Excerpt:
He fingered a tendril of auburn hair that had escaped her ponytail and fallen across her cheek. “Your expressions are as changeable as the clouds. What were you just thinking?”
He was close enough now for her to feel the heat from his body, and the forest stilled. Her being filled with a fevered waiting.
A woman laughed, her voice a raucous cawing, and Riga blinked. A party of hikers tramped along the trail beneath them. Someone below made a joke about mountain lions.
Riga relaxed onto her elbow. “I was thinking about an old movie called The Bishop’s Wife – the original version with David Niven and Cary Grant and Loretta Young.”
“Good movie,” he said. “It had a wine bottle that magically refilled itself. Port, I think. A bit sweet for my tastes, but this port was –” He stopped at Riga’s look. “What?”
Nonplussed, she stared. “You’ve just… taken my conversational thread in a completely different direction.”
“Sorry. You wanted to say something else about the movie?”
“Forget it.”
“No really, go on.”
“No.” Riga struggled not to laugh. “I don’t want to anymore.”
He sighed. “Okay. Let’s pretend I didn’t say anything about the wine bottle, even though it is the best part of the movie. You said you were thinking of The Bishop’s Wife. And I said, ‘really?’”
“Okay. What I was thinking was how sad it was that when the angel left, nobody remembered he’d ever been there and caused all those miracles to happen in their lives. They thought they’d just done it on their own.”
Donovan nodded. “I don’t think it mattered that the characters didn’t remember him. Their lives had been changed. Perhaps it was best they thought that they’d done it themselves.”
“I suppose,” Riga said, unconvinced. “But the movie was true in one sense – that’s the nature of the metaphysical experience. You can’t hold onto the experience. It comes and goes in a flash. You understand deep in your soul that something marvelous has happened, but you’ll never be able to prove or explain it.”

#Review: CURLED UP WITH THE EARL by Amy Rose Bennett

Crown spy, William Lockhart, the Earl of Kyle, is pretending to be a groom to gather evidence in an ongoing murder mystery. Little did he realize that the lovely Lucy Bertram would be such a distraction to the investigation. Will is investigating her father because of his expertise in poisons, but he's surprised to find that Lucy is also an expert in plant poisons. Can the shy beauty be an unwitting pawn in her father's scheme, or is there another villain Will has yet to uncover?
This was an enjoyable story, although the romance between Will and Lucy was more of an insta-love story. I would have liked the attraction phase to last a little longer before the passionate kissing. The plot moves along at a good pace, although I knew who the villain was early on. There were numerous twists and turns before Will and Lucy get their HEA.
I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy, and all opinions are my own.

