Interview with Julia Kent, SHOPPING FOR A BILLIONAIRE'S FIANCEE

I thought it would be a neat story: what if an average, not-glamorous woman met a billionaire while mystery shopping? And I took it from there.
Shannon comes from this warm, loving -- but slightly whacky -- family. Declan’s family is him, two brothers, and a high-powered, emotionally closed-off father. How on earth do these two relate to each other?Shannon’s drawn to Declan’s composure and he’s drawn to her amazing emotional intelligence. they really do balance each other out. in this new book, Shopping for a Billionaire’s Fiancee, we see a big clash between the two styles, though. In the end, they come to appreciate each other even more (although I think Shannon and Declan could do without the fistfight their fathers get into!).
One of the major topics in this series is deadly bee and wasp allergies. Declan’s mom died from one, his brother is highly allergic, and it turns out Shannon is, too. How does Declan overcome his fear and love Shannon?Because you can’t pick who you fall in love with. Seriously. Declan’s all about being in control and -- poof! Fate made him fall for a woman who has the same deadly allergy his mother had. Fate’s a mean little b*&ch.
You wrote Shopping for a Billionaire’s Fiancee entirely from the man’s point of view. Why?Not quite...there’s a surprise at the end. No spoilers, though! But yes -- 99% of the book is entirely Declan’s point of view. I felt like the Shopping for a Billionaire book -- which was 670 pages -- was entirely Shannon’s viewpoint. We needed to get to know the deeply-composed, calm and rational Declan. Turns out he’s a horndog ;).
Are you writing more Declan and Shannon?Oh, yes! Reader response to these books has been amazing. I’m already working on a book about Shannon’s best friend, Amanda, and Declan’s CEO brother, Andrew. Those two have their own fun to figure out as best man and maid of honor in Shannon and Declan’s wedding! That book is coming sometime in late 2015.

#Excerpt: YEAR OF LIVING BLONDE by Andrea Simonne

A bolt of lightning streaks through her.
Anthony is standing on her front porch. He’s wearing his motorcycle jacket and holding his black helmet at his side. The big bad wolf at her door.
What’s he doing here?
She glances at herself in the hall mirror. No makeup and her hair a mess. Great.
He rings the bell again and she marches over, ready to take the offensive. Ready to tell him to go away. But when Natalie yanks open the door and sees the expression on his face, she hesitates.
“What’s wrong?” she asks finally.
He takes his time with his reply. “I needed to see you tonight.”
“Did something happen?”
“It’s a long story.” He smiles, but there isn’t much humor in it.
She’s never seen Anthony like this before. He never looks anything less than perfect, but there’s strain on his face and around his eyes, and she suspects this is the real man
He takes a step toward her, lowering his voice. “Let me in, Natalie.”
Standing broad-shouldered and solemn in her doorway, he’s an imposing figure, but she isn’t afraid. Despite the fiasco with the bakery, she realizes she still trusts him.
Without a word, she steps out of the way to let him come inside.
The door closes and she walks back into the living room. There’s a sound and she sees that Anthony has dropped his motorcycle helmet on a chair.
“This is a bad idea,” Natalie tells him. “I don’t know why you came here. I shouldn’t even be talking to you.”
“I think you know exactly why I’m here.” His voice is low as it vibrates through the room.
There’s an erotic thrill at his words. “How can I be with you after what happened?”
“Because this isn’t about any of that.” For a moment, his eyes darken with regret, but then turn heated. “Whatever happens next is between you and me.”
Natalie shakes her head, but Anthony moves closer until he’s in right in front of her. She feels his hand on her cheek as the other cradles her head, gently holding her still. “Don’t,” he says, his tone imploring. “Don’t say no. Tell me to stay.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Plain-Jane bakery owner Natalie Anderson has always followed the recipe for a safe life. When her husband dumps her for a seductive older woman, it’s time to throw out that recipe and start from scratch. She cooks up a plan to transform herself from mousy brown to sexy blonde. Meanwhile, she’s trying to expand her Seattle bakery, La Dolce Vita, but runs into an obstacle in the form of her irritatingly handsome landlord.
