Unremembered Monday: Jennifer Bosworth

Unremembered Monday - Badge

Welcome back for the next installment of UNREMEMBERED MONDAY!

What is Unremembered Monday?

In my new book, UNREMEMBERED (the first in a new sci-fi trilogy), the main character, Seraphina, wakes up among the wreckage of a devastating plane crash of which she is the only survivor. She has no memories of who she is or her life before the crash but she soon discovers that her memory loss is not simply amnesia. Someone has been erasing memories from her mind.

In honor of the book (OUT NOW!), every Monday, I’m featuring an awesome guest author (and book giveaway) and asking them to answer the following question:

Which memory would you most like to be Unremembered?

struckThis week I have my very good friend, Jennifer Bosworth, author of STRUCK, on the blog. STRUCK is a fantastic, high-octane story of lightening addicts and doomsday cults! But today, Jenn gets philosophical with us, talking about Infinite Moments and Memories. Check out her guest post below!”

jennifer bosworthAfter reading each of the previous author posts that went up on Unremembered Monday, I’ve come to the conclusion that we’re all in agreement about one thing: despite the pain that bad memories can bring, few of us would choose to delete them from our brains, because the bad stuff, the hard stuff, the embarrassing, torturous, damaging stuff makes us who we are just as much as the good stuff does.

I think Frank McCourt said it best in Angele’s Ashes, “The happy childhood is hardly worth your while.”

Which is not to say that none of us authors had a happy childhood, or that you have to survive a traumatic youth in order to build a solid cache of inspiration for writing. But if none of us had ever endured anything hard, grueling, painful . . . if we hadn’t suffered at least a little bit, there would be no balance to our lives, no contrast between the difficult times and the happy ones.

So, no, there’s nothing I would “unremember,” even if I had the option to do so. I want to keep my bad memories on the same shelf as my good ones.

Jessica, you’ll have to forgive me for deviating from the assignment, but you know me. I’m a wildcard!

I can’t tell you which memories I would “unremember,” but I can tell you about the ones I need to remember, the memories that keep me going, that remind me what the whole point of my life is.

The infinite moments.

I had a conversation with Jay Asher recently (yeah, I’m dropping his name, and I can do that cause he blurbed my book) about “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” and how the protagonist, Charlie, recounts “infinite moments.” If you’ve read the book or seen the movie, you probably know what I’m talking about. If not, let me surmise to the best of my ability. Infinite moments are a bit hard to define, but I know I’ve had them. I know I have fewer of them as I get older. I know you can’t look too hard at those moments when you’re in the midst of them or they vanish.

Most of all, I know those moments are the ones that my mind holds onto as a feeling more than a memory. But not just any feeling . . . the feeling of being alive. Of being intensely present, acutely aware. They are the moments when you become certain that you exist, and that you might just exist forever.

I remember one such moment when I saw my husband for the first time. I know some people scoff at the idea of love at first sight, and I’m not even saying this was an instant of love at first sight. But it was . . . something. A connection. A grounding. A surge of intuition. Time slowed to a crawl when I first laid eyes on him. My whole body felt light. My heart expanded. I felt, suddenly, an overwhelming sense of meaning.

An infinite moment. One that no one can ever take from me, because it’s not a memory. It’s an imprint on the thing we call a soul.

Another time, biking through Los Angeles, I was going fast when my wheel caught in a rut. Then I was flying headfirst through the air toward the cement. Once again, time turned to molasses and I felt, in an extended split-second, every living cell in my body, and I had time to think how alive I was before my body crashed into concrete. I survived with a dent in my helmet but without the skin on most of one leg, and I took with me the explosive sense of self and physicality I’d had when I thought I was about to break my neck.

An infinite moment. One I return to again and again to be reminded that I. Am. ALIVE.

There are so many more. Too many to name. The first moments of freedom after the bell to end a school year rings, announcing the beginning of summer. Riding in the bow of my parents’ speedboat in Lake Powell, my hair flying backward, sun warm on my eyelids, my arm around a dog with its wet nose jousting into the air. Riding on the back of a friend’s dirt bike in the winter, icy air numbing my face. Driving alone through the desert late on a moonless night, Portishead blasting through the speakers, my jeep’s high beams the only light for miles. Listening to the Indigo Girls for the first time and grocking lyrics like “how long ‘till my soul gets it right?” and “Every five years or so I look back on my life and have a good laugh.” Tipsy declarations of love for friends, for my husband, for music, for books, for life. The morning after I’ve gone to sleep crying, but awakened to the knowledge that everything will be okay.

