“Trailing clouds of glory”

Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting: The Soul that rises with us, our life’s Star,   60         Hath had elsewhere its setting,           And cometh from afar:         Not in entire forgetfulness,         And not in utter nakedness, But trailing clouds of glory do we come   65         From God, who is our home:   [Read More...]

A visit to Furness Abbey

We spent some time yesterday looking at the ruins of Furness Abbey, which, at the time of Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530s, was the second richest Cistercian institution in all of England, after an abbey in Yorkshire.  The weather was perfect.  Sunny, but not at all hot.     [Read More...]

Harvard professor who made papyrus about “Jesus’s wife” famous now thinks it a fake.

I put up a different link to this story a few days back, and only found out just now that that link was broken.  So here’s another, for those who might be interested:   https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/m...   Posted from Brockwood Hall, Cumbria, England

Brexit

Well, they did it.  The Queen’s subjects in the United Kingdom have voted, 52% to 48%, to withdraw from the European Union.   This wasn’t a neat “conservative”/”liberal” issue.  It doesn’t reflect a conveniently partisan divide.  And many observers are frankly puzzled as to what impact it will ultimately have.  (Right now, the [Read More...]

BOM Alma 35

One of the things that strike me about Alma 35 is its depiction of a wicked people (in this case, the Zoramites) who are absolutely enraged . . . by goodness.   There may have been a time when I would have found such a reaction implausible.   That time has long since passed. [Read More...]

“Royal Seal of Hezekiah Comes to Light”

Some of you may have missed this when it was announced at the end of last year:   http://www.biblicalarchaeology.org/da...   There are those who see no historical substance in the pre-exilic portions of the Old Testament or Hebrew Bible.  They’re wrong.   Posted from Brockwood Hall, Cumbria, England

“A brief history of LDS charities”

And, by “brief,” I mean really brief.  It’s less than three minutes long:   http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article...   But members of the Church can justly be gratified by what their church is doing.   Posted from Brockwood Hall, Cumbria, England
