I went on vacation for three weeks very recently, and I took The Three Musketeers with me.  I’d not read it since 1993,I was a freshmen in College, and I found this pair of Dumas books in the French Lit section, beautiful, old, dark green books with gold lettering, and I borrowed them.  Loved both it and Twenty Years After, but I never read the rest of the romances.    My parents owned a bunch of Dumas books, it never occurred to me that we didn’t have the first two books, so until recently I didn’t know I needed to get them.  I couldn’t resist the new translation by Hobson, I liked the sample, and so far I’ve not been disappointment.  And, well, the cover might not be green with gold lettering, but I rather like it.    So, I took the boys along.  I started reading it on a beach off of Lake Huron, then we traveled up past Soo Locks and into Canada.  Eventually we ended up at Riding Mountain, where I read about the adventures of the boys by a camp fire.  I am a terrible camper, as you can see by my love of electric blankets and kettles.    Here’s a picture of me by a water fall in Banff.  Just in case you needed a picture to frighten naughty children or something.  By the time we got out of Canada I’d read a good chunk of the book…not as much as I would have liked, because, well, traveling, camping – it was often too dark to read by the time we’d stopped for the night, or I was too brain dead.  We did have a 45 minute wait for the ferry taking us from Seattle area across the sound.  The boys helped ALOT then.  And the final picture is me reading with a view of the Pacific Ocean, from the Sandpiper Inn.  I could happily read near water any time.
