who was the fool who was tasked with naming the galaxy and the only adjective they could think of was ‘mmmmmmmmmmmmilky…’

NO

YOU DONT UNDERSTAND

ASTRONOMERS ARE THE SHITTIEST EVER AT NAMING THINGS I KID YOU NOT.

When it came time to name the two theoretical particle types that might be dark matter THEY INTENTIONALLY CHOSE THE NAMES SO THAT THE ACRONYMS WOULD SPELL “WIMPS” AND “MACHOS” I SHIT YOU NOT

THEY ARE FUCKING TERRIBLE AT NAMING ANYTHING

I just listened to a talk by Neil deGrasse Tyson himself LAST NIGHT and he went on about this more than once.

“I’m walking down the street and I’m like ‘ooh pretty rock…’ and some Geologist is like ‘actually, that’s anorthosite feldspar’ and I’m like ‘Nevermind, I don’t want it anymore.’ Any biologists in the audience? [some clapping] Yeah, you know what I’m talking about. The most important molecule in the human body, what did you name it? It has NINE SYLLABLES and it’s so long that even YOU GUYS abbreviate it as ‘DNA’!

But astrophysicists and astronomers? No, man, we call it like we see it. Star made of neutrons? NEUTRON STAR. Small white star? WHITE DWARF. You know that big red spot on Jupiter? Know what we called it? JUPITER’S RED SPOT.”

okay i’m glad you mentioned the biologist nonsense bc their naming methods are the bane of my existence

I see your astrophysicists-are-shit-at-names and raise you Marine-Biologists-Are-Fucking-Maniacs.

See this beautiful creature?

It’s a carnivorous deep-sea sponge that lives off of Easter Island and never sees the light of day, as it’s about 9000 feet down. Those delicate-looking orbs are covered in millions of tiny hooked spines, which latch onto anything unfortunate enough to bump into it, and hold it in place as it is digested alive by the sponge’s skin.  Amazing, beautiful and profoundly creepy.  They could have given it so many cool names.  Could have drawn on mythology (I think Scylla would have been an appropriate reference), the region it was found in, the textured skin, PHAGOCYTOSIS, anything!

You wanna know what they called it?

PING-PONG TREE SPONGE.

Good job, marine biologists.

The five types of writers block

Inspirationless: where you have the motivation but just can't think of anything good to write.

Motivation Deprived: you have the idea, but just, don't really wanna.

Pooped: Basically you have no ideas and don't really feel like writing anyways.

Procrastination: Where you are SO PUMPED TO GET THIS THING DONE!! But, there's that other thing, and, your show is on, and, you'll just do it tomorrow.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-

We’ve come such a long way from the time when a book had to end in bridal veils to be considered good… or have we? *wink

Anyway, I love this shot.

Writer Questions Tag!

1. Which new genre would you like to try and write?

I don’t think there’s much I haven’t tried, except for straight up detective/crime fiction, but I’m planning a new adult Sherlock retelling series soon! Anyone up for that?

2. What’s your favourite writing tool?

ma laptop

3. How do you explore your characters? (eg. drawing them, moodboards, casting)

Ooooh moodboards all the way. Also, playlists of songs that remind me of them or my story are a given.

4. What is a popular writing advice that you disagree with and don’t follow?

I never follow writing “advice” sorry. The term itself is kind of laughable, as the whole point of writing is to bring something new and original that comes straight out of your SOUL.

5. What is your least favourite trope?

Is it possible to have a ‘favorite’ trope? I avoid all of them like the plague (and you should too)

6. What’s the one thing that you need if you have to start writing? (eg.a favourite pen, chocolate.etc. Exclude things like laptop, mobile, inspiration, ideas.)

My laptop. Most of the time, I need my notes in order to write (as I outline and plot extensively) and also, my bear to keep me company.

7. Which is your guilty pleasure trope / cliche?

Again, I don’t do tropes or cliches. Sorry.

8. Which would you prefer? Self-published or traditionally published?

100% self published. Hands down. Can’t recommend it enough. It’s been a dreeeeeeam.

9. What ambience motivates you to write?

Night.

10. What is the one thing you would never write about?

Horror.

11. What is your favorite piece of fiction?

The classics

12. If you could live the life of any author, who would it be?

The ones I can think about had prettttyyy horrible lives, so no thank you.

13. Pantser or Planner?

Complete and utter planner.

14. What is the most helpful bit of writing advice you have received?

Read.

15. How does politics work in your WIP?

My WIP is a Robin Hood story, so politics are a big part of it. I’m using it as a parable for a modern political situation I feel very strongly about and that isn’t much different from the opporession that was going on in Robin’s England. It’s sad, but very close to my heart. It’s one of the reasons I’m writing this book, and I really hope it resonates with at least one reader (hopefully more).

16. Favorite fantasy creature?

Mermaids.

17. Would you rather spend all day writing in silence or reading with music?

Writing. There will be no silence then, because the characters will be talking.

18. Do you leave feedback on other’s works?

Always. My inbox is open ;)