These are memories that are not memories, but moments that planted themselves too deep inside me to ever be uprooted.

The infinite moments cannot be unremembered.

I love this post! It totally gave me the chills. I definitely have had some “Infinite Moments” in my life.

Now, it’s time to give away some books! This week we’re giving away a copy of STRUCK by Jennifer Bosworth. Please use the widget below to enter!

ABOUT STRUCK:

Mia Price is a lightning addict. She’s survived countless strikes, but her craving to connect to the energy in storms endangers her life and the lives of those around her.

Los Angeles, where lightning rarely strikes, is one of the few places Mia feels safe from her addiction. But when an earthquake devastates the city, her haven is transformed into a minefield of chaos and danger. The beaches become massive tent cities. Downtown is a crumbling wasteland, where a traveling party moves to a different empty building each night, the revelers drawn to the destruction by a force they cannot deny. Two warring cults rise to power, and both see Mia as the key to their opposing doomsday prophecies. They believe she has a connection to the freak electrical storm that caused the quake, and to the far more devastating storm that is yet to come.

Mia wants to trust the enigmatic and alluring Jeremy when he promises to protect her, but she fears he isn’t who he claims to be. In the end, the passion and power that brought them together could be their downfall. When the final disaster strikes, Mia must risk unleashing the full horror of her strength to save the people she loves, or lose everything.

Book 1, CINDER, is a sci-fi, futuristic retelling of the classic Cinderella and book 2, SCARLET, continues the compelling saga with a sci-fi retelling of Little Red Riding Hood! But today, Marissa takes time off from her busy fairy-tale life in order to answer the question, “Which memory would you most like to be “Unremembered?”

So here she is…Marissa Meyer!

marissa meyer

When Jessica asked me to write a blog post about a memory I would like unremembered, I began making a list. That was a few months ago. The list ended up being really, really long.

And yet, there was nothing on the list that, after a moment or two of painful remembering, I deemed worthy of being unremembered. Because each of those mortifying, horrifying, gut-wrenching moments has shaped me into the person I am today. A person I ended up being pretty darn proud of.

So no, I would not erase the time I was so deep into a daydream that I was literally talking to my imaginary friends, out loud, during my second-grade story time, only to realize that the entire class was staring at me when I finally snapped out of it. After all, if I hadn’t nurtured my imagination then, I may not be a writer today.

I would not erase the anger and mortification I felt when the teacher in charge of casting the school play told me not to bother auditioning for any of the lead roles because I didn’t “fit the body type”—this, of course, said in front of many of my peers. I was devastated, both because I loved acting, but also because I’ve struggled with being overweight since I was little and it was extra painful to be criticized for it by, of all people, a teacher I admired. However, that crushing blow was also what made me determined to take my health more seriously and eventually led to me getting my weight issues under control.

I would not erase the time I told my crush that a certain sappy song made me think of him, even though he didn’t reciprocate and it has entirely ruined an otherwise perfectly good song for me. Because it taught me not to do that.

I would not erase the time a very-virginal me wrote a very X-rated story to share with my very curious friends, only to have classmates I’d never spoken to approaching me by the end of the school day telling me how much they enjoyed reading it. Embarrassing at the time, yes, but my friends and I laugh about it now, and it taught me to be more careful who I share my writing with. (I never did get that story back… I’m just waiting for it to resurface!)

I would not erase that one make-out session with that one guy I didn’t even like, who felt like kissing an iguana… an iguana with very eager hands… *shudders* Because much as the memory still makes me cringe, it was just one step toward finding and appreciating the right guy for me.

There were plenty more, but they all came down to one thing. Mistakes made. Lessons learned. Personal growth achieved.

So I guess that’s it. After all my reminiscing, I’m afraid there isn’t a single memory that I would ever want—

Wait. WAIT.

I take it back. There is one memory…

“Two girls, one cup.”

