I’ve got a bone to pick with Max Adams. I can’t afford to be buying these lush and expensive history hardbacks, nor do I have the time to read them. You have this brought into my bookshop and expect me to go about my daily business without dropping a load of money on it in a heartbeat. Oh no, sir. Not this girl. Not today.

Booklr Secret Santa/Christmas Card Exchange

curls-and-books:

Hello everyone and welcome to the Booklr Secret Santa / Christmas Card Exchange!!

I’m getting together the booklr community in a worldwide gift giving exchange for Christmas 2015 :)

Here’s how its going to work:
First and foremost – you MUST be over 18 to participate in this. I am an adult myself, and I don’t want to get in trouble handling personal information of minors. Sorry about this, but I just want to keep both of us safe. If this goes well, then I may continue hosting these, and I’m sure one year you will be 18+ for it, so never fear! So please, only over 18’s can participate in this. Thank you for your understanding!

1. Send me an email to livimarie28@hotmail.com with the following details:
– Name & tumblr URL, & address you want package to be sent to
– Up to five books that you want/a link to your wishlist if you have one
– Up to five interests, e.g. hobbies, tv show/movies you like, favourite genres of books (includes manga or comics), etc so that if people want to send you something other than a book they know your likes!
– Up to five dislikes to avoid getting something you really don’t want

2. I will attempt to pair you with someone in your country (so that shipping isn’t ridiculously high)

3. You then anonymously buy them something! It can be any number of things – a single book, a bunch of bookmarks, a tshirt from their favourite fandom, etc etc. It’s up to you how much you want to spend, though I guess I suggest not going too overboard? Don’t leave yourself skint, since Xmas is a pretty pricey time! I’d say an upper amount of £25/equivalent, but again, it’s up to you how much you want to spend.

4. Make sure that you’re sending the package with enough time for it to get there for Christmas. Bear in mind that postal services are inundated in the month of December, so try to get it posted up to two weeks before Christmas Eve, if not more! I want people to be able to open their packages on Christmas Day.

5. Please let me know via the above email address when you have posted the package and the estimated delivery date(s), if you’ve been given them. That way I can chase anyone who hasn’t sent out their packages yet, and I can also let the recipient know when to expect it, if they wish to know.

6. When you decide to open your package (it can be Xmas day or before or after, totally up to you), make a post about it using the tags #booklr secret santa or #booklr christmas card exchange, and also tag me, as I’d love to see what y’all got! Then, when you see your recipient posting that they’ve opened their package, make yourself known to them!

7. Enjoy the awesome feeling of buying someone a gift!

Now I understand that not everyone can afford to take part in something like this. Don’t worry, I am not leaving you out just yet! If you wish to spend a little less, then tell me in the email that you want to sign up for the ‘Christmas Card Exchange’ instead. Again, I will try to pair you with someone in your country to save on postage. You can then just send someone a card, and if you want you can include small things like a bookmark, some stickers, a postcard, etc, the sort of thing that won’t make to card too heavy or bulky to buy postage for.

I will be taking applications until October 31st 2015. I will then email you between November 1-7 (depending on how many applicants I get, as it could take me some time to match everyone around working a full time job!) with the details of your recipient. This will include their tumblr URL, so that when the time comes you can let them know you were their ‘Santa’! You will then have 6-7 weeks to sort out your package and get it sent out.

Just a few last things;
– I WON’T share your personal details with *anyone* expect your gift giver – your safety is paramount to me. However, I cannot be held responsible for your information after I have disclosed it to your sender. Please be aware of this in making your decision to take part. I trust all of y’all, but you never know.

– You don’t have to follow me, but it’d be nice if you did, I’m always up for making new friends!

– Finally, and *most importantly*…. have fun

Karl Bryullov – Svetlana Guessing on her Future, 1836

“Svetlana” was a Romantic poem by Vasily Zhukovsky. The story is about  a girl named Svetlana, who tried to guessing her future on Christmas Eve. She used mirror and candles, like is shown on the painting ( that’s traditional Russian way of guessing).

But then – yes, we’re speaking about Romantic poem – some evil forces arose, and Svetlana sunk into the depths of folkloric nightmare.