Interview with Marguerite Ashton, BLINDSIDED
Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
Yes. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to post on your blog.
BlindSided is about Lexi Archer. She’s eighteen, and her entire world is in a tailspin. When we first meet Lexi, she wakes up in a hospital bed, handcuffed to the rail, and realizes she doesn't remember the events from the previous night. Once she’s released from the hospital, Lexi's transferred to the Milwaukee County Jail, where she's informed about her pending charges for first-degree murder.
Of course, she’s in shock, and throughout the story, we see Lexi trying to cope with her mental health diagnosis while trying to figure out what happened.
This book is the first in The Forgotten Daughter series. All books in this series will focus on mental health.
Do you have a favorite character?
Yes. I try not to have a favorite character in any book I write, but with all ten titles, I have not succeeded.
My favorite one for BlindSided is Jackson- Lexi’s father. He has been stuck in an ongoing nightmare for years while trying to do his part as a dad to Lexi. After an incident involving his daughter, he’s forced to put aside his “victim card feelings” and do everything in his power to try and protect her.
Have you ever had a minor character evolve into a major one? Did that change the direction of the novel at all?
Yes. It was in one of my crime fiction novels, Promised Lies. The character who started out as a minor in my outline turned into a major character. But he didn’t overshadow my protagonist. Instead, the character worked in tandem, making the story even more powerful.
Powerful enough to keep him in the second novel.
What factors influenced your decision to self-publish your book(s)?
One of the factors that influenced my decision to self-publish was wanting to keep writing at a pace that would allow me to write and share my stories. As a writer, all I do is think. Scenarios, what would be the end result if this happened? I had so many stories to get out of my head that I learned quickly that the best way to process an idea was to keep a notebook with me just in case.
I was afraid that if I didn’t write down the idea or a scene, I would lose my chance to try and create a story. Have I had ideas that were totally lame? Absolutely. I’d push it to the side and put it in the “maybe later” pile.
So, I went through the process of creating my own business, Criminal Lines Media LLC.
What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
My writing process-it depends on the story. It depends on my writing mood. Am I in the constant writer flow with the words I need at the ready being typed onto the page? Or am I going to work harder (I always set a four-hour time block to write), sitting at my desk, and staring at my laptop? Hoping to complete a chapter.
I must have space, quiet, or a movie which depends on my writing mood. A door to close, allowing me to shut out all the noises going on in my home. Thank goodness for my husband. We work in shifts. The above is my process for writing my first draft.
For edits, classical music is what I listen to stay focused on any manuscript.
Besides Amazon, are there any other sites where your books are for sale?
Yes. I have some of my books on Barnes and Noble and Apple Books.
What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?
The advice I’d give new authors deciding to self-publish is to write and keep on writing if you’re in it for the long haul. Working with a writing mentor, editor, and an experienced cover artist with a portfolio is a good start. That is what worked for me. From one author to another, I encourage you to find what works for you.
Take the time with your book. Have someone else read your book to help catch mistakes. Having a second or third pair of eyes reading your manuscript helps. Will we catch every mistake before the first print? Not likely. But after you’ve had time away from the book you worked so hard to write, go back and read the one for sale. Use this as an opportunity to see what you have missed.
The pressure that was there prior to publishing is no longer an issue. However, if you can take that time with a reading buddy and if there are any mistakes, update your published book file if you’re up for it.
The best thing ever for us writers is to hope that we catch everything we need during rewrites. Keep on, keeping on!
Besides writing, do you have any other passions?
I love building dollhouses!
Some fun facts about you, which do you prefer – dogs or cats? Chocolate or vanilla? Coffee or Tea? Talk or Text? Day or Night?
The fun facts about me are I have my fur baby, an old English bulldog named Pepper. I love vanilla with hot fudge. Decaffeinated tea while I continue to enjoy being a night owl!
What’s next for you?
I’m focused on my upcoming new releases for 2023. Also looking forward to taking a few days off to finish my latest dollhouse kit.

But as the chemistry builds, a figure from Olivia’s past unexpectedly pops back into her life and the couple realizes they have more in common than they thought. Are these star-crossed lovers doomed to repeat their parents’ mistakes, or can they build a life together once the final set is played?
This book is a standalone, steamy, new adult/college, sports romance, 77k words. Tropes include enemies to lovers, he falls first, and billionaire.
Excerpt:
Olivia stopped abruptly and I nearly slammed into her chest as she swiveled to face me.
“I don’t get it,” she said. “Last night, you couldn’t have been less interested. And now you’re threatening to stalk me?”
I hadn’t expected that. “Not interested? I am the picture of interested when it comes to you. You just caught me off guard last night. I’m used to this—to you hating me. So when you suddenly seemed to be coming on to me, I just wanted to make sure it was for real and that you weren’t being forced to seduce me by some brilliant terrorist. Despite what you think about all of us guys, consent still matters to most of us.”
Her eyebrows furrowed together as she tried to piece together everything I’d just said. “I don’t hate you.”
“You’ve literally told me you hate me at least a dozen times.”
She rolled her eyes. “Well, I don’t. You’re annoying and arrogant and entitled and demanding and self-absorbed and—”
“Olivia,” I interrupted. “You started to tell me that you don’t hate me, but all of these words suggest otherwise.”
That earned me a half smile.
“You frustrate me. But I think I could see us being friends. Except…”
“Except you want to jump my bones every time you see me?”
She scowled.