*shudders*

(If you don’t know what that is, for all that is good in this world, don’t Google it.)

Please, please, someone take that memory away from me. Carve, dig, burn, or scrape it out if you have to. Seriously. Any time now. I’ll be waiting.

This was FANTASTIC! Thanks so much Marissa for your great take on the question! I’ll get the memory coders working on that last one asap!

Teaser Tuesday: Unremembered – Final Teaser!

Teaser Tuesday - Badge

Well this is it! UNREMEMBERED release day! I can’t believe it’s finally here!

For the past six weeks I’ve been posting short teasers from the book every Tuesday to get you excited about the release! Today I’m posting the final one. I hope you enjoy it!

From UNREMEMBERED, page 278

I close my eyes and surrender to the pull of the abyss. Once I stop struggling, I fall much faster. It’s a liberating feeling. My hands, instead of grappling to hang on to something, slide smoothly and effortlessly through the amber dust.

It’s so easy to simply let gravity take control of my fate, it almost doesn’t seem real.

And who knows, maybe it isn’t.

Thanks for tuning in each week to Teaser Tuesday! If you missed any of the previous teasers, you can find them all here.

UNREMEMBERED – Big News Roundup!

Unremembered 3D - smallThree years.

Three years I’ve been working on this book, waiting for it to release to the world and it releases…tomorrow! (March 5)

To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure I ever really believed the day would actually come. I think I always assumed the apocalypse would happen at the end of 2012 and no one would ever get to read the book. But when December 21 came and went without ceremony, I realized it was time to start believing. And yet it still feels so surreal.

Some really exciting stuff has been happening lately! I thought I’d do a little round-up post and fill you all in!

Amazon has selected UNREMEMBERED as one of its “Big Spring Books!”

I practically fainted when my publisher contacted me with the news. Apparently every season, the editors over at Amazon hand select a few books that they think are the “big books” of that season and Unremembered was chosen! It’s so exciting! Click here to see it in all its glory!

Amazon also selected UNREMEMBERED as a “Best Book of March!”

Okay, as you can imagine, totally crushing on Amazon right now. Not only was the above news faint-worthy, this was even more exciting! Click here to see all the Best Books of March!

Unremembered is out in the UK!

HOORAH! My friends across the pond can now walk into any bookstore and buy UNREMEMBERED! (I’ve also received reports that it’s been spotted in ASDA which is so freaking exciting!) Click here to learn more about the UK version and get access to some great bonus content!

Unremembered Monday: Meg Cabot

Unremembered Monday - Badge

Welcome back for the next installment of UNREMEMBERED MONDAY!

What is Unremembered Monday?

In my new book, UNREMEMBERED (the first in a new sci-fi trilogy), the main character, Seraphina, wakes up among the wreckage of a devastating plane crash of which she is the only survivor. She has no memories of who she is or her life before the crash but she soon discovers that her memory loss is not simply amnesia. Someone has been erasing memories from her mind.

In honor of the book (which releases March 5!), every Monday, I’m featuring an awesome guest author (and book giveaway) and asking them to answer the following question:

Which memory would you most like to be Unremembered?

size 12 and ready to rockI’m SUPER excited about this week’s guest author! She is one of my idols, one of the most prolific authors I know, and just an all around awesome gal! International bestselling author, Meg Cabot (The Princess Diaries, The Abandon Series, the Heather Wells Mysteries) joins us this week on Unremembered Monday to tell us about her most embarrassing moment that she may or may not want to Unremember. And to celebrate Meg’s appearance on my blog, we’re giving away a free copy of SIZE 12 AND READY TO ROCK, the latest installment of her bestselling Heather Wells Mystery series.

Now without further ado, I give you…Meg!

meg-cabotWhen Jessica mentioned she was looking for posts about memories wished “unremembered,” my first thought was, “I’m in,” because I adore Jessica and her books, and loved the idea.

My second thought was, “Oh, no. How am I going to pick just one embarrassing memory I’d like to unremember? I have so many.”

