Out of My Comfort Zone

So I had an uncomfortable talk with my publicist the other day. You know, about THAT topic.
Twitter.
Sigh. Do I really have to?
She gently encouraged me to give it a try but, honestly, I've never been good at foreign languages and that is what Twitter seems like to me. Then Greg Pincus posted a note about an upcoming chat about apps and ebooks at #kidlitchat. These are two topics I do feel I should know more about. Double sigh. But, as if he could read my mind, Greg then posted a link to Debbie Ridpath Ohi's explanation of Twitter chats.
My publicist would be proud of me -- I'm working through Debbie's informative and helpful posts and maybe -- just maybe -- I'll get what tweeting is all about.

Wish Me Luck
Ever since seeing Julie and Julia* in the theater last year, I have been dying to make Julia Child's Boeuf Bourguignon. What better time to undertake this labor of love than in honor of the holiday of love?
Come tomorrow night, I will be blanching bacon, sauteing beef and pouring wine. . .some of the latter might even make it into the dinner!
More butter, s'il vous plait!
*when we came out of the theater, daughter Quinn asked "Why did Meryl Streep talk like that?"

I love fan mail from kids!
I recently visited Somerset Elementary in Bellevue and came home with a collection of adorable thank you letters from the primary kids. Here are some of my favorites:
Dear Kirby Larson, I liked Two Bobbies because it has a happy ending and I love your books. The cat can hear the chains! Amazing!
Dear Kirby Larson, I liked Two Bobbies because it's kind of sad and a little happy and because they have short tails.
Dear Kirby Larson, I liked your book Two Bobbies because it's non-fiction and tells you real facts about Hurricane Katrina and gives you survival tips.
Dear Kirby Larson, I liked Two Bobbies because it's so sad and my mom likes sad stories.
Dear Mrs. Larson, I liked your book Two Bobbies because usually dogs chase cats but these two don't. Isn't that cute?
Dear Ms. Larson, I liked your book Nubs because the dog is awesome. And the dog walked 70 miles with a limp.
Dear Mrs. Larson, I liked Nubs because it had the miltary force. And it had a really cute dog.
Dear Ms. Larson, I liked your books Nubs and 2 Bobbies. They were both very good and correctly worded. I want to have them in my home.
Dear Ms. Larson, I liked your book because it is true. Could you write a book about snakes?

2011 Kerlan Award
Though I've yet to visit, I love the Kerlan Collection at the University of Minnesota. I was first introduced to it by my good friend and longtime Kerlan volunteer, Norma Gaffron. I cannot get enough of their great notecards (note to self: time to order more!) and love the way they celebrate children's literature, especially through their manuscript collection.
Each year, an author is honored with a Kerlan Award and this year it is the good-hearted Jane Kurtz. Congratulations, Jane! This is so well-deserved.

Another Conference Opportunity
I have two words for you: Spring Conference.
Once again, the incredible SCBWI-Washington leadership has scored an awesome roster of faculty and presenters for their spring conference. It's the place to see and be seen, to hear and be heard.
If you've ever been, you know what I'm talking about. If you've never been, skedaddle over to the conference website and get the scoop.

Reading with Rover

Winston and I love being a Reading With Rover team-in-training (we have about 4 more volunteer hours to go then two RWR dates with a mentor and then we can be a bone-fido team!) but this was a great article giving a parent's perspective on the program.

Check This Out!

My lovely friend, Janet Lee Carey, not only writes amazing books, she has a heart as big as the state of Texas. Recently, she's launched a blog to celebrate librarians and their youth programs. Here's what she has to say: "Library Lions blog interviews Youth Librarians working in schools and public libraries.Library Lions Roars about the importance of libraries. We showcase terrific library programs serving children and teens across the U.S. Love Libraries? Swing by the blog and take a look. Librarians interested in being interviewed for the blog can contact me at jlcarey@hotmail.com."
Isn't this a fabulous idea? Check it out here. I'll bet Janet would love to hear suggestions from you for other "lions" to roar about.