#Excerpt: TITANIAN WARRIOR by Victoria Saccenti

One woman holds the key to his destiny—and his people’s salvation. Hagen drags himself to the gates of Hell, body and soul shredded by the bloodlust that consumes all the unmated of his kind. Awaiting the painful atonement that will buy him ten more years to find his eternal mate—or face oblivion. But Hades himself kicks him out with the bloodlust still prowling, unsatisfied, in his veins.
Bargained away by her parents to Master O, a mysterious, cruel wizard, Faiza serves in his household, keeping her small magic a secret, plagued by wild, confusing visions of a strange, suffering man. Then the master brings home a wounded Titanian warrior whose touch sends ice, fire, and desire racing through her body.
When she learns Master O plans to use Hagen as a weapon to conquer all races, she devises a desperate plan to free him—a plan that opens a portal to a world she’s never known. And a destiny entwined with danger that could destroy them all.
Excerpt:
Faiza hopped to her feet. She joined the trio outside, pretending she didn’t notice Hagen’s hawkish stare. That was foolish, impossible to do, and insensitive to him. He’d done nothing except protect her. His thorough gaze burned wherever it fell on her, and his scent enfolded her like a mantle. She stopped resisting, glanced into his sad face, and her heart broke in pieces.
“What’s wrong?” she whispered.
Grasping her hand, he pressed her fingertips to his lips as if this would be their last time together. She’d seen this gesture before and had been moved to the core. Now she was the recipient and had no words. Hagen dropped her hand and turned away. Separation anxiety was instantaneous. The distance was short, yet his absence was unbearable. Faiza felt more alone than she ever had in her life. She couldn’t handle the emptiness and sense of loss.
Following her heart’s desire, she bolted after him. “Hagen, wait.”
He paused at the end of the hallway. “Sweetheart?”
His murmur was gentle, his expression was hopeful, and she crashed into the comforting strength of his chest. Lacing her arms around his waist, she held on as tightly as she could. His essence surrounded her, and the world was perfect again. She was complete.
“I don’t understand what I’m feeling or what’s happening. Please, don’t go.”
“We’re at the inevitable crossroads,” Hagen said. “The universe has ordained you choose. Freely. With no pressure. Our future depends on it. Know this, no matter which way you go, I’ll always be close by. I’m yours to keep, little Faiza. That’s my vow. Till the end of my days.” When he pushed her back, his sparkling gaze mesmerized her. “Before you decide, you need information. Maya and Talaith will answer all your questions. If at the end you still have doubts, come to me and I’ll answer from my perspective. All right?”
“Okay.”
He kissed her forehead, then gently turned her around. “Go. They’re waiting for you.”

Reviewers Comments:
5.0 out of 5 stars An exceptional epic fantasy!
Stone’s Curse is an epic fantasy I couldn’t put down. From the very first page until I reached the end, I was caught up in the story. I connected with the characters, especially Jeda and his twin daughters. I also connected with the desert warriors. The world-building is second to none and truly makes Stone’s Curse an exceptional read. The authors work very hard to create this world and yet, it comes across effortlessly while reading. Even though this is pure fantasy, it felt totally believable. The descriptive narration also makes Stone’s Curse an unputdownable read. Every nuance, every detail, every magical element is poignantly described. These authors are a brother-sister writing duo who are experts in writing unforgettable fantasy books. If you consider yourself a fantasy reader, you need to read this book. Highly recommend!
5.0 out of 5 stars another great Witch Stone episode
Much less frenetic pace than previous, good solid writing, entertaining and enjoyable.

