Virtual Titanic Cruise, Day Three
APRIL 3rd POST:
Can you sense it, passengers? Do you feel the excitement as departure day approaches? Perhaps you've already tried to imagine what your room will look like. I've seen many of the suites in the first-class section already, and am breathless as I consider the luxury they will provide our guests. Many of our suites boast drawing rooms with desks and settees, spacious bedrooms with canopy beds and the finest linens. Even the pillowcases are trimmed out.
In many of our staterooms the walls are papered in red velvet. Truly, one feels like royalty. And the lights! Titanic is the first ship with electric lights in every room. In fact, more than 10,000 light bulbs are used onboard. And that's not all! Hand-carved bedposts, gilded sconces, plush carpeting. . .talk about a feast for the eyes. You will feel as if you're staying in the grandest hotel in town. A floating hotel, no less! And our stewards are at your beck and call, always ready to meet your needs, day or night. As a matter of fact, we will have more than 200 stewards onboard, approximately one for every 1.5 passengers. You will be well cared for.
Second class passengers will find their accommodations far beyond what one might expect on other liners. Staterooms offer lovely beds and plenty of room to rest and relax. Why, even our third-class passengers will be thrilled to find a washbasin in each room, as well as adequate bed space. Our guests will travel in style, regardless of deck or class.
Of course, you won't want to spend all of your time in your stateroom or suite. First class passengers are encouraged to take full advantage of the other fine areas on the "A" deck, including the promenade, the lounge, a reading/writing room, a wonderful library, the first class smoking room, the Verandah café, and the Palm Court. On the "B" deck one can enjoy the Grand Promenade suites, a lovely restaurant, a galley, and the Café Parisian.
As you can tell, the White Star Line has spared no expense. We want our guests to remember this trip for the rest of their lives. Truly, this will be one journey you won't soon forget. For more, take a peek here: http://www.titanic-titanic.com/titanic_first_class_interiors.shtml
So, what are you planning to do inside of your stateroom? Visit with friends or family members? Take a long nap as the boat makes its way across the sea? Read a book? Sit at the desk and compose letters to friends? The possibilities are endless!

Virtual Titanic Cruise, Day Two
APRIL 2nd MORNING POST:
It's the morning of April 2nd, 1912 and sea trials are currently underway for the S.S. Titanic! Before the day's end I will return to let you know whether or not the "Queen of the Ocean" has received the necessary certification to sail. Until then, please allow me to answer some of your questions.
Many of you have inquired about your accommodations onboard Titanic, so I felt this might be a good day to share the particulars about our luxurious ocean liner. She is truly the ship of dreams.
To begin, Titanic boasts nine glorious decks, rising in shimmer and shine as you ascend. She has four smokestacks, though one is used for ventilation only. The Ocean's Queen weighs 46k tons and will carry a total of 3500 people (passengers and crew) as she travels from Southampton to New York. She will go through 650 tons of coal per day.
Speaking of coal, as most are aware, we here in England have been experiencing a coal strike, which has put 17,000 men out of work. In order to set sail, our fair Titanic has to "borrow" coal from other ships. Still, we feel it will be worth it to accommodate you, our passengers. We want to make sure we travel in a timely fashion, so expect top speeds of 24 knots.
In upcoming days we will spend time discussing the staterooms and suites, as well as the various dining halls. We commit to offer you, our guests, only the finest accommodations. You will sleep like a babes and dine like kings while aboard this floating palace.
Wondering what to do when you're not sleeping or eating? Consider a swim in our pool or a workout at the gymnasium. I plan to stay in shape while onboard, though I fear the tantalizing foods will prove to be more of a temptation than I'm willing to admit. If you're fond of photography, you will love our darkroom. If you're a cigar enthusiast, you will appreciate our three cigar rooms. Travel up and down in the first class areas on our amazing elevators. (We hate to boast, of course, but Titanic is the first luxury liner with elevators. Only the finest for our guests!)
Our fair ship is scheduled to leave Southampton on the 10th, as you know, and her projected arrival in New York will take place (Lord willing) on April 17th. Seven glorious days at sea will give you all of the time you desire to enjoy all of our amenities.
So, what are you looking forward to the most? A swim in the pool? Strolling about the decks? Mealtime? A cigar with the men? Please share your expectations with others onboard as we prepare to enjoy the cruise together.

