Neon blue lava

Noticing my interest in geology, Charles Steinman sent the following eerily spectacular link to me:   http://amazinggeology.blogspot.com/20...   Posted from Koloa, Kauai, Hawaii

A new film for a new LDS visitors center in Harmony, PA

For many years now, I’ve hoped that, someday, there would be a Church visitor’s center at the relatively neglected site of Harmony, Pennsylvania.  Finally, it seems that there will be one.   In this short video, Stephen Allen, managing director of the Missionary Department of the Church, and Reid Neilson, managing director of the [Read More...]

On the right side of History

Fairly frequently, on various topics, I’m informed by people with whom I disagree that I’m on “the wrong side of history,” or something to that effect.  (In recent years, it’s typically said with regard to the issue of redefining marriage.)   I’ve always found this notion puzzling, because I simply don’t know what it would [Read More...]

2 Nephi 7

I’ve always loved the first verse of Isaiah 50, which is also the first verse of today’s reading, 2 Nephi 7.   Here, the Lord addresses wayward Israel as his children, pointing out they remain his children.  He hasn’t divorced their mother or disowned or repudiated them.   Any estrangement that exists is [Read More...]

Innocently at play in the fields of Polynesian etymology

I’ve already mentioned my quite ignorant fascination with Hawaiian geology.   I’m also smitten with Polynesian lexicography.   I know about fifteen or twenty words of Hawaiian, and perhaps an equal number in the language of the Maori, and that pretty well exhausts my competence in Polynesian linguistics.  I’ve never read anything at [Read More...]

“How liberals are unwittingly paving the way for the legislation of adult incest”

There is no slippery slope!  There is no slippery slope!   It’s too ridiculous even to think about!   There is no slippery slope!   There’s no cause for concern!   All is well in Babylon!   But here’s an interesting little piece from Damon Linker (who, by the way, isn’t LDS):   http://theweek.com/article/index/2689... Upcoming Sperry Symposium on the Apostle Peter

http://news.byu.edu/archive14-sep-spe...   Unfortunately, it’s on 24-25 October 2014, which means that The Interpreter Foundation’s conference on the temple, which will also be held on 25 October, and also on the campus of BYU, will conflict directly with it.   I’m hoping that such competition never occurs again.   But here’s looking on the [Read More...]

Yours Truly on KSL Radio this coming Sunday

I’ve just now recorded a twenty-minute interview with Martin Tanner, via telephone, regarding The Interpreter Foundation.   It will air this coming Sunday, as Martin Tanner’s “Religion Today” program on KSL Radio in Salt Lake City (102.7 FM; 1160 AM; streaming) at 6:30 AM and 9:30 PM.  (“Religion Today” usually also airs at [Read More...]

“The Miracles of Jesus”

Deseret Book monitors its sales over conference weekends as a way of gauging what sorts of things its customers find of interest.   I’m hoping that Deseret Book will recognize that a substantial subset of its audience has an interest in serious, faithful writing about the scriptures that is informed by reputable biblical [Read More...]

“Why traditional marriage supporters think 2015 will be a turning point in debate”

http://dailysignal.com/2014/09/29/tra...   It’s tempting, sometimes, to think that all is lost, whatever the merits of the argument may be.  But perhaps not.  We shall see.   Posted from Koloa, Kauai, Hawaii
