Excerpt:
“Starting Initial Point,” the pilot announced. “McGill take over.”
No dodging it now. The bombardier took the controls for the bomb run.
Seconds ticked away. Ted’s gloved hand clenched the pencil. He forced himself to relax before he broke another one. He couldn’t plot their course on the map without a pencil.
The aircraft reeled from explosions nearby. The bumpy ride made him think of an old truck driving at top speed over a rutted, muddy road in the middle of the night. Unable to dodge the holes, even though he knew they were filled with dynamite. Unable to stop. Just straight ahead until he blew up.
Come on, Come on. Get it over with and get out of here.
“Bombs away.” The beautiful, gorgeous words came through the intercom. The plane lurched upward at the loss of its heavy load. He let out a sigh.
“I’ve got it,” Rollins announced. The pilot took back the controls and maneuvered away from the drop zone.
Ted marked the spot on the map and started his calculations for the return leg.
“Hang on. We’re in the middle of it,” the pilot warned only an instant before an explosion jarred through them.
The plane bounced and shook.
Then another, louder bang.
Ted’s seat collapsed, tossing him to the floor. His head hit something.
Blackness alternated with blurry, bright light.
Fiery pain burned through his thigh. His hand searched for the wound. He gasped for air. His oxygen tube must have pulled loose.
Someone hovered over him. “Kruger’s hit.” It was McGill’s voice. Clutching his tightening throat, Ted watched as Mac stuck the tube of a walk-around bottle into Ted’s mask.

#Review: ALWAYS THE BEST FRIEND by Emily E.K. Murdoch

Montague Cavendish, the Duke of Devonshire, is being pressured to wed by a codicil in his grandfather's will. His time is running out to find a suitable bride, but none of the young ladies on the marriage mart appeal to him. He turns to his best friend, Harry aka Lady Harriet Stanhope, for advice. Harry has been by his side since they were children and she is always the one to calm him down and offer good advice. Harry has loved Monty for as long as she can remember, but Monty doesn't view her as a woman and suitable bride. She takes a risk to capture his heart, but will it backfire and separate her from Monty forever?
This was a short and easy read although not much happens. First, I loved the cover and it’s what drew me to the book, however, I wasn't in love with either Harry or Monty especially since the biggest obstacle in the story is their own stubbornness to say what's in the hearts. I found Harry's actions that lead to the scandal totally out of character for a gently bred young lady and then her actions concerning Monty after the scandal broke was uncharacteristic for someone who always faced any obstacle head on. Not sure if I'll read any more stories in this series.
I voluntarily read this advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

At thirty-seven, Valentin Belmonte returned to his mother’s house with his tail between his legs. No surprise there. His life had been a long line of bad choices, failures, and trouble. Also returning home, freshly graduated and on the hunt for a job, was Mina Toussaint, the orphan Val’s mother and stepfather had taken in when he was already grown. She’d been the only person who’d ever really liked him, but he’d screwed that up a long time ago.
Mina’s adoptive family had treated her like the perfect princess and little girl they always wanted. Val was the only one who’d ever seen her for who she really was; she’d never wanted to be a princess. But after what happened when she was sixteen, she thought she hated him. Now, six years later, things were different. She wasn’t the child she’d been when she got so angry. The trouble was that Val hadn’t changed. He still saw her.
Frankly, he saw too much.
Excerpt:
Val’s eyes flicked to Mina and back to Dante. “She doesn’t like skirts.”
How the hell had he known that? It was true. She tried it occasionally, and it always ended up badly. She hated stockings more than anything.
“Besides, she looks good in a power suit.”
Mina looked up to find Val’s eyes traveling up and down her body. Her cheeks flushed, and when his eyes met hers, her heart skipped a beat. “Very professional,” he said.