Virtual Titanic Cruise, Day One
APRIL 1st 1912 POST:
Happy Sunday, everyone! This is Janice Thompson, your cruise director here aboard the Titanic. Most of you are packing your bags in preparation for our adventure, which begins in ten days (on April 10th). At that point, we will sail out of Southampton. I would imagine you have already purchased your tickets and have acquired the necessary documentation for sailing. Our third class passengers need to be aware of two things: 1). You must go through a medical inspection upon boarding. While we hate to inconvenience you, this is necessary to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all onboard. 2). You will dine like kings, whether you're in third class or first! We promise to offer the finest that the White Star Line has to offer to all of our guests, so come hungry!
If you have not yet purchased your tickets, get them as quickly as possible. Titanic will carry people from every class and station, and all will be treated with equal care and concern. Third-class passage can be had for as little as $36. Quite a deal, for such a trip as this! Rumor has it that first-class passengers have paid upwards of $4300 to travel aboard this magnificent "Queen of the Ocean," and they will certainly get what they've paid for, both in service and style. Those who choose our second-class option will be thrilled with the accommodations, the food and the service. In fact, I dare say, all will be talking about this cruise for years to come, regardless of class.
Friends, as your cruise director, I thought it would be nice to bring you up to speed on our lovely ship. Titanic's keel was laid in 1909 in Belfast Ireland. She took three years to build and over 3000 builders offered their services to craft her into such an awe-inspiring liner. Your heart will swell with excitement as you gaze upon her nine decks. You will be mesmerized by the four smokestacks, which rise to heights unseen. (Are there really four, or is that an illusion?) Your imagination will work overtime as you ascend the Grand Staircase and gaze upon "Honor and Glory."
Just yesterday (March 31st) Titanic was launched with more than 100,000 people watching! Oh, what a glorious day that was! I'm still reeling with excitement, can still hear the roar of the crowd. I know that same roar will go up once we board in Southampton on the 10th, as well. I can hardly wait. I know you must certainly feel the same as you purchase your traveling clothes and pack your steamer trunks.
As for the ship, she will carry over 800 crewmembers, and I'm proud to call myself one of them. We will take on approximately 2500 passengers (some in Southampton, others in Cherbourg, still more in Queensland). I won't be able to give you solid numbers until we're out to sea.
Speaking of heading out to sea, tomorrow Titanic faces her sea trials. I will be back to let you know how those went. Please offer up a prayer, if you think of it. And please join in the conversation, particularly if you plan to sail with us.
Now that I've told you how Titanic has prepared for her journey, it's time for you to tell us what you've done to prepare for yours! Let your fellow passengers know what country you're from, what you've gone through to purchase your ticket, how you've prepared for your journey and how you plan to travel to Southampton (or Cherbourg/Queensland). Thank you for joining in the conversation. Can't wait to meet you face-to-face aboard the S.S. Titanic, the Ship of Dreams!

New Book, New Course. . .All Things New!
I just love the springtime! Everything feels so new and fresh! And there's no better time than the spring to introduce a new book. . .and a new writing course! Please enjoy the following Q&A, which I put together for bloggers to spread the word about my new ventures!
Welcome, Janice. Can you tell us about your latest venture?

