Online YA Workshop: A few spaces still available.
Hi, Goodreads!
I'm teaching an online YA workshop, and a few spaces in the class are still available. Here are the details:
First books (YA Contemporary) | Online | October 7-28, 2012
This course offers a critical exploration of the craft techniques found in the commercially successful and award-winning first novels of John Green, Deb Caletti, and Stephen Chbosky.
Location.
Private Google group.
Class size.
Each session is limited to 6 students.
Fee.
$175. (Receive $25 off for referrals. Maximum of $50 off.)
Registration will be paid online via PayPal. See below for details. Please note that this is a nonrefundable fee.
Reading Materials.
--The Queen of Everything by Deb Caletti
--Looking for Alaska by John Green
--The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
We will read short passages from each of these books to complete our assignments, so please have access to each title.
How this works.
Each week, you will be assigned close readings of one or two passages from our selected titles. The purpose of these readings is to identify and analyze, from a craft perspective, the four key components of a successful contemporary YA novel. Following the readings, you will complete a short writing assignment (1-2 pages), demonstrating your ability to incorporate that component into your own work-in-progress.
Weekly assignments.
Week 1. (The Perks of Being a Wallflower/Looking for Alaska) | Establishing your main character’s voice and identity.
Week 2. (The Queen of Everything) | Populating your fictional world.
Week 3. (All) | The passage of time, particularly the delicate art of weaving in flashbacks.
Week 4. (All) | Building Tension
You’ll have seven days to complete each writing assignment. I’ll respond to all work individually. You’ll also have the option of sharing your work with your classmates by posting your assignments on an in-class board. Guidelines will be supplied for peer responses.
Also...
Reading/Critical analysis | While reading the selected passages, we’ll participate in a group discussion of each author's craft techniques. These discussions are designed to develop a deeper understanding of the tools and tricks available to us as writers. I’ll set up the discussion prompts and eagerly await your responses.
Supplemental Materials | For fun, I’ll supply links to articles and essays on writing that will help inspire and motivate you. I’ll also post cheat sheets designed to help you outline your plot, analyze your characters, etc. These can be used while class is in session or afterward.
Registration Deadline.
Saturday, October 6.
