense high, all the while having Lucy and Duncan grow closer. I absolutely loved the ending. It was so fitting. I can't wait to read the final book in the series.

I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy, and all opinions are my own.

Interview with Randy Overbeck, CRUEL INTENTIONS

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?

Cruel Lesson is an atmospheric, amateur sleuth mystery, the first in a new series set in schools called “Lessons in Peril.” The story involves a rogue, hallucinogenic drug being pushed in a middle school and, after it results in the death of four students, the rush to stop the drug pusher before more children die. The narrative takes place in a small district in a rural Midwest town during October, 1994 and all the characters (heroes and villains) come from the school arena. The story is told primarily from the perspective of two protagonists, Assistant Superintendent Ken Parks, and fourth grade teacher Stacy Thompson, two ordinary educators caught in the middle of a life and death crisis.

Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?

For the first book in my “Haunted Shores Mysteries,” Blood on the Chesapeake, I went the traditional route, querying almost 100 agents who listed mysteries as one of their priorities. About a dozen agents asked for partial or full manuscripts but, in the end, none of them took on the manuscript. Then I vetted small presses and pitched the manuscript to three. Two of the three offered me a contract. After reviewing the two, I chose the Wild Rose Press and have been there since, quite satisfied with the publisher-to-author relationship there.

Do you have an ARC review team? How did you recruit your reviewers? BookFunnel? Readerlinks? Booksprout?

I haven’t used these resources yet, though I plan to add some of these to my marketing strategy. Rather, I have a team of beta readers. These readers support my writing rather than my marketing efforts. The team of about ten readers receive my work in process, each one third of the manuscript at a time and give me feedback on the WIP. Their insights help me make my novel the best it can be.

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?

I’m lucky that I can compose in a range of environments, but I prefer to listen to music, though it has to be without words. I have very eclectic musical tastes—classical, new age, smooth jazz, movie themes—but playing some quiet tunes in the background helps the words flow.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?

I’ve found I’m somewhere between a plotter and a pantser. By the time I start my story, I’ve developed some basic structure points that I’ve “outlined” in a very loose manner, determined main characters (for which I created a character board) and some other plot details. Since creating accurate settings is critical to my storytelling, I also have copious notes on these. From there, I let the muse take over.

Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?

Of course. I’m an English teacher—or at least used to be—so I take great pains to make sure my writing is as error free as possible before I’m ready to take it to the next level. But there are always things I don’t catch, words or phrases I misread or other miscues that a skilled editor will notice and help me to correct. But more often, I found a skilled editor can see things in the manuscripts—omissions, possibilities, alternate routes—that an author might not be able to see. An talented editor can make a real difference in a manuscript.

Is your book available in audio format? Briefly describe how your narrator was chosen?

I went through ACX and auditioned several narrators before selecting the one I chose, who rendered a powered, nuanced and even appropriately humorous narration of all three entries in the Haunted Shores Mysteries. I’m working now on selecting a narrator for my new novel, CRUEL LESSONS.

Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book? Do you try to write everyday or carve out certain times during the week?

It kills me. I found you can never do enough marketing—there are always more avenues to pursue, more contacts to make, most posts to release—but what I want to do, like most writers is, write. Although I found, with my life, it’s not practical to carve out a time everyday to write as much as I want to. I do my best to write a few hours most days and then work on marketing about every other day or so. I always have a goal, a target for writing projects to keep me focused.

Besides writing, do you have any other passions?

Family. I have a great extended family with brothers in three states and my own children living in three different states. When I can, I travel to spend time with the family I love.

What’s next for you?

My latest project is a new writing direction for me. I’m putting the finishing touches on a historical suspense about the Culper Ring, Washington’s  spy organization during the Revolutionary War.