Astronomer Anthony Novello’s good looks and charm usually guarantees him a free pass with women, though that’s not the case with his new tenant, Natalie. Plain, plump, and persnickety—he’s never met a woman more annoying. But when Anthony returns from a telescope observing run, he makes a discovery of the non-celestial kind. Natalie has changed. He’s amazed to find himself attracted to her. Sparks fly as he tries to convince her there’s more to him than meets the eye.
However, when Natalie’s ex-husband decides to win her back, she’s forced to choose. Is her year of living blonde over? Or is this the start of a new and much sweeter life….~~~~~~~~~~~~~
#Review: REMOTE by Lisa Acerbo
How much would you give up for technology? How much personal freedom is okay to let go of? These are the questions that Lisa Acerbo's REMOTE explores. New State on the outside looks like the perfect paradise to live and grow old in, but what happens when a citizen questions the practice of "hooking up" to the latest technology. Technology that allows you to relive your most sought after fantasies. Do you want to be famous, date a supermodel or be a super soldier? It can all happen in the virtual world and New State citizens are required to hook-up every night, no questions asked.
In the caves not far from New State, a group of people live who do not want to be "hooked up" to technology, who cherish their individuality and their freedom of choice. Yara, is the daughter of one of the leaders and one the best raiders the undergrounders have, but her life is inexplicitly changed when she meets tech-head Josh during a raid.
I thought the premise of the book was good with well-thought out ideas about a society who had complete control over their citizens. It kept my attention throughout. The drone program was inventive, but the romance between Yara and Josh seemed a bit rushed. Within a matter of weeks, their relationship had changed dramatically. War can change people and I think that's what the author was trying to convey. When you live in a life and death situation routinely, you begin to cherish others much more quickly.
YA fantasy/sci-fi fans will enjoy this story although not everything is wrapped up neatly at the end of the book so a sequel is surely coming.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Interview with Katherine Owen, THIS MUCH IS TRUE
This isn’t a sugar-coated love story with a bad boy covered in tattoos and a good girl waiting to be rescued. Um…no. This is an emotional read full of angst about a heroine, who is both selfish and self-destructive, and a hero, who has his own set of baggage preventing him from being there for her when she needs him the most.
Are they destructive? To each other? Yes, at times. Salvable? Most definitely.Redeemable? Absolutely.
This Much Is True was written as a standalone, but readers wanted more so it has become a series. The Truth About Air & Water, Book 2 in the True, Truth In Lies series is available. I’m writing Tell Me Something True, Book 3. Look for its release in mid-2015.
Do you have a favorite character?There’s probably a tie between Tally Landon in This Much Is True and The Truth About Air & Water (Truth In Lies series) Jordan Holloway in my novel, When I See You. These are very complicated characters which made them a challenge to write.
In When I See You, Jordan is capable, prepared, realistic about what happens in life; and she is a survivor. And I like all those things about her.
In This Much Is True, Tally Landon is not quite at Jordan Holloway’s level yet. Granted, Tally is ten years younger. In This Much Is True, Tally is becoming seasoned and tested by fate, but she is resilient; and she will survive. Both characters are wicked smart and somewhat intent on an implicit, self-preservation quest. These two would have to be my favorite characters because, at times, they were hard to love and garner empathy for which challenged me to write in such way to gain empathy and love for them, especially Tally’s character.
Have you ever had a minor character evolve into a major one? Did that change the direction of the novel at all?Yes! This happened in This Much Is True with the character of Rob Thorn. In the early novel drafts, I really liked Rob, but he was eclipsing our hero, Lincoln Presley, far too much, so I had to make Rob more of a bad boy in the final draft of the book, but he became an important character to the storyline.
Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?I did try the route toward traditional publishing. I came close with a few agents with full manuscripts with my debut novel Seeing Julia, which won the Zola Award with the Pacific Northwest Writers Association Literary Contest in 2010. However, self-publishing was beginning to take off, and I was tired of waiting and changing and trying to read into the minds of agents in getting my work out into the world. I like being in control of my own destiny and self-publishing provided that opportunity for me.
If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?I didn’t use a graphic designer. I do all my covers for both the e-book versions as well as the trade paperback versions. I have a background in this from my days in corporate public relations and marketing work.