Excerpt: “I feel like the world is spinning around me,” I said.
“That’s what it’s like to be drunk,” Nick commented.
“Yes, but I also mean in general, even before drinking. My mom and dad are arguing at night. They never argued before. My mom complains and my dad stays silent. That’s the norm.”
“I feel sorry for your dad,” Nick made a face.
“I guess. I’m worried that they’ll get divorced.” I hadn’t even acknowledged the fear to myself.
“It happens,” was all he said to comfort me.
“Not to my family,” I protested.
“If you say so,” he shrugged.
“I think my brother is lonely but I don’t know how to help him have friends.”
“He’ll be fine. Plus, he didn’t seem lonely to me,” Nick replied. “You’re a talkative drunk, aren’t you?”
“I’ve never been drunk before. And Martin’s mad at me because I said stupid things,” I complained.
“If Marlin knows you, he should know most of the stuff that comes out for mouth is dumb,” he grumbled.
“I’m scared,” I wasn’t sure if my fear was of being drunk or just in general.
“You won’t die so stop with the melodrama.”
“But I feel like I’m in a tunnel,” I was having tunnel vision.
“That’s because we are,” he sighed.
“Nick, can I ask you for a favor?”
“You want more from me than an escort home in a taxi?” he glared at me. “What favor do you want?”
“Can you hold my hand?” I looked at his hands, “I know you don’t like people touching you.”
He chuckled. “What makes you say that?”
“You always avoid hugs and handshakes,” I replied.
“You’re observant,” he scrunched up his nose. “People are dirty.”
He reached over and grabbed my sweaty and sticky hand.
His nose scrunched up even more, but he didn’t complain.
The warmth of his hand calmed the nausea. He held my hand the whole ride and only let go to pay the dr

Happy 4th of July, 2020
This year in the covid-19 pandemic, the fireworks in Boston have been cancelled. It is indeed a challenging time, but necessary in these trying days. Whatever you decide to do, I wish everyone a safe holiday!
Fireworks at the Washington Monument, Washington, DCIndependence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the national day of the United States.
During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia declaring the United States independent from Great Britain. After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4.
A day later, John Adams had written to his wife Abigail:
The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.
Adams's prediction was off by two days. From the outset, Americans celebrated independence on July 4, the date shown on the much-publicized Declaration of Independence, rather than on July 2, the date the resolution of independence was approved in a closed session of Congress.
There is no question that July 4, 1776 is the date that the Congress approved the final official document, having voted to declare independence two days earlier. Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin all later wrote that they had also signed it on that day. However, most historians have concluded that the Declaration was signed nearly a month after its adoption, on August 2, 1776, and not on July 4 as is commonly believed.
In a remarkable coincidence, both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as Presidents of the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration. Although not a signer of the Declaration of Independence, but another Founding Father who became a President, James Monroe, died on July 4, 1831, thus becoming the third president in a row who died on this memorable day. Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President, was born on July 4, 1872, and, so far, is the only President to have been born on Independence Day.

Interview with Mary Ting, GENES

I’m mostly use Facebook because that is where I met my fans first. I also use Instagram and twitter, though I prefer Instagram. I like looking at pretty photos with books.
Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?
Definitely, but my publisher does an amazing job at marketing so I don’t have to do as much if I were to publish on my own. I believe authors have a responsibility to reach out to fans. They like hearing from us.
What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?
Make sure to have a great cover and edit your work. Make sure you know what genre you are focusing on. Give away ARCs and also do giveaways. This is one way to get out there.
Besides writing, do you have any other passions?
I enjoy watching movie or binge watching on Neflix, Amazon, Hulu, and others.
Some fun facts about you, which do you prefer – dogs or cats? Chocolate or vanilla? Coffee or Tea? Talk or Text? Day or Night?
Dogs. Chocolate. Tea. Talk. Night
What’s next for you?
I have a clean, sweet, contemporary romance book coming out this year, November 10th with Rosewind Books, called When the Wind Chimes . Below is the blurb.
SOMETIMES ANGELS COME IN HUMAN FORM.
Kaitlyn Summers is heartbroken.
When she receives an invitation to spend Christmas with her family on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, she feels it may be the perfect medicine.
She throws herself into helping her sister’s struggling art gallery, even taking a temporary job for extra money by looking after a little girl from her nephew’s school. She also begins to paint again, something she’s been unable to do since her breakup. It’s tempting to stay on Kauai, but she has obligations back in Los Angeles.
Life gets more complicated when circumstances keep putting her close to Leonardo Medici. Not only is he drop-dead gorgeous, he’s a local celebrity. But Kaitlyn can’t shake the feeling he’s hiding something.
Should she believe the rumors that he’s romancing half the island’s single women?
Or is the random sound of wind chimes when he’s close-by a sign that an angel is near and the secret to her happily ever after?