Make Money Writing
Thanks for having me. I'm thrilled to share about my latest book, MAKE MONEY WRITING, which is now available from amazon for kindle users. The book, which is loaded with helpful hints for freelancers, is free from March 12th – March 17th. After that, it will sell for $4.49.
Can you tell us a little about yourself and your writing experience?
Sure! I write under the names "Janice Thompson" and "Janice Hanna." I just signed contract #79 (For QUEEN OF THE WAVES) and have written in a variety of genres, including romance, historical, contemporary, cozy mystery, juvenile fiction, non-fiction and more. I'm best known for my light-hearted contemporary novels and for my quirky characters. I'm pretty passionate about writing, and even more passionate about helping others discover their writing talents and abilities. For the past seven years I've worked as a full-time freelancer, earning my living with my books, teachings, articles, and write-for-hire work.
Why did you decide to write this book?
For several years now I've divided my time between freelance writing and teaching. So many aspiring writers discover that I've published several books and they come to me to ask the inevitable, "How do I get published?" question, usually followed by, "Is there really money to be made in publishing?" Over the past couple years I've put together several freelance writing courses to answer their questions, but I felt the need to do more, so I compiled all of my mini-teachings into one book.
Will readers get all of the same materials they would get in one of your courses?
No, the courses are very specific to their individual topics. MAKE MONEY WRITING covers a variety of areas of interest to the freelance writer, including: earning top dollar, magazine article writing, write-for-hire work, writing the novel and/or non-fiction book, the submission process, succeeding as a freelancer, and more. The book is not a textbook. Instead, it is motivational in tone and focuses on offering encouragement to freelancers and giving them basic tips for success in each of the areas listed above.
Can you tell us a little more about the book?
Sure! It might make more sense to share some of the chapter titles because they will give you an idea of some of the topics readers will find in the book.

I'm convinced this is the most comprehensive package I've ever put together. New E-Books Releasing!
I've been up-up-uploading!
Happy Wednesday, friends! I've been a busy girl over the past twenty-four hours, uploading my older, out-of-print books to kindle. The books you see listed below have never been available in e-book form before, so this is definitely fun! Some of these books are over twenty years old. I toyed with the idea of updating them, but decided to leave most as they were originally written (with only a few tweaks for typos/grammatical issues). The children's series has a total of five books, but I've only prepped two of them for kindle, thus-far. More will come over the next week or two. Formatting and uploading is a tedious process! At any rate, take a look at these "new" e-books and help me spread the word by sharing a link to this blog entry on your Facebook page, twitter or blog. Thanks so much!