#Review: THE DUKE GETS EVEN by Joanna Shop

This is the first book I've read in the series, and I might have gotten more out of it if I had read the previous books. Even so, the story was delightful on its own. I loved the opening scene in the ocean. That was different from anything else I've read in the genre. It was well done and set up the story perfectly. I adored Nellie, the headstrong, rebellious young socialite who advocates for women's empowerment even if it puts her life in danger with the law. She never backs down from a challenge, not even when she finds the handsome man from her ocean swim is none other than the boring and predictable Andrew, the Duke of Lockwood.
Lockwood was groomed from birth to be a duke and to act ducal at all times. He's tired of always being polite and just wants to break free of all his responsibilities trying to rescue his bankrupt duchy. He thinks he wants a malleable heiress whose dowry will save the duchy, that is, until he meets Nellie. Throwing caution to the wind, Lockwood sets out on a course to make the gorgeous heiress his own except Nellie has other ideas. Can these two reconcile their different paths in love and live happily ever after, or are their difference too much to overcome?
I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

#Review: HER LESSONS IN PERSUASION by Megan Frampton

Barrister Bram Townsend likes order in his life. He has his friends, their book club and his work. He doesn't need or want anything else. All of that neatness is turned upside down when he tries to save a lady from jumping off a bridge. Except, she wasn't planning on jumping; she was just star gazing. Lady Wilheminia Bettesford is an amateur astronomer and merely wanted to get closer to the sky when she's rudely pulled off the bridge railing. She's furious and lets Bram know she doesn't need or want his help, but she can't resist stealing a kiss from the tall, imposing man. Can two people who are adamantly opposed to marriage resist their mutual attraction, or will they go their separate ways forever wondering if they missed out on true love?
This was a delightful story. Not only did I love the banter between Bram and Wilheminia, but Bram's friends were so entertaining. Bram was so honorable, and he just wanted to make Wilheminia happy. He wanted her to be able to make her own choices about her life without any undue pressure from him or her family. The plot moves along nicely with a few slow parts. There were quite a few twists and turns in the story before these two were able to admit their love for each other. I can't wait to read the next book in the series and am looking forward to knowing more about Bram's orphan brothers.
I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

#Review: ONE DUKE DOWN by Anna Bennett

Andrew Keane, the Duke of Hawking, doesn't remember how he ended up tangled in a fishing net in the bay, but even though he's fuzzy because of a head wound, he knows beauty and kindness when he sees it. Miss Poppy Summers works hard for her family's fishing business, and when she finds an unconscious man in her fishing net, she's stunned not only by his masculine beauty but why he ended up in the bay in the first place. Poppy agrees to help Hawking regain his memory, although she thinks he's delusional when he tells her he's the Duke of Hawking. She thinks the blow to his head has rattled his brain. Can these two work together to unravel the mystery of who attacked him, or will they succumb to the growing attraction between them?
This was a cute story about two people in love overcoming a number of obstacles standing in their way to true happiness. The plot moves along well as they try to unravel the mystery of Hawking's attack. Along the way, secrets are revealed, and friendships are broken. There are a number of twists and turns in the story that keeps the story moving forward. I loved Poppy's feistiness and Hawking's drive to convince Poppy that they could make a life together. There are enough clues to guess who the villain is, but the full extent of his reasoning is slowly revealed. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and look forward to Kitty's story next.
I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