Do you belong to a critique group? Have they helped improve your writing?I don’t belong to a critique group. I did take classes for a few years with The Writers Studio, which I cannot recommend often enough. At The Writers Studio, we had peer reviews of our work every week as well as the writing teacher’s critique of each assignment. It was a tremendous experience. I really grew as a writer. Now, I have beta readers for some of my novels, but I don’t belong to an organized critique group right now.
What is your writing process? Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
I’m not sure you could ever identify my actual process. I have trouble identifying it.
Sometimes, I outline. More and more I’ve begun to outline; I hate it. I outline. I write. The story changes and evolves. It looks nothing like the outline I started with. I do an Excel spreadsheet to keep my timeline together but everything else about the process of writing a novel somehow fails me. In the end, the book gets done, but I can’t always tell you nor identify my entire process for getting there. Lightning in a bottle is an apt description for the writing process at times. At least, for me.
As far as music? It’s really quiet when I am not into the heart of the book and writing. Then, when I finally get it together, music plays a huge part of my process. I have massive play lists that ultimately represent the book I’m writing.
Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?Yes, I have a line editor that goes through the manuscript for typographical errors and such. I edit as I go so the story is mostly together by the time it reaches a line editor. I do not utilze a development editor at this point in my writing career because I spend a lot of time on plot and structure with my storylines.
What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?Study the market. Follow various writers blogs including JA Konrath’s. His blog posts helped me in terms of making my decision to self-publish.
Don’t be naïve in thinking you have to hire everything out; you don’t. Take classes at Lynda.com if you need to learn a software program such as In Design or Photoshop.
Take writing classes. I recommend The Writers Studio. You will up your game and challenge your craft with writing classes.
Read a lot within your genre and out of it. Reading other writers’ work will improve yours.
Believe in your work, take critique, and plan for it. Readers will tell you the most about your work, good or bad.
Maintain humility about yourself and your work and you will be mostly fine.
This is a lonely profession. Accept it and balance that out, which means participating in the world occasionally. It will feed your stories as well as your soul.
Besides writing, do you have any other passions?I cook about twice a year usually at Thanksgiving and Christmas. My family appreciates those efforts and laments the time before I was writing full-time when I used to cook more often. Don’t get me started on cleaning.
Other passions include watching movies from action films like Alien, Divergent, and The Hunger Games to romantic films like Silver Linings Playbook, The Vow, Love & Other Drugs, and Crazy, Stupid Love. Now, you know my favorites.
What’s next for you?I released the second book in the Truth In Lies series, The Truth About Air & Water, in late August 2014. The enthusiasm for more of Linc and Tally has me writing a third book about these two called Tell Me Something True. It should be out prior to Summer 2015. I’m also working on another novel, Saving Valentines,which I hope to release in the Fall of 2015. Writing, I’m always writing.
Thanks for having me on your lovely blog and asking such thought-provoking questions.
Best,Katherine Owen
About Owen's fiction...This is NOT the light trope stuff. She travels a unique, writerly path and enjoys writing dark and angsty (a "non-word" she is fond of) emotional love stories. She often warns readers to be prepared with: time, tissues, wine, Advil or your drug of choice. And, as her most favored character, Lincoln Presley, would say, "do what you must, Princess."
#Review: CONFESSIONS OF A ROYAL BRIDEGROOM by Vanessa Kelly
"Confessions of a Royal Bridegroom" is another winner from author Vanessa Kelly. Griffin Steele is a shrewd and savvy business man with a reputation to match. Being the illegitimate son of the Duke of Cumberland has hardened Griffin in ways that no one would understand. No one dares threaten Griffin or those in his employ. When he is forced to take in a abandoned infant by spy master Dominic Hunter, Griffin balks. Dominic has a plan and brings his goddaughter Justine Brightmore to care for the child.
From the moment these two meet, there are sparks flying and not in a good way. Griffin does not welcome strangers into his household and Justine is appalled that she is forced to live next door to Griffin's brothel. This story draws the reader in with intrigue, danger, secrets and a romance that builds slowly throughout the book. Can Griffin learn to trust the prim and proper Justine and can Justine look past Griffin's reputation to find the generous and loving man that he shields from the world? The story is filled with twists and turns that keeps the reader engaged to the final pages. Recommended.