Ethan Stein was born in Buffalo, NY, where he developed a love for writing at an early age. While the beginnings were rather gory and incomplete, it was the start of something important.
In college, Ethan developed a far greater love and understanding of writing, even taking a few courses on how to be a better writer. It was there that he also began to develop the world of Mahrahspand, which was the foundation of his Divine Potentials Series.
His wife and two kids have been very supportive in his quest to further flesh out his fantasy world, and are eager to discover all that he has to offer.

#Review: A GOOD DUKE IS HARD TO FIND by Christina Britton

I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Ms. Britton. I loved that it took place somewhere besides the ballrooms of London. The history of Synne that was teased out throughout the book was captivating. The growing passion between Peter and Lenora was believable and I really liked that it wasn't insta-love like so many authors use. Lenora's father was a cold-hearted cruel man and his actions finally allowed Lenora to break free and decide her own fate. The secondary characters were also enjoyable.
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

#Review: ABOUT A ROGUE by Caroline Linden

Maximilian St. James sees the perfect opportunity to finally become a responsible gentlemen when he agrees to marry Caroline Tate, an heiress to the famous Tate pottery empire. His perfect plan goes awry when Caroline runs away to marry her true love. Her sister Bianca finds herself agreeing to marry Max in her sister's stead after a heated row with her father. Bianca despises Max and though they are married, she does everything she can to stay away from him. It's up to Max to win her over, but is this one challenge he cannot win?
I loved all the lively conversations early on in Max and Bianca's marriage. This was no love match and Bianca reminds Max of that fact every day, but Max is determined to make a go of this business marriage. There was a slow build up of feelings between these two and it was definitely believable, but Max is keeping a terrible secret that threatens to tear this couple apart forever. Will Bianca be willing to forgive Max for his deception? This book had good pacing and I was quickly turning the pages to see how things would work out. There was also a delightful short story at the end about Kit and Jennie.