Interview with Zoe Rosi, PRETTY EVIL

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
My latest book is Pretty Evil. It’s a novel about a ‘MeToo serial killer’ called Camilla Black. Camilla is a vigilante murderer of bad men – rapists, abusers, paedophiles and creeps. She’s a fashion magazine editor by day and killer by night. I describe the book as ‘The Devil Wears Prada meets American Psycho.’
Do you have a favorite character?
Yes, I adore Camilla. She is a very out-there character. She’s bold and has quite an edgy personality. I’m really proud of her as I think she’s a unique creation. It was important to me that her story and her motivations as a serial killer were believable. This involved doing a lot of research into psychopathy and forensics, which was dark and disturbing at times, but worth it to create Camilla.
Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?
Yes. I have self-published and been traditionally published. Prior to writing thrillers, I wrote romantic comedies. I had four romantic comedies published with a top 5 publisher and self-published two. I then got an agent who helped me land a two-book deal with a traditional publisher for my thrillers.
How long before you got your offer of representation/your first contract? Was it for your first novel?
About two weeks! We went on submission with my novel, Pretty Evil, which had been published a year earlier by an indie press as Predator. I’d managed to get my rights back, which was fortunate, and as a result of the book having been published before, it was very polished. I think this helped me gain a deal quickly. My agent sent the manuscript to Thomas & Mercer, who were our first choice of publisher and they offered us a deal.
What factors influenced your decision to go with a particular agent or publisher?
When I was querying, I had a lot of agents compliment my writing style and hook, but they often then went on to say that my Pretty Evil was ‘too violent’, ‘too dark’ and ‘too graphic’. This frustrated me as I didn’t see that as a bad thing. American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis is incredibly violent, graphic and dark, and yet it’s an iconic book that has sold millions of copies. Like American Psycho, my novel is told in first person from the perspective of an extremely twisted serial killer. Of course, it is going to be dark, graphic and violent. If it was anything else, it would be inauthentic. I realized I had to find an agent who understood this and didn’t want me to soften my novel. I was not willing to turn my character, Camilla, into something she was not in order to pander to risk-averse people. I was going to stick to my guns.
I could tell when I first spoke to my agent, Rukhsana, that she loved Pretty Evil exactly as it was and truly appreciated its dark nature. Rukhsana had no interest in changing or softening my book and believed in it as it was. This is how I knew she was the right agent.
Thomas & Mercer also had a similar approach to Pretty Evil, appreciating it as it was, rather than wanting to tone it down. This is a key reason why I signed with them.
If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?
I was keen for my cover to feature a woman’s lips as I liked the idea that readers could pose with the cover over their own face. I thought this would be fun and good for marketing. The final cover of my book is sultrier and darker than I’d imagined it would be, but I really like it.
Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
I outline. I really enjoy outlining and I like to know where my story is heading. I can’t imagine writing a novel without some kind of roadmap. Naturally, new threads and ideas arise as I write so the final story is usually somewhat different to the original outline.
Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?
No, I don’t personally hire editors for my books. Even when I self-published romantic comedies, I edited them myself. I know this isn’t recommended, but I’ve been working in copywriting, proofreading, journalism and publishing for a long time now so I felt I could self-edit.
What have you’ve learned during your self-publishing journey?
For me, this only applies to my self-published rom coms, but I learnt that a good cover and blurb is essential as no matter how good your book is, if these aren’t on point, readers won’t buy it. I also think it’s important to not only be able to write books but to have the time and energy to learn about advertising. If you’re not interested in learning about this, it’s probably better to go down the traditional publishing route.
Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?
Yes, this can be quite challenging. I think it’s important to pace yourself and find balance. If you’re not careful, writing and marketing can take over your life. I’ve certainly overdone it at times and this is something I’m now mindful of.
What’s next for you?
My novel, Pretty Evil, has been optioned for TV and is being adapted by a screenwriter. This is incredibly exciting. Seeing my character, Camilla, on screen would be a dream come true! I’m also working on several new thrillers, which I hope will be published soon.

Blurb:
You’ve done a bad thing. She has you in her sights. Now you’re going to pay.
Meet Camilla Black: an affluent, respected, influential fashion magazine editor, who lives it up in her beautiful Mayfair apartment. But Camilla’s glamorous life is a lie. Behind her poised exterior beats the cold dark heart of a vigilante killer, a murderer hell-bent on wreaking vengeance upon bad men.
Camilla expects to get away with murder. She’s careful. And anyway, it’s worth the risk. She’s making the world a better place with each predator she kills. But when one of her victims’ bodies is unexpectedly found, his gruesome death is splashed all over the papers.
To make matters worse, she’s now being pursued by Detective Wheelan, a new addition to the Met with laser-sharp focus and a worrying habit of solving impossible crimes…
She knows she should stop, but she can’t. Some men just deserve to die. Will Camilla’s insatiable appetite for justice be her downfall, or can she outsmart the police?
Revised edition: Previously published as Predator, this edition of Pretty Evil includes editorial revisions.
