An Evening at The Bookshop

An event…

It’s been in my diary for weeks and if you’re following me on social media, you can’t have missed it.

Last night was Who Dunnit? at the legendary bookshop in East Grinstead (people have crossed continents to visit it).

We were celebrating National Crime Reading Month, supported by the Reading Agency, and a packed house came to have a glass of wine and hear Angela Dyson (The Love Detective), Derek Farrell (Danny Bird Mysteries) and myself talk about crime reading, crime writing and the messy reality of poison.

We talked about our favourite books – and the ones we wished we’d written – and which writers we’d like to chat with over dinner. Mentions here for Oscar Wilde, Daphne du Maurier, Herodotus and of course, Agatha Christie.

John Pye, who has owned this bookshop for 40 years, insisted I stand on the step for the photograph – he wanted to bring a box, but I absolutely refused! – and I’m still the shortest!

We went out for supper afterwards and i didn’t get home until nearly midnight. It was a VERY good night!

Here are the first in each series of books.

The Danny Bird Mysteries

Murder Among the Roses

Joan Hessayon Award 2023

Joan Hessayon Award

I’m absolutely thrilled to announce that Dark Sanctuary by Sarah Callejo is an contender for the prize this year, which will be awarded at the Gala Dinner at Romantic Novelists’ Association‘s conference in August.

Dark Sanctuary

Best-selling author, Katie Fforde, said of Dark Sanctuary, that it is “An intriguing tale from an exciting new talent.”

And a 5* review on Amazon sums it all up perfectly with “Its rugged Spanish setting adds mystery to the story, and the author’s descriptive writing puts you right there in the big old creepy house! Sophia is very relatable and I cared what would happen to her. Does she get her happy ending? You’ll have to read it to find out. Great characters, great setting, great story.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself!

The Award

Sponsored by Dr. David Hessayon OBE (well known for his gardening books) in honour of his late wife, Joan, who was a longstanding RNA member and supporter of its New Writers’ Scheme, the Joan Hessayon Award  showcases the variety of debut novels within the romantic fiction genre that have gone through the scheme and achieved publication the previous year.

The Contenders

The eight contenders for 2023 are as follows:

Dark Sanctuary, Sarah Callejo, SpellBound Books

Love You From A-Z, Linda Corbett, One More Chapter

Always By Your Side, Julie Haworth, Simon & Schuster UK

Last First Kiss, Stella Holt, Tule Publishing

Their Wildest Safari Dream, Suzanne Merchant, Mills & Boon True Love

The Rose of Florence, Angela M Sims, Romaunce Books

Let’s Just Be Friends, Katy Turner, Joffe Books

This Child of Mine, Emma-Claire Wilson, Avon

Facebook giveaway

Facebook  Giveaway

Just a very quick blog this weekend to let you know I have two paperbacks to give away.

One is a signed copy of Katy Watson’s fabulous homage to golden age crime, The Three Dahlias, which was Waterstone’s Thriller of the Month in May. (I bought it when I joined her at her book signing in Waterstones Bromley).

The other is a signed copy of the first book in my Maybridge Mystery series, Murder Among the Roses. To be in the draw leave a message in the comments on Liz Fielding’s Facebook page (not here!)

I’m afraid it’s the UK only because of the cost of postage. I’ll draw the winner on Monday 19th June.

Glitz previews the royal wedding...

Obviously, any royal wedding will attract the gossip magazines. There will be cover pictures, stories about the dress designer, speculation on the honeymoon destination. Our royal wedding is no different..

The editor of Celebrity, having sacked my heroine and having totally blotted his copybook with an outrageous article, is out in the cold, but Glitz was given a preview of Ally's diary of the

Linked characters...

I've been asked about secondary characters in my Rita nominated book, The Sheikh's Convenient Princess.

Does Violet have her own story? Do the Garland Girls appear in other books?

Happily, the answer is yes and yes!

I created the Garland Agency for the book Dating Her Boss. When Jilly Prescott arrives from London clutching her certificates for incredible typing and shorthand speeds, Amanda