While I was trying to pick one I’d like to delete forever from my mind – for instance, the time at a party when I was quite a bit younger than I am now, and all the seats were taken, so I sat on top of a trashcan thinking the lid would hold my weight, but instead the lid collapsed inwards, so I fell into the trash butt-first, and could not get out of the trashcan due to the suction holding me inside, only none of my fellow party goers would help me out of the trashcan because they were all collapsed on the floor in tears of laughter – it occurred to me that this memory fell under the category of what a former boss of mine would call a “teachable moment.”

Before I became able to support myself on the money I earned through my writing alone (and that took many, many years), I worked as the assistant director of a 700 bed undergraduate residence hall at New York University.

Like the heroine of my mystery series about Heather Wells, the assistant director of a similar 700 undergraduate residence hall, I had many bosses while I was at NYU (mine kept getting promoted. Heather’s leave for various other reasons, often criminal).

Whenever something regrettable occurred – to one of the residents, a staff member, her, or me –  my favorite boss always called it a “teachable moment.”  Not a mistake or a f*** up, but a “teachable moment,” something from which we could learn, and then hopefully move forward.

That did not, of course, mean there weren’t consequences, some of which were tragic in nature. We all have memories that are deeply sad or even frightening that we sometimes wish we could unremember.

But looking back, I wouldn’t choose to erase those memories either, since they’ve helped shaped who I am today.

So now when I think about that time I was stuck butt-first inside that trash can – until my best friend finally stopped laughing and pulled me out – I tell myself, “Teachable moment.”

I’ve never sat on top of a trashcan again, and I always warn others not to, either.

LOVE this post! And what a horrific story! Anything involving a trash can just tops the embarrassment list in my book.

Now, it’s time to give away a book! Meg’s giving away a free copy of the latest installment of her Heather Wells mystery series, set in Fischer Residence Hall, Size 12 and Ready to Rock.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

ABOUT SIZE 12 AND READY TO ROCK:

Heather Wells used to be a teen pop sensation…until her label dropped her for gaining a few extra pounds, and she walked in on her boy-band boyfriend Jordan Cartwright banging her pint-sized popstar replacement, Tania Trace. In the aftermath of this debacle, the last thing Heather expected were the plus-sized sparks that flared with Jordan’s big brother, Cooper.

But now that Heather and Cooper are ready to tie the knot, she’s determined to keep her new job at New York College’s aptly-nicknamed “Death Dorm” from throwing a wrench (and the many other deadly little surprises it’s thrown in the past) into her happily-ever-after plans. (Maybe not the “ever after” – Heather and Cooper have learned to take the words “until death do us part” very seriously!)

Now, in SIZE 12 AND READY TO ROCK, it’s summer break and the campus is quiet. But that doesn’t mean Heather can relax…because that ambulance she just saw pulling up in front of Death Dorm is there for none other than Tania Trace, now married to – and pregnant by – Heather’s ex…who just happens to be covered in his wife’s bodyguard’s blood.

Just another day at Death Dorm – or has America’s hottest couple got a deadly secret? Soon Heather’s dodging photo-hungry paparazzi and squealing fourteen and fifteen year-old pop star protégés after the first-ever Tania Trace Rock Camp – with its own reality film crew – checks into the dorm. But when one of the producers of Tania’s reality show checks out – on a gurney – it’s clear murder wasn’t taking the summer off.

Can Heather get estranged brothers Cooper and Jordan to bury the hatchet – before someone buries it into Cartwright Record’s biggest star? If the “reality” is that saving Tania’s life is what it takes to get her ex out of her life – and Cooper firmly into it, once and for all – Heather Wells is ready to rock, roll, and right some grievous wrongs!

Every Tuesday until release day (March 5), I’m picking a random short excerpt from UNREMEMBERED and posting it here on the blog. The reason it’s a “teaser” is because I’ll be giving you NO context of the story surrounding the excerpt. Only a page number.

Here’s number 5 (the second to last one!)

From UNREMEMBERED, page 192

I can still hear their screams.

Even down here.

My hair swirls around my head, blocking my view. I push it back and search harder. They have to be here somewhere!

But they are nowhere. Vanished. Swallowed by the ocean.

I see light above me. It’s an unusual color. Not yellow like the sun. But fluorescent white.

I swim toward it, feeling my lungs slowly contracting.

I need to breathe.

My arm reaches up to break the surface. I anticipate the feeling of the warm beach air. But it never comes.