E-Book Release: I Must Decrease
ANNOUNCING New e-book release by comedic author, Janice Hanna Thompson: I Must Decrease: Biblical Inspiration and Encouragement for Dieters
Janice, can you tell us a little about your non-fiction e-book book, I MUST DECREASE?
Sure! As a comedic author, I usually write light-hearted stories. I'm known as the funny girl. I get the giggles and chuckle my way through most situations. Not everything is funny, however. When it came to my weight, however, I had very little to laugh about. Most of my readers didn't realize the health crisis I was facing as a result of the added pounds. I needed to get things under control, so I started counting calories and watching what I ate. Out of that came my non-fiction book, I MUST DECREASE (which released in paperback in 2005). The book is set up in a daily devotional format and it meant to bring humor (as well as dieting tips) to Christians who need/want to lose weight.
Why did you choose the title I MUST DECREASE?
The title came as a result of a prayer time at church. I'd gone up for prayer and the gentleman praying for me used the scripture (John 3:30) as he prayed for me: "He must increase, but I must decrease." For whatever reason, it got me tickled. I'd never thought about that particular scripture having anything to do with dieting before, but it suddenly felt right.
Can you tell us about the layout of the book?
Each day's devotion offers the following:
Ticklers: A humorous quote or "thought for the day" to tickle your funny bone.
Tidbits: A "Did You Know?" area offering tidbits of information from multiple sources.
Traps: Common misconceptions and/or food "traps" we often fall into
Tricks: "Tricks of the trade" to help you stick with your plan
Treats: Clever snack and food ideas for the healthy eater
Testimonies: Personal testimonies of others who've faced the weight loss challenge and won (including some prominent personalities)
Treasures: Daily scripture reference
Tips: Devotional for the day, based on the daily scripture above
Turning Your Focus: A variety of ways you can reach out to others
Today's Food Choices: A reminder to write down your daily food choices
Thoughts on Paper: Encouragement to keep a daily journal entry
Why did you choose the humorous approach?
Being overweight is nothing to laugh at, but most people who want to lose weight are tired of the serious, "Thou shalt not" approach. Many are ready for a lighthearted look at weight loss–"a practical devotional approach that offers scriptural advice in a way that encourages and never condemns. I decided to share light-hearted ways that dieters could lose weight and still keep their humor intact. This way I could keep my funny bone intact while losing weight.
Who contributed to the book?
I MUST DECREASE contains tips and testimonies from several well-known (and much-loved) Christian authors, including Mary Connealy, Lena Nelson Dooley, Martha Rogers, Kristin Billerbeck, Laurie Alice Eakes, Carrie Turansky, Marcia Gruver, Deb Ulrich, Gina Bishop, Pam Hillman and Lynette Sowell. I adore these ladies and am so grateful for their input.
Who can benefit from this book?
I would say that anyone concerned with their weight (or the weight of a loved one) could benefit from reading. Whether you want to drop five pounds of 150, this is the book to help you achieve that goal.
Can you tell us about the special feature?
This e-book version of my devotional contains a few of my favorite low-cal recipes. Bon Appetite!
What sort of feedback have you gotten from readers so far?
Here's what one Amazon reader had to say: "This Book Works! I loved this book. As soon as I started reading I was not only motivated to lose weight, but inspired that I actually could this time. I lost 39 lbs and feel free from the bondage that food can put you in. This is a lite-hearted book with biblical principals as well as helpful hints to rid yourself of unwanted pounds without "Dieting" or "Dieing" to eat. The journal pages have been so instrumental to my progress, do not read the book without using the journal section daily!" May 26, 2011 (by megamomma)
Why did you decide to offer the book for free for the first five days?
I love the kindle select program and thought it would be fun to jump-start the process by giving away the book from February 22nd – February 26th. Readers can download the book for free by following this link to I MUST DECREASE.
Can you tell us about your I MUST DECREASE Facebook group?
I would love to! More than a year ago I started a private group on Facebook for a handful of ladies (like myself) who wanted to have the camaraderie of fellow Christian dieters. The group has since grown! Men and women are welcome to join us, but if you do, be prepared to share recipes, fun and tidbits from your personal journey. What happens in I MUST DECREASE stays in I MUST DECREASE! That's why the group will always remain private. To apply to the group, follow this link to I MUST DECREASE.
What happens when the "freebie" days end?
The book will still be available for purchase on Amazon (and eventually on Barnes and Noble).
Any advice for the road?
Sure! Make sure you write down what you eat every day. This simple process forces you to look at the calories/carbs you're consuming. It also makes you very aware of the slip-ups! I use a great site called fitday.com, which I highly recommend!

