But his flirtation is cut short when criminals burst into the bank and shoot her right before his eyes.
In attempt to administer first aid, Brody reveals a tattoo on his back. A mark that will drag him and the girl into the kind of situation he was trying to get away from. Excerpt:I had to be in shock. There was a reason I wasn’t more afraid. There was a reason I wasn’t screaming and fighting to get out of Brody’s arms and away from this god-awful dirty, abandoned, completely creepy gas station. My body wasn’t getting enough blood flow, likely because all the blood was flowing out of me instead of throughout my veins. It was making me sluggish, slowing my response, and in defense, my body wasn’t making adrenaline. So naturally, I felt completely safe in this stranger’s arms.Yeah. That was totally it.It had nothing to do with the fact that he was shirtless, totally ripped, and covered in tattoos that practically screamed sex appeal. It also had nothing to do with the fact he was wearing a backward baseball cap that screamed thuggish behavior. Thuggish behavior was bad. It was very bad.But so very good. The thought caused me to shiver and in reaction to the small movement, Brody pulled me just a little bit closer to his chest. His heat was delicious and I felt my eyes begin to droop. Maybe all I needed was a little nap… just a few minutes to rest my eyes.“Tay,” a nearby voice commanded. “No sleeping.”I grunted in displeasure and forced my eyes back open, looking around the room. If I couldn’t sleep, then I would study my surroundings. The place looked the way one would expect an abandoned gas station to look. It was basically a large box with concrete walls and floors that were once covered in linoleum but now were peeling and dirty. In the center of the room were empty racks that likely used to hold merchandise. The counter at the front of the room was bare and crooked, like part of it was sinking into the floor. Behind it on the wall was a sign that read what I assumed was supposed to say QUICK MART except the Q and U were missing so it read as ICK MART.It was actually very accurate. The windows were all boarded up, with only slivers of sunlight filtering through, leaving ribbons of light across the dusty and trash-littered floor. Off in the corner was a pile of old brown leaves that would likely lie there until they turned to dust. On the far end of the room were several large coolers, the kind that sat on the floor and opened from the top. They were no longer working, no longer white, and frankly I would be terrified to go and see what was inside them.So this is where criminals hung out?The movies made it look so much more glamorous.“Down here,” one of the men called to Brody, and he pivoted around, following after the men who opened up a hidden door in the wall and disappeared. I could hear their boots clomping down a set of stairs and fear clawed its way up the back of my throat.I felt my limbs go rigid. They wanted us to go into a basement?

Interview with James Weaver

What is your most outstanding childhood memory?Probably having no father; he died when I was two. I had two mothers – a mother and a nanny – and I remember being sent away to boarding schools from age eleven on. In effect, all unhappy memories.
In your opinion, what is the most overrated virtue? Why? Always telling the truth, and the expectation to be the all-American boy.
What is the one thing other people always seem to get wrong about you? That they see me as a “troublemaker” with a negative attitude. I only want to expose untruths and misleading comments made by people.
If you could change one thing about the world what would it be?Relative ongoing peace and security for all. This means mini-conflicts will always exist, but no total global annihilations. To be strictly anti-war is too idealistic and impossible to guarantee; so pacifists are purists – a world of purists – would likely prevent anyreconciliations, negotiations, or compromises for peace.
What pet peeve do you have about other people?I dislike dealing with dishonest individuals who live by some ideology as ‘true believers’ in a cause that directs their lives, yet disallows compromises and reconciliations in viewpoints and behavior. I seek out ‘thinking people’ who are open to discussions and possible changes, and are honest about their motivations and intentions.
Is there any occasion when it’s OK to lie?A lie is OK if it stops harm to someone, especially a child or a handicapped person, and it is also OK if it well serves your own self-interests without doing harm to others.
Writing is hard work, do you have a favorite place to recharge?I recharge the writing process by dropping it for a while. I go for a walk, watch TV, read a book, take a nap, or meet with someone.
What do you find most challenging about writing?I find writing a description of something can be difficult; the accurate use of the best words. I often pick up with the last writing done, maybe rewrite it, and add just a new paragraph or more right then and there. Using a thesaurus has been helpful with new and different words and connotations to use.