#Excerpt: BETTING ON SIN by Maria Ann Green

Betting on Sin
Maria Ann Green
Publication date: June 26th 2020
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Greta has been here before. Like, literally. She was just in this Las Vegas penthouse a couple months ago. Back then she was meeting Finn, the handsome bachelor looking for love, on The Lock—the most popular reality dating TV show around. But when she was here last time she was dumped, and went home alone instead of engaged. Life sucks sometimes.
But, other times, that same life has a beautiful way of showing you why it sucked so hard before – so you can appreciate what comes next even more. Because now Greta is the next lucky bachelorette to have thirty or so men worshiping her while she breaks up with them one at a time. It’s weird to be recognized in public, and even weirder to have so many dudes fighting over her. Actually after just a couple days it’s kind of exhausting, especially when she’d rather send all but a couple of them home. Be careful what you wish for, right?
Throughout the whirlwind Greta spends more time with her personal cameraman, Oliver, than she does on Trysts with the guys she’s supposed to be falling in love with. And the more time she spends with Oliver the less she wants to spend with anyone else. Anyone. Even the guys here for her. It gets worse too. The fact that he’s behind the scenes instead of on the big screen…it’s not the only problem. He also has a girlfriend. And that’s a line Greta won’t cross. But she can’t stop wishing she’d met him before all of this craziness.
Will Greta get her head together long enough to focus on following the rules of the show, or will she screw up this second shot at love too?
*Content Warning: sex, alcohol use, and language*
If you like reality dating TV shows, romances with steam and heart, female leads with no time for conflict or bullshit, and redheads, then Betting On Sin might be your next favorite book. It has plenty of awkward moments, friends to lovers, and promises the most dramatic season finale yet. It’ll keep you up way too late, reading just one more chapter all night.Goodreads / Amazon—
EXCERPT:I watch as his eyes widen, and he bites his bottom lip for a moment. And I watch as he sits still. I watch him…not backing away, not stopping me from what we both know I’m doing.
I close my eyes, too scared of the rejection I know is coming.
Call me a coward, I don’t care anymore.
I close my eyes and hover in front of his face, waiting. I want to go the rest of the way; I want to so badly, I can feel the need of it prickling all over. But I don’t. I cant.
Not yet.
Instead, I wait for him to show me somehow, tell me, that this is what he wants too.
His hands find mine then, his fingers moving to intertwine with mine, and he leans forward. It’s just an inch. It’s not the rest of the way to me, doesn’t close the whole distance.
But it’s enough.
It’s enough to show me that we’re in this together. That I haven’t made everything up in my mind. That he wants me too.
So I go for it. I close the last bit of space between us until my lips crash into his. And it’s like…I don’t know how to describe it. It’s like nothing I’ve ever felt before.
Even though it’s only a kiss, nothing else.
But it feels like home.
Like what I’ve been waiting for my whole life.
Like nothing in the universe has been this right.

Author Bio:
Maria lives in Minnesota despite the frozen winters. Actually, she prefers snow drifts and icicles over summer and all that sweat running everywhere. She lives with her husband and little family, which includes a couple lazy cats who make great lap warmers. You can usually find her wishing that she lived in a secret cabin in the woods where she could be a hermit reading and writing all of the time.
Instead she lives the suburban life where she pretends to her neighbors and the other moms around that she doesn't swear like a sailor, have hidden tattoos, and love a good glass bottle of wine. She absolutely believes in unicorns and ghosts and hopes vampires and monsters are real too. She's a coffee-in-the-morning and wine-in-the-evening kind of person, preferably with a nap in between. Maria prefers cats over dogs, books over people, and late nights over early mornings. She probably shouldn't talk to anyone until she's had her first cup of coffee. And if you ever want to hang out with her, you'll have to be game for a horror movie or just a quick run to target for two (hundred) little things. Also, you couldn't pay her to be in her twenties again; Thirties is where it's at. She's a creative, mouthy, introverted, proud bisexual, highly-sensitive INFJ, Slytherpuff, dork with a sweet-tooth.
Maria devours books, reading mostly in bed or listening to audio books in the car. Writing has been one of her passions for pretty much her whole life. So creativity is a necessity for her, always. After working in the mental health field for almost a decade, she's now living her dream as a stay-at-home writer, kiddo wrangler, professional snuggler, and constantly-tired-person. When it comes to her writing, she specializes in dark and twisted thrillers or gritty, angsty contemporary romances. But no matter the genre, she always prefers writing deeply flawed characters with dysfunctional relationships. She's pretty sure the whole "unlikable character" thing is a conspiracy because every character she loves have been labeled this way. Ridiculous. And because of this, she's pretty much found it impossible to write anything without at least a little mayhem.
Maria was once told she painted with her words, and that phrase stuck with her - because writing really is an art, and good stories are true masterpieces. She's always trying to grow and improve in her craft, shooting for a masterpiece of her own someday. And she plans to write forever because writing gives Maria the ability to disappear into new worlds and create people within twisting plots, all from the comfort of her couch. She will always believe that though not every story is for her, and her stories aren't for everyone, every story has a reader.