Set Sail Aboard the Virtual Titanic!
When one is known for her comedic writing, she thinks twice about taking on a story about the sinking of the Titanic. Imagine my surprise when Summerside/Guideposts fell head-over (pun intended) for my story idea involving the great ship. Queen of the Waves is a twisted tale, loaded with all the elements—romance, intrigue, and a cast of characters with more luggage than the kind one can carry aboard. Writing is underway and the story is set to release later this year.
So, how does one go about promoting a story like this when one is known for comedy? My answer came from a Facebook friend who suggested I take an anniversary cruise. On the morning of April 10th, exactly 100 years to the day after the Titanic set sail from Southampton, the Balmoral will set sail carrying 1309 passengers. She will follow the path of the Titanic, pausing in the spot when the great ship struck the now-infamous iceberg on April 15th.
My response to my friend's suggestion? No thanks! However, the wheels started turning in my brain as I thought the idea through. I might not be interested in boarding a real ship, but what about a "Virtual Titanic" cruise to commemorate the 100-year anniversary? Now, that sounded like fun. I put my feelers out, and within minutes had a response from several readers: "Yes! We want to board your cruise!" With their enthusiasm building, I quickly created a "Queen of the Waves" group on Facebook and put out the following invitation to all interested parties:
Come One, Come All!
Please join me for a "Virtual Titanic" cruise of the Atlantic, leaving April 1st and ending on April 15th. Meet with me in my "Queen of the Waves" Facebook group where we'll spend the first nine days of April learning how/where the Titanic was built, who boarded, and what was at stake. We will also share tidbits about life in 1912 in England and New York. Early on the morning of April 10th (exactly 100 years to the date after the real Titanic set sail from Southampton) we will begin our virtual cruise. You can choose to travel in first, second or third class. Your choice. I think it would be fun to mix it up a little, so don't everyone opt for first, okay? And we'll need crew members, too, so some of you can sign on as workers. More on this later. To join the virtual cruise, just ask to join the Queen of the Waves group. Starting April 1st I will post several times a day and you are invited to post, as well. We'll chronicle our days aboard the great ship and experience the journey together. Feel free to spread the word! Come one, come all! But, watch out for those icebergs!
And come, they did! The ship is filling with all sorts of folks who are already requesting specific classes and cabins. (Back in 1912 you could get a third-class ticket for $36, but a first class ticket would run you up to $4700! My cruise will cost you nothing at all. . .other than a wee bit of time, of course!) Our Virtual Titanic guests are already sharing photos of the dresses they plan to wear to dinner the first night and chatting about who they plan to hob-nob with while aboard the ship. We can hardly wait to set sail.
I sent a quick note to my editors to bring them up to speed (pun also intended) and they jumped onboard at once. Literally. My editors will be sailing with me!
As if I didn't have enough to celebrate, one of my Facebook friends is the great-great niece of Edward Smith, the captain of the Titanic. She has agreed to serve as our captain while aboard the ship. I'll serve at the cruise director, of course, offering entertainment all along the way.
So, that's it, folks! You are welcome to join me for the cruise of a lifetime. Pack your trunks! Bring your warmest clothes. Prepare yourself for several days at sea. Get your tickets by asking to join "Queen of the Waves." If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at:
booksbyjanice@aol.com
Facebook: JaniceHannaThompson

SPECIAL NOTE FOR TEACHERS AND/OR HOMESCHOOL PARENTS: I'm particularly interested in having students join us. Perhaps you would consider giving your student an assignment to travel the high seas with us. They can choose their clothing, decide their daily activities, meet friends on the ship and much more. Along the way, they will get a thorough teaching about the Titanic (albeit it in a fun, entertaining way). They will also learn a lot about turn-of-the-century customs, manners, and so on.

Worth Its Weight in Old (Karen Maxwell Mystery Series)
By K.D. Hays
Paintings slashed… Furniture broken… Someone is wreaking havoc at the Blue Moon Art & Antiques Gallery. Fledgling private investigator Karen Maxwell goes undercover as a salesclerk to find out who's behind the vandalism, and why. She learns little from friendly clerk Vicki and Eric, the shop's surly, tight- lipped porter, would run over her with a hand truck before he'd answer any questions. The guilt may even lay with the shop owners themselves, despite the fact that they're the ones who hired her.
Karen's investigation seems to be going nowhere—just like her once-promising relationship with Brian, the handsome blacksmith who could sweep her off her feet in a minute… if he'd ever take a break from working with the church youth group. Frustration mounts as her dreams of romantic evenings turn into endless rehearsals for the church Christmas play. If Karen can't crack the case soon, she may find herself busted back to plain, old office manager, her dreams of a career as a private investigator—and a life with Brian—as old and busted as the Blue Moon's vandalized antiques.