Are the characters based on people you know? Many characters mentioned in the novel are a derivative of someone I knew in the undergraduate world, but I also had delight in simply fantasizing about characters who were unknown to me in real life.
Shades of Learning is an interesting title, does it hold particular significance? The title has many meanings, but probably most important is that it declares that ways and means of learning are not just one approach, that they are a mixed consolidation of many approaches, including different items to be learned, and most importantly, that learning must come from the individual’s own directed accumulation of information, distilled by that person into knowledge. In other words, knowledge isn’t really taught by the professor, information is doled out. A teacher can impart the knowledge of other thinkers, but the student’s knowledge is only acquired by the student. So, Shades of Learning refers to the content, and variety of methods of learning, and to the layers of subjects to be learned – academic or otherwise.
What is the genre if this book, and the target audience? This is a semi-romantic novel about student-teacher relationships in a women’s college. The main character is immature even as a professor, and this results in many sordid relationships with students as he seeks to impart knowledge to his students, and at the same time, develop personal relationships with them. The audience for this novel are undergraduate and graduate students, professors and other educators, and of course, alumni of higher education schools. Any person who attended college would relate to the layers and tangles of events in this book.
Do you have another book planned?I am working on political conspiracy novel set in Washington DC which involves the “disability and removal” of the President by his Vice-President, who then becomes the acting President under the 1967 25th amendment to the Constitution. It seems this amendment may inadvertently be a legal precedence to enact a regime change in the White House – that is if the Vice -President conspires to declare the president disabled, and remove him from office.

Interview with E.V. Fairfall

Where does the story take place? Transformed takes place in a small mountain town in Colorado. This fictitious town resides next to a forest and is green and lush (Colorado can get very dry), and because of its high elevation, it has strange weather patterns.
How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on the way they sound or the meaning? Do you have any name choosing resources you recommend? Names! Names are so important to me, mostly because I can’t actually write a character without first knowing their name. I can have the perfect scene in my head but until I find a name that I know fits the character, I just can’t write them in. I don’t pick names based on the sounds, but sometimes I pick a name because of its meaning. Mostly I just know when a name works for my character. As for resources, I tend to use lots of baby naming websites.
Who is your favorite character from Transformed and why? Oh gosh, I’m going to say Cricket. I love Chamber of course, but Cricket is just so fun. Cricket is a girl who Thea turned into a squirrel because she needed to borrow her apartment while she was human. Even though Cricket is now a squirrel, she insists on taking special care of the clothes that she reluctantly let Thea borrow—more like take. Thea, who doesn’t understand why Cricket cares about the clothes, tends to leave them wherever she might drop them. Here is a quick excerpt from the book: “'You have a squirrel in your sweater.' Brice cocked his head to the side. 'Actually, I think it’s stealing it.' Thea looked over her shoulder to see the little squirrel dragging the sweater across the floor toward the closet. If Brice saw a squirrel put a sweater on a hanger, she would never hear the end of it. She shook her head toward the squirrel, causing the ball of fur to stop and glare before continuing to drag the sweater out of sight. If Thea didn’t start hanging up the squirrel’s clothes, she had a feeling the little rodent would attempt to kick her out."
Give us some insight into your main character. What does she do that is so special? Thea is God's sister and has spent her life filling the role of Mother Earth, creating the plants and animals and serving as their guardian. Alongside her brother God, the two siblings used their light to create for hundreds of years. She doesn’t understand humans, and she likes them even less. It isn’t until she takes a human form that she begins to understand what she has been missing out on, and ultimately she gains a deeper understanding of her brother and what it means to be a part of a family.
Did you have a specific song or playlist that you listened to when you were writing Transformed?I actually can’t listen to music when I write. I wish I could. Sometimes a song will inspire me or motivate me, but while writing I need quiet. Of course, that never really happens because I live in an apartment with paper thin walls—but that is part of the adventure.
What writing advice do you have for other aspiring authors?Never give up, and go to writers conferences! I wish I had gone to a writers conference earlier. They open your mind to a side of book writing that you normally wouldn't consider. You can meet people who love what you love, and it is a great chance to break out of your shell and read some of your work out loud. Not only that but you will meet other writers who will help you through the hard times.
What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful? Reviews! Social media posts on Facebook, Tumblr, Goodreads and so on. Word of mouth is huge for any author. There are so many great books in the world that people haven't discovered, but they only need to be pointed in the right direction.
Book & Author Details:Transformed by E.V. Fairfall
Publication date: January 1st 2014
Genres: Paranormal, Romance
Synopsis:Since the beginning, two entities have had complete, unquestioned control over Thea: the Earth and God.
But when Thea suddenly figures out that the Earth has trapped her within a forest, she discovers that the only way to set herself free is to break God’s one rule; she must forsake her animal form and become human.
The result is nothing she could ever have expected. Lost within the torrent of human emotions, Thea starts to lose who she is and even begins to fall in love with the one thing she always hated: a hunter.
As her act against God proves more problematic than anticipated, it is only a matter of time before her punishment may prove to be worse than Earth’s entrapment.

