Losing Faith, and Other Connundrums
It's been a long while since I've posted to this account. Not because I haven't had things to say, but because I've been busy with the business and other things.
I'd like to say my writing has taken off, but it hasn't. Instead, it has been a fight. Which annoys me greatly. I've watched and helped other writers find their voice, which has been satisfying, to a certain extent. But now Lachlan has been impatiently waiting for me to tell his story.
Why? Because it's unfinished. And because there's a lot to write about. More than I suspected at first.
Maybe I had to grow as a writer. Maybe I had to stop being lazy. Maybe I had to understand a part of myself first. Whatever the reason, I realized that somewhere along the way, I lost the unshakable faith in myself. I knew why, but about a week ago, I was reading the book The Wealthy Freelancer. Yeah, I've been feeling like I'm anything but wealthy. So, when I hit a passage about how wealthy freelancers have an unshakable faith in themselves, something clicked. More than clicked. More like screamed, "YES!"
I didn't have any faith in myself as a writer. Not anymore.
Suddenly, the light turned on. Years of not getting things done suddenly became crystal clear to me. I had lost faith in myself. I knew this already. But the obvious answer was I wasn't going to regain it easily. The Web of Wyrd sat on my computer in bits and pieces -- 65K of story that was terribly unfinished and yet, I didn't know what to do with it. All the time I wrote and edited, it became a bigger mess with no apparent way to wrap the story up properly.
And yet, recently I realized it's a mess for a reason. I was trying to stuff too much stuff in a 100K book. (This, incidently was the problem with Runestone of Teiwas when I had to rewrite it for publication.) I think I try to stuff 20 lbs of crap in a 5 lb sack. Laudable, I suppose, but not a good idea. I took a piece of software I had bought called Writer's Cafe that gave me a way to outline via scenes and I outlined the first damn book. Renamed that book to The Jotunn Gate and even made tweaks on the ending last night and today. Now, I'm taking scenes and cutting them out of the former manuscript and giving them a scene name corresponding to the title of the book and the scene number. That should get me further along than I have been. At least I'll know what I need to write to finish the book.
