#Review: RESTLESS IN PINK by Lynne Connolly

Even though I haven't read any of the first 3 books in the series, it did not take away the enjoyment of reading "Restless in Pink." Perhaps I would have understood the characters and family relations better, but the book mostly centered around Claudia Shaw, the wild child, of the family know as the "Emperors." Dominic St. Just is adjusting to life after leaving the army although he’s still doing some clandestine activities for the Crown. If Dominic thought he'd met his match on the battlefield, he was sorely mistaken when he meets Claudia. When the woman wants something, there is no stopping her.
Ms. Connolly does a superb job of fleshing out both Caroline and Dominic and their attraction to one another. I especially loved how independent and fearless Caroline is. Throw in intrigue, betrayal and personal attacks and the unsettling English times come to life. The history lesson surrounding the Young Pretender was presented without a heavy hand as she kept Caroline and Dominic central to the story. My only slight criticism besides a few typos was there there were a lot of minor characters to keep straight. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and look forward to reading the other books in the series. Recommended.

A loud crash and the shattering of glass thundered through the room. Elise wrapped her arms around Dimitri's waist and pressed herself to him. Her shoulders tensed.

His footsteps rang in his ears as he dashed through the hallway, entering the museum through the back, then ran into the main display room. Two men dressed in black with ski masks over their faces looked up at him. Dark shadows from the outside street lamp filled the main room.
"Stop!" Dimitri yelled in Russian, letting his eyes get used to the low light.
They froze, caught off guard by Dimitri's voice.

Interview with Celeste Grande, LIVE ME

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series? Live Me is a new adult contemporary romance that takes you through the life of Evangelina Ricci. Evangelina is a girl who leaves the town she grew up in with her best friend in order to escape the dark past that plagues her. Evangelina is very guarded and closed off, although she puts on a façade to the world to make them think otherwise. Once at college, she meets Blake Turner, the guy who will blow her world wide open and demolish the make-shift walls she’s kept so perfectly in place all these years. Live Me is part of the Pieces of Broken series. 
What factors influenced your decision to self-publish your book(s)?Two things. 1- I’m a major control freak. I don’t take orders well and I’m very opinionated, especially when it comes to something I’ve created. 2- I don’t like to wait. Querying and getting accepted takes an awful lot of time and it took me three years to get Live Me to the point that I was comfortable publishing as it is. I didn’t want to wait any longer.
If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover? I was completely hands on in the full design of the cover, down to the models. I wanted a good representation of Eva and Blake. It was also important to me that it was eye catching and that even the back cover had pieces of the novel.
Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you? I have a general idea where the story is going, but characters are pushy f*ckers sometimes and think they should have a say. They tend to take things where THEY think it should go. And that’s okay. Because it IS of course their story to tell. I am merely a moving pen. Yes, pen. I hand write my books.
Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing? Yes, two of them. And a proofer. I’m paranoid. And anal. If you only knew how many times this book has been worked over…
What have you’ve learned during your self-publishing journey? The struggle is real. You can have amazing words and amazing characters, but the market is rough to crack. However, it’s a community like no other. People genuinely care and want to help. It’s the most passionate place to be and I’m proud and humbled to be a part of it.
Besides Amazon, are there any other sites where your books are for sale? So far, Barnes and Noble and Kobo. iBooks is coming, but I need a hand with that one, so keep your eye out. Google + is toying with me and telling me they aren’t accepting any more. (Are they for real?)
Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book? At the present moment, this is my greatest struggle. Live Me just released and already the second book in the series is in high demand. So, I need to find ways to split myself to make it all work.
Some fun facts about you, which do you prefer – dogs or cats? Chocolate or vanilla? Coffee or Tea? Talk or Text? Day or Night? Dogs, always dogs. Cats freak me out. I feel like they’re smarter than me and planning my demise. If you put an IV in me, you may find chocolate running through my veins. And coffee, preferably pumpkin flavored. I used to talk on the phone all day long, now I ignore it half the time and don’t listen to my voicemails. Text me, please. Day, although I’m a vampire as of late. (God, I wish I was for real)
What’s next for you? I would like to tie up Eva and Blake’s story as quickly as possible. There is a possibility of a third installment if I can make it work, which will be featured in Blake’s POV. I also see a story for Eva’s sister, Abby, and I would LOVE to give Jace a book if I could figure out how to master writing m/m. There are so many things floating through my head that I have to hope to have the time to get them all out. You’ll have to just follow me and stay tuned. XO

She ran off, escaping into the crowd before he could stop her, but his parting words fell like a shroud on her shoulders, dimming her elation.
“You are no warrior. You are but a maid in boy’s clothing. And nothing more.”

#Excerpt: OBSIDIAN WORLDS by Jason Werbeloff

Excerpt:
(from The Cryo Killer):
“Inesa and Paul, good to meet you. Who referred you?”
“Mr. Camfrey’s wife.”
Paul’s hands are working. Picking at each other. At the cuticles.
“Ah yes, I was sorry to hear about his passing.”
“I think,” she lowers her voice, “that it was professionally done. Heart attack, I hear.”
I lean forward. “You’d like a similar package, ma’am?”
Paul speaks up for the first time. “Is it quick?”
If I had a penny for every time a client asked me that question. “Painless,” I say, “or your money back.”
Paul harrumphs.
“Excellent,” says Inesa, beaming. “You’ve been doing this a while?”
“Best in the business,” says Janet, striding over to us. She places a hand on my shoulder. “You’re safe with Barker.”
“So, you’re wanting the double package?”
Inesa squeezes her husband’s arm. Every carat on her ring finger catches the sunlight. His nod is miniscule.
“Yes,” she replies after a moment.
“Those are difficult.” I lean back in my chair, weighing the ring out of the corner of my eye. “Coroner looks closely at doubles. Need a plausible cause of death. Right now all I have in stock are gas leaks and home invasions. Invasions can get messy – brings down the property value. I suggest the gas leak. Although …” I glance at Paul. “Home invasions are on the rise.”
Paul scratches the skin over his knuckles. His lips have taken on a bluish tinge. I’ve seen all manner of manners displayed in the chairs on the other side of my desk. Clients respond to their impending deaths in all sorts of ways. Paul’s reaction isn’t unique.
“Gas leak,” says Inesa definitively.
Paul nods, a quick jerk up and down. “When’ll it happen?” He can’t meet my gaze.
“I could probably fit you in next week. Any preferences?”
“I’m writing an exam on Tuesday,” says Inesa. She looks to Paul, “And I’m sure you’d like to finalize that merger?”
He groans.
“Late next week?” she asks.
“Let’s see … Janet, check my availability, please.”
“Could do Friday next.”
“Excellent,” says Inesa.
“But …” Paul is fading to a paler blue by the minute. Droplets dot his forehead. “I just can’t live with the thought of this hanging over me for the next ten days. I just …” He swallows. “I just can’t.”
I reach out a hand and touch the man’s shoulder. His golf shirt is saturated. “Not to worry, sir. A memory wipe is included. You’ll never know you were here.” I offer him my warmest smile. Janet calls it the Big Daddy. “In fact, you may’ve been here before, and you wouldn’t know.”
Paul eyeballs me. “Have we been here before?”
“I couldn’t tell you.” I wink.