Interview with Wade Garret

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?Overall Blurb: Jak Hartlen, 19, the son of William and Mary, will face many thresholds of flesh and mind on his road to reaping the Whirl Wind; seeds of grief and guilt only now coming to fruition. If only they’d know what they were doing... The Gan and their Areht who shape the world behind the scenes will hate him, because he's a threat they're not sure can be chained. The Pillars and their Faithful who spread the world's leading religion will fear him, because his existence, once known, will challenge Ages of dogma and accepted history. The Crimson King and its Servants who seek to return to power, destroying all that remains of The White, will hunt him, because even in death, they're not sure he'll ever bow to the Dark. —They All Should. For as One of Five with the power to shake the world, they will hollow his heart and mind through countless sacrifice and vengeful selfishness. Back Cover Blurb: After a year of laborious solitude and a conflict brought to the doorstep of his father's house, Jak, a Southlander of meek circumstance, will come to accept the future isn't set. Through abilities unnerving to any Areht, against enemies rising in every corner of the planet, he’ll be forced to resolve his destiny as one of five that can change the world. Such selfless transcendence isn’t easy, nor simply the heroic result of dark revelations shielded from him since childhood now exposed; rather, it's because of what’s undeniable, even to him. Like all great forces collected at the tip of the spear, the truth of his purpose and the price of his existence has a cost and there's no getting around paying it
Do you have a favorite character? I have a favorite Main and Secondary Character. My favorite main character, is, of course, Jak—the hero of our story. My favorite secondary character is a two-way tie, though not between Jak’s trusted friends along the way of his epic journey: Palomeer, a guardian of sorts, who remains much in the background and Üllrik, a force-unto-himself, who doesn’t appear till nearly the end of the story—for reasons I can’t explain without giving things away.
Have you ever had a minor character evolve into a major one? Did that change the direction of the novel at all?
It happened all the time. As it should. Outside of Jak, every character is a minor character. The story is about HIM; however, as the plot moves along, people join the hero and thus their story/background expands. The world grows. Now, since mine is an epic world, the blending of Fantasy and Science Fiction, I’ve got tons of room and time—if my will holds—to expand all these characters in ways that flow back and forth through the plot. A common saying in my story is “And the World Turn(s)ed” which is a soft reminder that as the pages in your hand are turning, w/e you’re not reading about, is also moving forward. A great example of a minor becoming a major is the focus of my prologue, which outlines a brief moment before the story and focuses on Mr. Black. I hope everyone checks it out.
Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers? Yes. It felt like forever, though my wife was constantly reminding me it’d only been a handful of months. I quickly gave up on Agents and began reaching out to Publishers directly. A few were interested, some had me on stand-by—email conversations taking weeks at a time—when Black Bed Sheet Books grabbed my attention and without haste made me an offer over a live chat on FB. Second best feeling in the world.
What factors influenced your decision to go with a particular agent or publisher? I’ll be honest. Like every author, you want the best for your book. You want that big deal. You want to be seen everywhere. However, it’s a business and the big guys play rough and despite how much they might like your book, if they can’t sell it FAST to make their ROI—meaning one of a hundred things, not all bad—they’ll pass. We all understand that: Publishers and Agents, for the most part, are about What’s Hot; What’s Selling: What’s now and how much are you like that. I like Black Bed Sheet Books and other small/medium press because, well, I see the passion there. Also, I like breaking new ground and with me, BBS, which did only horror, was reaching out into new territory. I liked that.

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence? I take a hack’n’slash approach to writing. I know the beginning, middle and end, points in-between, then I start writing. I outline here-an-there, but only for a few chapters ahead. When I’m all done, I reread a dozen times, putting things in, taking things out. It’s kinda messy but I feel better about an organic process rather than spending so much time banging outa fully realized outline without making a single keystroke. No, I don’t often listen to music, but at times I do. Mostly I take breaks walking around my house, outside, talking to myself—which is funny when I’m caught doing it.
Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing? I did that long long ago. It was horrible. Not only did it cost a lot $$$, but the editor/book Doctor—makes me mad to this day—wanted me to rewrite it to HER ideas of what my book should be. Then I spent some time shopping it around town to people in-the-know, contacts and such. Finally, the last thing I did was take it to the street. Me and a buddy took my work, a few pages, to a local bookstore (one of the big guys) and started asking people what they liked or didn’t like in books and if their taste fit mine, we showed it to them. Now, both of us said we weren’t the author, that he/she was outside and we were telling them our opinion of the work was that it wasn’t ready for publication and this was our friendly way of trying to get an unbiased read on readers so he/she wouldn’t be hurt by any rejections. However, to our amazement, 9 out of 10 people liked it and a few asked when it would be published, what was the writers name so they could look it up in a year or so. Sometime after that, I did take one more crack at a “professional” evaluation, someone I’d read about, double checked and felt would give me an honest reading. He did and with that confidence, I worked on the few things he mentioned and quickly began pursuing publishing.

