Black History Month Special Event

I hope all of you had an amazing week.

I was a vendor at a Black History Month Gala in Virginia last Saturday! The keynote speaker was Erika Alexander – she was an actress on The Cosby Show (Cousin Pam) and on Living Single (Maxine). She’s also starred in a number of other shows and movies! Here’s a pic of the two of us! She’s holding one of my books!

Remember to keep our country in prayer as all/some of these changes take place! At times, transitions do not run smoothly! Also, remember to pray for all that are suffering in our nation!

Be sure to check on your friends and loved ones to be sure they are okay! A friend of mine recently had a heart attack and is scheduled for surgery. If you have friends who are sick or hospitalized be sure to visit or call them to be sure that they are okay!

Black History Month

I hope all of you had an amazing week.

Just wanted to encourage all to celebrate Black History Month!

I grew up in the seventies. Back then, we didn’t learn about prominent African Americans such as Martin Luther King Jr. in the classroom – at least they did not teach about that in my area. I recall that I had to find out information about them by going to the library and by asking questions. Yes, we did learn about slavery – and I feel that all children need to learn the history of all races who are a part of America. We’re a nation that is built on immigrants as well as those who were forced to arrive here as slaves.

Check out some of my historical titles. The Baker’s Bride is about a freed slave who is now working in Philadelphia, trying to support herself. She’s also helping with the abolitionist movement. Ruth – the heroine in The Baker’s Bride – her boyfriend died because he didn’t receive medical care since he was a slave. If he’d not been discriminated – he may have lived. Such a traumatic event impels Ruth to do all that she can to obliterate slavery.

The Doctor’s Bride is my other historical title. Back in the 1800’s it was difficult for African-Americans to go to college – it was doubly hard if you were female. But Deborah, a school teacher, is determined to attend a women’s college to study botany.

I’m still writing The Blacksmith’s Bride. I’ve been sharing tidbits of research over the last few weeks.

The Blacksmith’s Bride

I’m still writing The Blacksmith’s Bride – a historical novel set a few years after the Civil War. The Blacksmith’s Bride is the third book in the Romance Bride Series.

I’m still researching while I write my novel. My main character, Benjamin, is of mixed race. The term used during those times, for someone of his racial identity, was quadroon (1/4 Black or having one Black grandparent). Did you know that the African American communities had a social “caste” system where those who had lighter skin had a higher social status than those with darker complexions? At times, those with lighter skin may have better economic and social opportunities. However, these individuals were still considered Black under the law and by white society, for the most part.

As I mentioned last week, I’m having fun learning new things as I write The Blacksmith’s Bride.

Our country is going through a lot of…changes. Remember to pray for the USA and for those who are suffering.

The Blacksmith’s Bride

I’m still writing The Blacksmith’s Bride – a historical novel set a few years after the Civil War. The Blacksmith’s Bride is the third book in the Romance Bride Series. I’m still researching while I write my novel. Did you know that the African American elite hosted balls and other formal events before and after the Civil War?

These events were modeled after white formal events. A ball in 1867 for Black Americans might include men who were dressed in formal attire such as waistcoats, cravats and they might even carry walking sticks. Women would wear silk or taffeta gowns. A famous speaker, such as Frederick Douglass, might also attend.

A formal meal might be served which may have included roasted meats, oysters, biscuits, cakes and expensive wine. A live band would have provided the music. Attendees may have taken part in formal dances, such as a waltz. The venue would have been decorated with chandeliers, candles and other beautiful elements.