Interview with William A. Gordon, 1001 TIPS FOR WRITERS
I am also coming out with an updated e-book version of what many consider to be the definitive book on the killings at my alma mater: Four Dead in Ohio: Was There a Conspiracy at Kent State? The new edition explores recent new developments, including two audio forensics experts’ claims that a “prepare to fire” order was issued seconds before the shootings.
How long before you got your offer of representation/your first contract? I had contingency plans for the Kent State book back in 1973, and began working on it in earnest in 1975. So it took me 17 or 15 years between the time I got started and the book was first published.
On the other hand, I whipped out my Ultimate Hollywood Tour Book in just six months.
What factors influenced your decision to self-publish your book(s)?I self-published The Ultimate Hollywood Tour Book because my agent at the time could not find any New York publishers that were interested. That turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I am now on my 25th printing and my 23rd year of publication. I bought back the rights to Four Dead in Ohiojust to keep it in print. I actually sold more books than my original publisher.
Do you belong to a critique group? Have they helped improve your writing?No, I do not believe in critique groups. Too often they are like the blind leading the blind.
Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?Absolutely. Every author needs an editor. Those who think they can get away without one are not thinking professionally.
What have you’ve learned during your self-publishing journey?I discovered that I really liked the book business and loved publishing more than I liked writing. I learned how to run a small business—which is what self-publishing is—and I learned from all the rookie mistakes I made. I also learned a lot from the self-publishing gurus: how they have a vested interest in getting people to try self-publishing; how they are encouraging so many unnecessary books; and how they earn their livings not through their books but through speaking engagements, workshops, consulting, and other ancillary services.
What kinds of marketing [twitter, facebook, blog, forums] are you involved with for promoting your book(s)?I create master publicity lists even before the book is published: lists of print outlets that might review my books; and a list of radio and TV shows throughout the country that might interview me. I even have a side business selling a database of radio talk shows, which I began after Citadel neglected to send review copies of my movie location book, Shot on This Site, to radio and TV stations. I wound up doing all the work myself and kept researching radio stations until I reached the point where I began to market the list to other publishers, publicists, and independent authors. I am on Facebook and Linked In and will soon join Pinterest. Facebook does not seem to be all that effective for me. The only reviews I got on GoodReads were from unqualified reviewers: people who thought reference books should read like novels or who were so ignorant about writing they did not understand the difference between a byline and a subtitle or the difference between an author and an editor. I have also used Net Galley and participated in various writing forums.
Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?I am still juggling three different books!
What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?Learn everything you can about the book business. Have realistic expectations.Work with people who have a strong background in traditional publishing, as opposed to self-publishing. Your goal is to transcend the self-publishing ghetto. Publish only if you have a really good reason to. Too many people are being encouraged to publish when they really have nothing to say.Remember that you are asking people to spend their hard earned money. You are writing FOR someone and not just to please yourself. Being an author does not mean what it used to mean. It used to mean something special. It is not special any more.
Some fun facts about you, which do you prefer – dogs or cats? Chocolate or vanilla? Coffee or Tea? Talk or Text? Day or Night?Fun fact: I was born during the blizzard of 1950. They had to call out the Ohio National Guard to take my mother to the hospital. That has nothing to do with why I wrote the Kent State book. I just thought that was a good anecdote to use on talk shows.
Now the deepest truths of the past and the darkest predictions for the future survive only in the verses of nursery rhymes.For over a thousand years, some of Lardan’s fractious provinces have been biding their time.
Kyali Corwynall is the daughter of the Lord General, a child of one of the royal Houses, and the court’s only sword-wielding girl. She has known for all of her sixteen years what the future holds for her–politics and duty, the management of a House, and protecting her best friend, the princess and presumed heir to the throne. But one day an old nursery rhyme begins to come true, an ancient magic wakes, and the future changes for everyone. In the space of a single night her entire life unravels into violence and chaos. Now Kyali must find a way to master the magic her people have left behind, or watch her world–and her closest friends–fall to a war older than the kingdom itself.