What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena? Well, if you don’t have to self-publish, don’t. This is to say, it’s really hard, takes a ton of time and money. Remember, once it’s published, a publisher might not republish it...also, it’s very easy to get lost in the pile of free/cheap books out there. Ok, enough of that cause I don’t want to discourage people from publishing their works, I often thought about giving up on writing for awhile if I didn’t get a publisher. So, to my new authors just striking out, I say this. CAUTION!!!!! Wear a helmet, cause life sucks some times, but in the end, if you’re not writing what you want to write, what only you can write, why are you doing it? Don’t be someone else. You’re far more interesting.

Watch for d4, the story of Teddie’s older sister, in late 2014.
Meet the Author

One night, while digesting this disturbing piece of news, she drank way too many shots of ouzo with her boyfriend. She woke up thirty-one years later demanding to know what was going on. The boyfriend, who she had apparently long since married, asked her to calm down and explained that in a fit of practicality she had gone back to school and gotten a degree in geophysics and had spent the last 28 years interpreting seismic data in the oil industry. The good news, according to Mr. Cronin, was that she had found it at least mildly entertaining and ridiculously well-paying The bad news was that the two of them had still managed to spend almost all of the money.
Apparently she was now Mrs. Cronin, and the further good news was that they had produced three wonderful children whom they loved dearly, even though to be honest that is where a lot of the money had gone. Even better news was that Mr. Cronin turned out to be a warm-hearted, encouraging sort who was happy to see her awake and ready to write. "It's about time," were his exact words.
Sherrie Cronin discovered that over the ensuing decades Sally Ride had already managed to become the first woman in space and apparently had done a fine job of it. No one, however, had written the book that had been in Sherrie's head for decades. The only problem was, the book informed her sternly that it had now grown into a six book series. Sherrie decided that she better start writing it before it got any longer. She's been wide awake ever since, and writing away.

1) Write every day.I believe it was Steven King who first said this, or at least I’m pretty sure that’s where I heard it first anyway. While I do believe this is helpful, I haven’t actually implemented this “rule” to the fullest. My process for writing seems to be shifting lately. I used to write Mon-Fri and then take a break on the weekends for family time and such, but with my last novel (the fourth in the Coldcreek series) I wrote for two weeks straight and knocked it out quick-like. 5,000 words each day. That meant getting up at 5:30 am on Saturday and Sunday for two weeks in order to get that 5k in before my family woke up and our day together began. 2) Write what you know.I have never truly followed this rule. While I do write about some things that I know, I don’t write only what I know. They would be pretty boring books if that were the case. Research is often the best part of my writing process. I learn while I write basically. Sometimes it’s garbage stuff, like how many times a day men think about sex. Which is either every six seconds, fifteen minutes, or nineteen times a day depending on which study you read. Other times it’s more informative and important stuff, like what ingredients you need to make a perfect margarita.
3) Read. This is one I will agree with one hundred percent. Reading is one way you can remain sharp in your genre. You get to see what’s been overdone lately and what hasn’t. I find myself really focusing on the emotions the author creates when I read. I dissect. I like to know what specific words or sentences made me burst into tears or laugh out loud and why. Writing is a craft and learning how to write well is never-ending. Reading will keep you on your toes.

Genres: Contemporary, New Adult
Synopsis:Kind hearted and naive, Paige Jacobs wants what every girl craves…to be loved. She uses this need to make excuses when her current boyfriend goes from being a tad jealous and slightly overprotective to stalker-ish. She isn’t that girl and Craig isn’t one of those guys. Things are fine. Perfectly fine. Until the moment a dark-haired, tattooed hottie with a snarky mouth walks into her life and tells her she deserves better.
Confident and boldly spoken, Cameron Green has always been the guy bad girls can’t get enough of and all the good girls want to tame. He’s lived a lavish lifestyle filled with drugs, women, and alcohol up until his destructive path finally caught up with him. Now Cameron isn’t sure what to do with himself or how to dampen the longing for something more festering inside of him since coming out of his drug-induced haze. But when he meets a doe-eyed girl who gets past his walls like no other, everything about him clicks into place.
Together the two learn there are emotions that hold within them all the power to control you…

Meet the author:I live in a Sussex village near to the Regency towns. Before writing a novel, I visit one of them to soak up the elegance of the architecture, trying to enter the atmosphere of those far-gone times. Whilst walking through narrow cobbled streets, I imagine horse drawn carriages rollicking past, of ladies in Empire fashion, of feathered bonnets and velvet pelisses, of nankeen breeches and starched cravats.
Even today, the same bay fronted shop windows replete with mullioned windows yawn over narrow pavements. The only changes being the wares; an empire dress swapped for a top and miniskirt. Best of all, is stepping down rickety steps into an oak beamed tearoom, with a leaning floor, where log fires crackle in open grates, the air filled with the rich aroma of tansy and cinnamon cakes. Katy has a BA(Hons)Psych, BA Eng.Lit and Creative Writing, MA. Hon Doc. for research into complementary methods of pain control.
